Guys

progress on the Spit has been slow over the last few weeks however I have installed the pull/pull for the tail wheel and rudder and further work on the back end control surfaces..........in between getting my TF Jug and Byron P51 airworthy again........(wiping off a thick layer of dust and charging batteries and running up engines)

More progress pics to follow shortly

Al.
Man these Spitfires take a long time to build,,,, but arn't they worth it!!!!!!!!

Brad

Hi Guys
Finally some more progress pics of my Spit

Aftter some deliberation I decided on a carbon pushrod to the elevator and pull/pull for the rudder and tail wheel.......this worked well on a Spit of the same type I saw last year so rather than "reinvent the wheel" I thought I'd stick with this method. I built in a servo tray in the fuse behind the cockpit and using a couple of Hitec 645mg servos instlled the pushrod and pull/pull wires. The tail surfaces were cover in Sig coverall and ready to paint........I just need to add the external elevator trim tab pushrods and mark in the trim tab details with some panel line tape.

I have also enlarged a hole in the firewall behind the cylinder head to accomodate theducted fan motor (65 mm dia with a 30a ESC) I will use for cooling, drawing airpast the head whichwill be partially enclosed in a shroud to pull air thru the cooling fins.........well that's the plan anyway..........I will aslo make up a aluminium fan to sit behind the spinner back plate this should provide airflow to the mostly enclosedengine.

Having spent the last few weeks on the fuse I thought I would return to the wing ...........we had a long weekend her in Melbourne and the WX was rubbish so I spent alot of time in the shed with afew bottles of grape juice on hand decided is was time to add some surface detail...........so panel lines and rivets and access panels.....here we come

Firstly I marked out the major panel lines in pencil using a placky 1/24 scale Airfix model and somebooks and photos for reference, then I added the panel line tape and sprayed a couple of coats of hi-fill primer over all the lines...some wet n dry work and then I added the raised panels using 20 thou plastic card. The cordite vents were made from 20mm plastic conduit and soem raised access panels were added to give the surface some texture. The end result looks pretty good.............just need to add the round access panels along the leading edge, I'll use stickydots you get from an office supplier.
After many, (sip) many (sip) many (open fresh bottle of red) ..........many hoursof work with a soldering iron, the rivets were done. I added some Dzus fasteners to the gun access panels and the end result was pretty good. (me thinks anyway for someone with little skill and even less patience)
The next step was to install the underwing radiators and thesupercharger intake, these were gluedon with silicon and then the blened inwith car bog and sanded andprimed, panel lines and rivets added later.
The next step is to finished the flap hinging and install the servos and test the control throws, the removable covers are still to be made for the oleo leg wells and u/c mechanism which will make the U/C more scale like and then make the u/c covers which fix to the legs.
Slowly slowly catchy monkey.

I found one more shot I took of the beast on it's wheels, the underwing radiators look about right...........not sure how they would survive a belly landing ...........so best make sure the gear is reliable !!

Stay tuned for the next instalment

Nice work Alan, still watching you are onto the good fun bit.
Over the weekend i have been test flying a Mick Reeves Hurricane, i have had 5 of his aircraft over the years rock solid flyers no problems, mine is 8.1 kg 80 inch span with an OS 160 and 18X6 W prop.and custom retracts.
I had a bit of a problem with the new 160, two head bolts dropped out and the rest came loose,I have never had anything like that happen with OS before. Dead stick landing but no problems for once the engine stopped in the correct place to make a good landing.

looking good there alan, I share your pain but not the red with the rivets, uggh I am sick of doing them.

"......from what I hear the Model Design Spit flies like a big trainer...hopefully that is the case ??? "

If the tail incidence is at about +1-1/2 degrees, otherwise it porpoises like a mad thing. [:-][X(]

I'm hearing you loud and clear on both fronts...........I am well and truly riveted out after doing both top and bottom of the wings.........the fuse rivets are dome tops so that will be just as painful using a syringe and white glue............as far as the tail incidence goes.........yes I set it precisely at +1.5 deg.............the main plane has around +2.0 deg incidence so it should fly with a touch of down trim as per the real aircraft.

cheers

Pete

i just ordered the paint from Barry in W.A , he has all the colour RAF required apart from RAF insig blue however he has the USAAF blue which he says is almost identicle........... so that may have to do.
The only think left on the wing prior to painting is the tip nav lights (I'm just installing some plastic lenses) and finish the fixing of the control surfaces.

Who is the best mob for stencils and nonmenclature ?? promark gave me a Price of $280usd for the nonmenclature and paint masks........Aeroloft priced $225 for their dry transfers???

Any thoughts?

Hey al,

For paint masks, you can't or at least couldn't beat Getstencils.com. I haven't worked with the new owners yet so i'm not sure what they are like, but from all reports, they should be fine. All try trasfers are expensive regardless of who you get them through.

I got my nonmenclature done at ProMark. they were really good and prompt.and the stencilsby getstencil. Maybe a mix and match might be the best option,. not in terms of shipping, but overall costs.

Thanks

dave

you could try Pete Love from the SCAF group here, not sure if he does nonmenclature though?

getstencils is going again under new owners so try them as well.

Hey Pete,

I tried Peter Love from the SCAF for my F-16's markings and nonmenclature, but he only does vinyl stickers at this stage...

Getstencils has been running for a few months with the new owners and i haven't heard anything bad, so i take it as no news is good news!

thanks

Alan,
I think I have a set of that in soft copy that you may be able to get blown up. Will have a look through my folders tonight.

Have you tried in the UK? Mick Reeves, Fighter Aces, Rawle?

What about Clarke Industries in Canada?

cheers

G'Day All,

Just to let you know I am able to do stencils as well as vinyl and some nose art. If you have seen Steve Thomas's B17 these were all done via masks (Stencils), article on the B17 is in the latest airborne mag. I am currently in the process of developingdry transfer but not quite up and running yet. Have a look at attached for examples,

cheers

Peter has confirmed that he can supply the stencils for the Spit markings.........his price is comparable with that of the Flight line graphics in the UK  ..........I rather support the local guys so I'll get Peter to supply the paints masks.

I will however have to get Flight line to supply the nomenclature .

The Spit progress to date is that the panel lines and rivets are complete on the wing and I have fitted the servos to test the control throws, I have added the nav light lenses to the wing tips (Jaycar had some small red and green placky lenses which when cut in half , look pretty good) .
With a little more work on the oleo leg covers the wing will be ready to paint .

Stay tuned for more pics

Cool mate,,,, colour. Have you got your paint from Baz yet? Make sure you give it a real good stir/shake. It seems it settle in the tin as the pigment is heavy. I personally didnt like the 'cockpit green' from the range so repainted with Humbrol cockpit green.

Hey Brad

Barryis shipping the paint this week..........I have only gone forthe external colours for the Warbird Paint..........I'll use Tamiya or Humbrol paints for the cockpit.

Back onto the Fuselage now........applying panel lines and rivets.........yawn......then need to work on the cockpit interior and then fit the ducted fan motor (for engine cooling)

cheers
