Woof,
Thanks again for the info. When do you expect to make your maiden flight? I'm interested to hear how well it flys with the Saito 82s. Mine will have Saito 100s in it. Good luck on your maiden.

Dan, This may be of interest to you , since you are puting in Saito 100,s, which are the same size as the 82,s, attached are some pics of the exhuast set up i used which remains totally enclosed in the cowls.

Really nice scale set-up!
Just make sure the low end is tuned perfectly for the exhaust back pressure. The on board glow will help, but is also another system with potential for failure.
Even running 2-strokes sideways, the Pitts-style Bisson mufflers on my green one required some very specific fine tuning different than for stock equipment.

Woof,
Thanks for the pictures. I REALLY like the exhaust set-up. Did you build it or did you buy it?
I have a question...How did you cut your cowls for cooling air out? If I recall correctly, its a 2 or 3 to 1 outlet to inlet ratio.

Hey Woof,
Any progress on your p38? I was curious as to whether you had to add weight to balance the plane & if so, how much & where did you put it? (nose or tail).

RE: VQ P38 Completed
Nice job on your VQ. If you want an easy flying one to train on, look at the NitroPlanes 90" version. Not as pretty as the VQ, but can't mistake that shape in the air.
It flies like a trainer, if you could call a P-38 one. Also less prone to the death spiral if you lose a windmill.
1/3 the cost of the VQ, so it ain't going to hurt as bad if you park one like Kram.

"Park?" "Park?"
I take great offense at that!
"Park" sounds like some logic or precision was employed.
When my first VQ ran out of gas on one engine, it went in like a howitzer shell and exploded on impact.
No sirree, no "parking" about it!
(Just trying to show, with tongue in cheek, that if you have no aptitude for humor or self-ridicule, you'd best not fly 38's)
Keep the faith, brothers!

Dan,
Didint have to add any weight other than mounting the battery packs forward in the nose section....balanced very well actually..
So far i have had a few "short" hops off the runway and then put it straight back down...just trying to get a feel of it.
The 2 82,s certainly provide enough thrust, as its lifts far easier than i had thought it would...
I will heed advice given here and resist the temptation to " up up and away" and try another form of twin before the P38 ......

Woof,
Thanks for the response on balancing. I am currently looking for a different twin for "training" before I will fly my P38. I will still finish the P38 & will hang it in my shop...waiting for the day when I'm ready to fly it.

RE: VQ P38 Completed
Hey Woof, another aussie here. I just got mine this week from Col Taylor. So far I've found the quality a little average, particularly the glass work. Guess I'll just use the heat gun treatment. Also the wings could join up a little better, I suppose a bit of fiddling will fix it. Did you have much trouble with the flaps? Bloody had a bind in one, and unbeleivable amounts of play, unacceptable. Got most of the play out just by tightening things up, did you have the same issues? So a little dissappointed with the quality, but I'll overcome this. Hopefully will take To Shepparton Mammoth scale day, thats why I got it. Bit of a drive tho from Alice. And I'll have a new born on ground to...
2 OS 55s in mine, good strong reliable engines. Previous service in a Sea gull Dual Ace. Very good plane and ideal twin trainer. Almost flys like a pattern ship, I could easily do the basic IMAC sequence with it. Slippery tho and hard to slow down.
Good to practice with, ie start, tune sequence ect. What I do is start the starboard engine, tune it, put nose in air, check, put on floor, idle for a min, fire wall the throttle, and if all is good shut down. Then repeat with port engine. Shut down refuel, go fly. Stick to a stringent procedure and checks and all will be fine.

RE: VQ P38 Completed
rastus21.. yeah , the glass boom covers are very ordinary...my biggest gripe with the kit.
A for the wing joins.... i was not happy with the setup of the removable outer wing sections...i ended up permantly joining the wings....much more secure and i was able to make a very neat join of the outer wing panels.
Also...check some of the joins in the nose section.....some are only held in place by a type of silicone......not to my liking..i removed this and glassed the bulkheads and joins.
Mine has been airborne once......... i dont think i have ever trembled so much ..... i am really glad i put Robart gear in it as i was so nervous that my landing was a little "hard" ....but no damage to gear or plane..
Watch the covering on the joins at the booms.......... it does not like hot sunshine .

RE: VQ P38 Completed
Cheers, Woof. Can you tell me how you did your gear doors? I reckon they will be quite a challenge. I finally got the flaps all working symetric. Lot of fiddling, had to remove one completely and grind the channells out to stop a bind, wouldnt shut all the way. I'm starting to think, yaget what ya pay for.
How was the flying quality's ?good I hope.

RE: VQ P38 Completed
Hi Matt
I had the same issue with it grinding on the flaps the problem was the hatch covers on the wing as for the fiberglass parts If i could make them better myself i would but my fiberglassing skills are a little lacking. mine has OS91 F/s pumps in it with 3 blades 13-8 props have not had to add any weight wingsare one piece as i didnt want to keep taking the modle apart for transporting will send some pictures later.
Regards
Anthony

OUCH!
Sorry about that!
When did that happen?
Were both engines running?
How did you track it to the pushrods?
Although I am quite fond of the VQ kit, I was not fond of the hardware. Even the clevises were often brittle. I replaced them all with those little black snap-lock Dubro dealies and changed the pushrods to match, altho I don't believe the rods that come with kit are undersized for the in-flight loads expected.
OUCH!
