Default 1/5 P51 D Mustang Flaps

Hello all,

I'm just in the middle of building my 1/5 pica P51-D Mustang. I am about to connect the flaps to the wing. Just wanting to check what throw should I be getting out of the flaps? At the moment I am getting 42 degrees - Do I need any more?

42 to 45 degrees should be good for flaps. Any thing over 45 degrees will be more like a large speed brakes then flaps.

I've never flown one, but I've read that full flaps is 50 degrees.

Just in the process of testing mine now ,I am finding half flaps are more than adequate ,
Full flaps at over 40 deg are causing me some problems

Too much flap on the Top Flight Mustangs causes bad stuff to happen.  It tends to blank the elevator or something like that.  When using large amounts of flap throw, the elevator seems as if it just kind of quits working effectively.

On the PICA mustang I would suggest 35 degrees for full flaps. Remember that you are really going to have to use power wisely when you drop them this far. I hope that helps.

I have a 82" P51 and use 45 degrees at full flap, lands beautifully with that amount of flap. Mind you I dont try and 3 point it. I wheel it on with a little speed still on her.

Each model is slightly different so I would suggest you start with moderate amounts of flap and progresively increase till you get what works for you and your model. Test at least 3 mistakes high initially.

cheers

Quote-I wheel it on with a little speed still on her.

Yes i would totally agree with that comment.
I have now resolved the issues i had and now use half flap with full flap of 45 deg being deployed halfway through finals ,she touches down very nicely .

Very controlable at all stages with a little up elevator trim dialed in when the flaps are deployed .

C/G needs to be around the ball park figure of 25 to 30 mm in front of the main spar for your test flights .

One other thing ,when building the model ensure that the wheel axles are sitting just in front of the wing leading edge at least and you will not have a problem

The Pica 89 " P51 is a very docil model with stalls etc quite predictable .
i am using a DA 50 with a 22* 10 prop , she uses all the power of that motor .

Cheers
Graeme

try a 21x12

I use one on a 42lb Seafury hauled by a G62.

Mustangs are very forgiving, when I first flew mine the CG was way out, 2" rearwards in fact and yes it was porposing around a bit but was very controllable until I did a loop and it snapped off the top and went into a spin, tried pulling out, back intothe spin, 3 times it happend in all and I fainlly pulled out very gently at about 30 ft and limped it to a wobbly landing with no damage.

On inspection the previous owner had 1-1/2 lbs of lead in the bloody tail. [X(]

By the way mine weighs 22lbs and is powered by a Supertigre ST-2500 methanol burner and has plenty of grunt.
cheers

Thanks for that ,my problem was a nose heavy model with sysmtoms that gave me the impression that it was tail heavy ,all resolved now .
Yes the Pica is very stable ,Hanger 9 P51 80" has bad stall characteristics ,but full flap level landings are good ,you can see it grinding to a halt in the air just before touch down..

On another note ,that large weather system which covers the whole Tasman is not good for either of us,miserable here ,looks like you are in for a bit more also over the next few days
Cheers

tell me about it, we had 450mm of rain within 24hrs and it has started raining here again. Only good news is that the dams have gone from 59% to 73% and still rising.

Good mate of mine Ron Cav has a 1/4 scale Mustang from the old KMI range and that lands at walking pace, beautiful to watch him land it.

cheers

I also have Pica P51 and would like to know if i can fly it on G38 or should i look for bigger engine for it.
The reason i ask this is coz i have a friend who dosen't want much for his G38 so i'm thinking on buying it for this model. What are general thoughts about this combination and what size and pitch of prop would i need if this is workable combination.....

Thanks
Sam

Wouldn't work right you need something like a DA 50 or Zenoah 62 up front but shouldn't you rebuild it first and see how heavy it will be and then look at what type of motor you what to power it with.John
