P 51 D Mustang Panel lines and rivets

    Hello All

I am in the middle of building a 1/5 P51-D Mustang and would like some help regarding the panel lines / rivets. Does anyone have any photos / blue prints or suggestions as to where I can find some information on this, as I would like to do it to scale. Any help will be appreciated!

RE: P 51 D Mustang Panel lines and rivets

One of the best drawings I've seen for panel lines and rivets for the P-51D are in an out of print book titled The Great Book of World War II Airplanes. If you search on Amazon, you can find used copies.

RE: P 51 D Mustang Panel lines and rivets

    TSquadron,

One of the best books i have and have come across on the Mustang is from AJ Press, is from their modelmania series and these books are designed and written for modellers. it has about 80 pages full of high quality detail pictures on just the mustang, the 10 pages of three views are excellent quality.

Once you see what the likes of AJ Press and Kagero have in terms of detailed books on aircraft, you'll be throwing away you squadron signal books. This will solve heaps of your questions regarding the Mustang.

    anyway, the ISBN is: 83-7237-163-6

    Thanks

RE: P 51 D Mustang Panel lines and rivets

I missed that one. I made the mistake of only looking at the Monograph series, whereas it's in the Modelmania series. I too will agree that these are some of the best books around. The Book I suggested has a great drawing of the P-51D, but this book from AJ press/Kagero should be considered indispensible to anyone wanting to do a good scale model.

RE: P 51 D Mustang Panel lines and rivets

77chickenhawk, I use vinyl rivets as well and have found that they also make a superb base for button head rivets. Lay down the vinyl and then put a drop of glue on top. The vinyl pevents the glue from spreading out too far and keeps all the rivets the exact same diameter. I bit more work but worth it if you need raised rivets and want them to be consistent.

    Regards,
    Chad Veich

great idea. where did you get the rivets?
    you made them? or what?

so if you could buy a kit with pannel lin tape and rivets, enough to do a 1/5 ish scale plane, would you buy it? curious.

I make my own but if I didn't have access to the proper equipment I would absolutely consider purchasing them.

A good wood glue, a syringe, a small tip and some time - less then $5 and you have nice rivets...

Pete the rivets look good but they be wrong. The Stang and lots of other planes use flush rivets and not raised rivets.

Dito that most fighters had flush rivits. The Corsair was ,for the most part ,spot-welded.
