I put the wings on and the pump motor was constantly running when the wings were moving and then the motor would 'twitch' constantly at the 'end points' of the wing folds.
I'm attributing this, I believe, to the battery being almost discharged.
Initially, I thought that maybe some air pockets were along the non-clear tubing or in the cylinders, but, after charging the battery, the wings are functioning properly.
First, I release the air pressure to the accumulator and then, using a hand pump, put air pressure into the system until the wings would go UP. I ran the test and added air pressure just on the UP test as little work was needed by the system to lower the wings.
Using the hand pump, about 4-5 'pumps' were needed to attain a functioning system.
From my limited experience, the pump needs to cycle on/off about every one second.
A constant running of the motor will damage the system, in my opinion, as I noticed that the voltage regulator on top of the motor got very hot when the motor runs continuously (I immediately turned off the power when the regulator got hot: also, if the motor continuously runs).
On the safe side, I went to radio shack and bought a heat sink and some heat transfer grease and screwed it to the voltage regulator to dissipate any heat. The voltage regulator has a hole in exposed metal which, I believe, is for adding a heat sink.
I remember the corsair at warbird over Delaware smoking which was probably this regulator getting so hot that it started to smoke.
These are my observations and conclusions so they are only based on my limited experience with this system.

pictures will be loaded when the web site fixed their constant 'system errors'.

They made some changes Sam. Here is what the new one looks like next to the 08 version that came with our ARF. The old version did not work. Motor even locked up on it. We used the new one out of the kit to get the ARF working, and the kit version will be converted to electric. No more hydrohlic crap.

Gary,
Let me know how the conversion works so I can convert mine.
It seems like the geared conversion will be perfect for this application plus eliminate the oily mess.

The picture on the right is the same as mine.
It is very sensitive to the amount of air pressure entered.
This evening, I removed all the air pressure and found that 5 full pumps on the hand pump gave me enough to raise the wings, IF I simulated engine vibration that allowed the wings to raise.
Adding more pressure got the wings to work better but the accumulator turned the pump on more often and for longer periods of time. This raised my concern that the pump would overheat.

Roger that. I hope to get the folding mechanism down to Mitch before we leave for Monster Planes. Should have it back and installed by the end of Oct.

The gear we will have probably Monday. Air cylinders will still operate the doors, but the gear will all be electric.

We have the same problem with the one on the right. It ran and ran, as if the accumulator was not working properly. Finally, the motor locked up. We got it free again, but with no confidence it it anymore, we installed the new one, and it all started working perfectly. Nothing else was different, just that component. Had to be something wrong with it. A new one cost $450, plus shipping. Makes the conversion much more attractive.

We also have a problem with the cylinder on the left wing. The piston rod came loose inside.Again, we robbed the one from the kit we have. Don't know how much that would cost, but with the conversion, they get scrapped anyway. More money saved. As you say Sam, it just seems like a win, win.

Wing folding mechanism:
I left the wing detached for a couple days to make sure there were no leaks.
I added one more full 'manual hand' air pump pressure (for a total of six) to the accumulator and the wings seem to be working OK.
Only one comes up at a time (right one first on UP as well as DOWN) but, I'll take it!

Scott Prossen flys his F4F at 3600 RPM's so I adjusted my pitch to get the same input.
I had to adjust the 3 blade, 32" prop to about an 18 pitch and am also getting 3600 RPM's on the '250'.
This is plenty as his plane appears to be going at jet speed when he opens up the throttle (which is plenty fast for me!). This should also be much easier on all those moving parts.

I also was having trouble with the tail wheel not wanted to come down.
I had to put a spring on the end of the air cylinder attachment to overcome the slight negative angle of the mechanism. When installing the air cylinder, I could have avoiding this problem if I would have lowered the back end of the air cylinder for a better 'angle of attack' to the tail gear.

Video of engine testing with the new pitch setting:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKldZjslqSc

Post engine run head temperatures from about 160 for the lower two cylinders to around 190 degrees for the upper three cylinders.

No pictures, yet as RCU's web site gives me errors.

That setting seemed to work good for us as well Sam.

BTW, nice job on the cowl flaps. I intend to do the same thing on our #2 airframe.

I'll check it out. Thanks. We did it on our Meister P-47, but I think the P-47 is easier. Not as many flaps.

I was thinking of using the same switch as the canopy. Canopy open, cowl closed, and vise versa, as it would be with full scale most of the time.

gear mod:

I'm short on time to mail my gear update to Darrell so I made a temporary mod using some 1/8" thick aluminum bar stock and 1/4" long #6 hex head bolts.

ps: pictures have also been uploaded for previous posts now that the web site has fixed their problem (post 1176 and 1182).

MAIDEN FLIGHT:

(I'm at Scott's house so I'm logged onto his PC, and 'handle').

I took my F4U to Mac's rally of the eagles flyin so I could maiden her.
Since Dino was there, I let him do the honors (if Dino is good enough to fly Brian's B-26, he's good enough to fly mine!).
The crew consisted of Dino, PJ (behind me) and Scott.
She flew great with only minor trim corrections.

I'm looking forward to flying with you at Monster Planes.

Hello to those needing BAG or IV BAGS.

I am a physician and can order any bag you need from a 100cc saline bag to a 250cc bag to a 500cc bag, just let me know and I will get it for you at cost plus shipping. If you want to get 2 or 3 at a time or what ever. Gosh, I hate to hear of the problems you had.

You can private message me, or send a private email.

Usually I can get a shipment in 2 or 3 days from the time my nurse places the order and would ship full if you want or drain the saline out.

Just let me know.

I got depressed about my plane and put er up and have not been building on er. I flew my Comp ARF P-51 the last Saturday, it was wonderful, and flew my Yellow Zero. Kind of getting the itch to start building the Comp ARF Corsair again. For those that do not remember ... I ordered the pre painted gel coat "NAVY BLUE" Corsair, the ARF version, and what was shipped to me was green !! Thus I have been painting the plane.

That is very nice of you to offer to go to all that trouble for your fellow modelers Bill. I hope you get back on your Corsair again, and get her in the air. You will be glad that you did. It is an awesome airplane on the ground and in the air.

I can imagine your disgust when you saw the color, after paying to have it painted, but you'll be happy when you finish her.

Good luck with your build.

BTW, I talked to Mitch and it sounds like the wing conversion is gaining some interest since the video was posted.

Yo Gary,
I emailed him for my wing conversion.
Nice work on your new corsair build.
I sent my gear to Darrell for the weld fix and should be getting it back, pretty soon.

Very cool. How do you feel about the wing locking mechanism with this system? We have studied it and just don't see anyway it could come unlocked, being basically screwed into place the way it is.
