Thanks George !

I received the paint chips in the mail.... they will do just fine. Actully either one would.

During wartime they were not too fussy about shades except when it came to the zinc chromate on and around the cockpit.... yellow didn't last too long and was very quickly painted over.

Yours is looking gooood !

Am still workin out the warp in the right wing on mine... it's not that bad just 1/2 degree less washout than in the left wing. Guess I left it sit too long, like 4 or 5 years or so.

Thanks again.

Doug

Doug 1/2 degree is not bad, sometimes I think I built a straight wing but it still need airlon trim to the left or right, I don't know what I well do for muffler or look for another Pitts style for the RCS-90 engine, the Jet Tec pitts muffler is just a little to big and I don't want to cut out the cowl, I may weld one up, it well be ugly but functional.

WOW !

George, thats a HOSS of an engine... It should kick some butt !

I watched a DA 100 fly last Fri. Was impessed with the brute force it had but was not with the noise. Shows a need for a quieter prop and a good muffler. Course the 3d'er would not hear of it...... maybe he is already deaf or hearing impaired. Gotta get the DB meter out to the field one day soon and run some tests. Local regs. call for 88db. The county can shut us down and pass out fines if they don't pass.

I did finaly get the wing tips to a 0 - 0 in relation to each other this morning. Took 2 1/2 days of water treatment before it came out. Even then it popped the planking loose in a couple of places for a couple of inches each. Now to order the retracts from Sierria.. !!

Any luck with the muffler, am sorry I don't have a solution for that sized engine.

Looks like you got the last RCS they had.
Do you think a ZDZ Super 80 will cut it ?? Got 9+ HP depending on the exhaust...

I am getting set up for servo install, you can see the servo mounting rails,, I like using the large gears of a 1/4 scale servo in the center for the rudder pushrod and tail wheel cables,,, and Tower TS70 servos on either side for the elevator halves, the Great Planes 4/40 x 48" pushrods are easy to use, cut it to lenght and do a good job on soldering the clevises on the end, if the pushrods sleeves are braced to every other former the pushrods are mighty redgid and work fine, I have used this setup on more big airplanes than I can remember without one single problem, George.

Hi George, You mention that you have used the Great Planes pushrods in the past. About how long can they be from where they exit the fuselage to the control horn? I assume it is the same length to the servo from the rods last support. How do you account for the deflection introduced when the surface or servo moves? Do you have any problems soldering to the rod? Thanks a lot, Dan.

Dan, you have some good questions, first as you can see on the pictures I try to keep the free end about 6" or shorter, I do not worry about the deflection of the pushrod when the controls surfaces move, the deflection is taken up inside the sleeve since the sleeve is about 3/16 diameter and allows for a little slop of the pushrod as it travels, keep any sharp bends out of the sleeves on the installation.

I bend the rod slightly to meet the horn with no ell effect on performance or loss of strenght in the pushrod, inside the fuselage I try to secure to a former about every 12", I scuff the end of the pushrod with 300 grit paper than apply a little soldering paste on it, than slip the clevis on and apply heat with a soldering gun and let some rosin core solder which flow in easy, than I take and melt just a little bet of silver solder into it for strenght, George.

CANOPY When I built my Meister P-47 last year I was able to buy the glass fuse along with the glass canopy frame, it sure was a dirty job cutting the fiberglass frame out,,, but I ended with a real nice looking frame, It looks like Meister no longer carries the frames,,, anyways here goes the frame for the P-51, I am using .020 styrene sheet cut 5/16" wide to start the top part of the frame, I mask next to the strip on the canopy for refference and to keep the glue from seeping out. I take 400 grit paper to scuff the shine off of the side getting the glue on the styrene, add the glue and stick it to the canopy, gotta work carefull, slow, and clean to keep getting the glue where it should not go and it still gets on where it should not be. I use ca+ because I do not want to hold the peices on forever for the glue to dry, apply the glue along the center of the strips to minimize it oosing out the sides.

I am on the canopy for the second day, I hand painted the canopy frame green, just as I thought, I like the appearance of a spray painted frame better so I gave it couple coats this morning so I can clear coat it latter this afternoon.

For the fuselage I use a standard large HVLP spray gun,, for the small items like the canopy I use the same paint in a air brush,, I am using a latex water base interior flat wall paint for the green, the silver on the fuselage is Behr Luminiso acrylic water base glaze paint, for the canopy I used the latex flat green and the silver front rails I used testors silver. Everything gets a clear coat of Dupli color clear coat, than a coat of Model Masters flat clear coat final.

John your plane looks fine, this airplane regardless of who builds it is very impressive in size and flying at the feild and attracts attention, if a person has a little knowlege, ability and determination that is all it takes, George.

I am bit disappointed about the Ziroli rims. Axle hole is not very well centered. Other than that they look ok. How about yours? I also made the mistake to buy a 2.5" tire for the tail just to figure out that it won't fit into the Robart 160.

Sven that sure is a disapointment when they can't even get the axle hole centered after paying a price that can almost pay for my full size RV tire on my vehicle! I am lucky I don't have a problem on that issue with mine, as for the robarts 160, I personaly like the 160L better but I am sure I use 2.5 or 3" tires on mine I well have to check and post it latter, You know Rich who wrote few days back may have mentioned he has a extra quart ot the silver paint I used, maybe you can sweeten the pot a little on the shipping and see if he would be welling to ship it to you if he does not use it, George.

Had to check but just as I thought, I use 3" Du-Bro tires on the rear Robart 160L retracts, I don't recall if I had to drill out the axle hole, George.

Now I see where my problem is.
I got the one with the fork style. It's the 160 and not the Offset version. Well I dont think it's a big deal to get a 2" tire
Thanks for clarification...
