RE: Nosen P-51 (not). MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
Hi from New Zealand, so I have the Nosen Kit which I picked up from an older modeller who was getting out of the game.
Just wondering if I can use the photos and thread to build my one, How different is your ( Nosen (not) from the original.
I have a fibreglass cowl ( which I see Bert had trouble with),
Just wondering where to begin?
Has anyone put a DLE 111 twin in this and would it fit?
I am wondering what size motor would be appropriate.
have a Super Tigre 3000, which I think may be too small, was thinking a DLE 55??
Cheers Greg

I don not like using the fiberglass cowl, it is to bulky, I would rather build it up. As for the Nosen kits which I have had a few of them, the plywood for most is warped and to soft along with the balsa wood, they make good templates to trace parts on to new wood. the kits need to be reinforced for larger engines, they were originaly built for a Quadra 35cc. Twins well not fit, need a large single piston engine.
My build thread uses plans along with template parts outline I drew using the Nosen kits and plans as a guide , the parts are close but do not match, anyways it is lots of fun building and flying!.

George here are two pix from me flying last weekend. Plane handles like a teddy Bear!
Bert
And here's a Youtube link of it flying - I really like the second landing

And this one was stupidity on my part. I know better than to try and "float" a Mustang in. Here's what happens when you forget to keep your airspeed up with flaps down.

And here's the last "landing" of the day where something happened that has put my plane out of commission for a few months. Not sure what happened.

Sven - it was time consuming but there is no other way, I looked around but could not find any made up,,, so I took about 1/2" thick balsa and cut it into a circle, I don't remember the exact size maybe 3/4" diameter ( I would measure it but the plane was sold couple weeks ago) than the front was sanded round and curved,,, the back is sanded to the shape of the leading edge curve and glued on,, used Balsa lite filler to fill any gaps.. I drilled a 3/8" hole in the center part way and used 3/8" dowl for the barrels,, and carefully drilled 1/4" hole part way into the gun barrel,,, the hardest part was trying to get them all the same size and shape.... to finish it off I smeared epoxy with my finger over and sanded itwhen dry to get a good surface to take paint,,,, hope this helps, George.

Enjoyed reading this thread on the Nosen P-51, I had one about 10 years ago, the Nosen flew great, though the large fuselage really wanted to weather cock over into any slight cross wind and the Robart gear had trouble handing the side load and the landing gear at time would collapse under a large side load.

Mr. Rc Warbird Builder,
I believe your name is George. I have been pouring over this thread for the lastsix months or so as I began the construction of a P-51 Nosen I received 20 plus years ago. I am going slowly as I travel quite a bit for work, but it is very enjoyable. (I could never imagine purchasing an ARF, seems to remove all the fun) Ijustreceivedthe Robart retracts with aluminum hubs you mentioned as well as numerous othertips you provided that I have followed. Suffice to saywhen I am debating which way tohandle this detail or that, I have comfortknowing this thread existsmuch like an old friend you can always depend on. I have always enjoyed a good amount of power in my planes, although I fly them scale albeit sometimes fast on a nice low pass. To this end I have decided to incorporate an APT 8.4 cubic inch inline twin with a 4 blade prop for aesthetics. Anyway, I have a long way to go, however I wanted to thank you for all of your effortand knowledge you take the time to post to the site regularly.
Thank You George,
Regards,
Jim

RE: Nosen P-51 (not). MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
George,
I took a few pictures of my progress. As you will note, I doubled the stringers out to W-7 and ply doubled the full rib out to W-7 as well.Based on the included stringer lenghthmy plans had stretched almost an inch per wing however the rib spacing remained consistant.I decided to build to match the plan and the doubled stringer allowed for the added length. The remaining I cut myself on a table saw. This beefed up the wing for both the landing gear and the 8.4 inline twin I am installing. I am going to created litening holes in the ribs, but as I was not sure how much litening I would need am doing so post build. Of course on the right wing I will pre-make the holes I end up creating on this wing. I decided on the Robart Aluminum 10 spoke rims and the 5.5 inch tires.

Jim looks good, once you get started the build moves along pretty good, that is the most difficult thing for most people is getting started, I tend not to over-do on lightning holes on the wings, since the wing tubes I use and wheels and retracts tend to hollow out lot of the rib area, than again it is just personal prefference, George.

Jeff, you can use Don Smith canopy, the last one I built and posted has a DS canopy on it, it is slightly large so I trimed the edges and the final install looks good,.. The spinners I use is 6" Dave Brown,.. Fiberglass Specialties has a Nosen front cowl which fits over the entire front portion, I preffer to build up my fuselage to the spinner and make the front bottom portion which comes off, just a personal prefference it makes for a better looking construction,.. and Tony Howard who advertises on RCU has some nice exhaust stacks for the P-51 which I used,, George.

Hey guys, I to have a bud nosen P-51 thats been sitting around for years. I'm in need of an engine. It has robart retracts, and flaps ect. It weighs about 23 pounds with NOengine. I was thinking a zdz 80 like Bert, and 3w 75?
Speed and good flight characteristics are almost a must.
Thanks

Why would you get the DA85?Everyone says the DA85 engine is for like an extra with a tuned pipe on a sport plane. Your ZDZ80 sounds awsome with that muffler!!!!

Well lets see here, Mines 23 pounds, A 3W 75 weighs about 4.75 pounds which makes mine about 27-28 pounds give or take a few. So a 3w 75 may work also. Are you going to purchase the DA 85 for yours sense your zdz 80 is junk? I see lots of ZDZ80 motors that run fantastic and run smooth as can be.
