Default VQ Mig-3 ARF

I got a VQ Mig-3 ARF for X-mas and I thought I'd do a build thread on here about her. Anyway, upon first opening it I was fairly impressed. After getting everything out of the box I found that some things needed to be replaced/beefed up ; the hardware is disappointing, the firewall is ply but is need of strength, and the wood quality is somewhat poor. I'll be replacing/modifying many things. Although, I was impressed with the fiberglass parts and the covering. Its not as bad as those rumors floating around here claim to be. So far Im fairly impressed with it.

I'm having my dads friend, NCIS, paint the wingtips, the canopy, and the interior of the cockpit ; and I will being putting pics up once he finishes. They'll be painted - Wingtips, Red ; Interior, Black ; and Canopy, White. I just wanted to give him credit and thanks in advanced !

Zero,

No. It is not a full cockpit interior, It has room for a pilot and has a decal for the instrument panel. IMO it would look better if it were black, just a personal preference. BTW - The pilot is CRAP (its cheesy & made of cheap plastic), broke it not even 2 minutes out of the box, you'd be better off throwing it out and getting a new one. They also include a white sheet that is supposed to be used for the canopy you cut out yourself, I'm not messing with it ; it would look better painted, much better.

I did a review for RCWarbirds on this one. You will love the way it flies! I kept everything stock, but yes I did paint the canopy. The build was easy and like I said, this is one of the best flying airplanes this size out there. The review was here: http://www.rcwarbirds.com/Kit_Reviews/Reviews.htm.

Have fun and good luck!

Yeah I'll be there. Not sure who I'll be ground crewing for this year, but I'll be there. Hopefully Mitch and Matt don't lose birds in 2009...

Sorry its been so long. I was down in Iowa visiting family and celebrating the new years. Anyway, Today I got down to the workroom and worked on getting the retracts installed. It took a little bit of work but they fit. And I also test fitted the wing joiner, it was a bit loose but glue will fix that. I also got the fuse and the wings back from my dads friend and pics of them are attached ; once the canopy is installed he will be painting the canopy. He did a great job, thanks Barry !

Just a bit of an update here. The pushrods, etc. for the retracts were installed. The wings were glued but Iam waiting for a bit to let the glue dry. I was trying to make an attempt to get down their tonight but, now that schools back off of break the homework is effecting my worktime a bit. Regardless, I'll still have her ready to go in the spring. BTW - lovetoflyguy, I read your review and it was very helpful.

Okay, I got the wing and the retracts done (thanks to a little help from my dad) . We tried out the gear and everything worked fine. I also test fitted the scoop, dremeled it out, trimed the covering, glued it on, and put on the decal. We also put on the canopy, cowling, and spinner just to see how it would look. The red spinner was the one that came with it, I plan to use a SIG blue spinner w/ an APC prop. Here are some pics -

Me and My dad worked on finishing the stab up. Tonight we got the covering trimmed, epoxy mixed, and got her glued in. I'll have some free time tommorow considering my school got canceled due to EXTREME temperatures. Yeah, its gonna be a looong winter [&o]

Tonight me and my dad went down in the workshop and worked on er. The fin is glued in, it took quite a bit of sanding but shes in and its a perfect fit. Although taking a square the fin was a tad off, that was fixed w/ 30 min epoxy and a bit of tape. Tommorow or whenever I get down their again I'll start stripping my Hobbico Nexstar for servos, etc. I hate to butcher planes but you gotta do what you go to do. This is one of the more expensive hobbies and right now I've got 3 incomplete planes (1 being repaired, 1 in need of engine and reciever, and this one).

Okay, I've got my Nexstar completely stripped of what we need for the Mig. I also took the tailwheel assembly from my dads Phoenix Spitfire. We also put on the spinner, canopy, & cowling I'll be using and I took some pics. I know the spinner is a bit small, but you must admit the blue looks sweet ! The stock spinner is a 3 1/4" and the SIG blue one is only 3". Oh, well, SIG's is the only one that'll fit an APC. Anyway, the next step is to install the tailwheel and then install the servos, reciever, etc.

I came across 3 white plastic oval shaped raised up rounded pieces in the box. Does anybody know what they are and where are they to be placed on the plane ? They're all the same size and shape. Thanks.

I went down to the workshop and looked and had no luck finding them. My guess is that they are an extra piece of something. Oh, well. Anyway, now that the cowling is on and the engine is at the point of installment their came the issue of engine cooling. What engine are you guys using and how are you keeping them cooled ? Thanks.
