RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Noah, we have our scale show coming up on the 23rd. If you can sneak away stop by.
Saw a video of the avenger from ok. Still looks impressive in the air. I saw the bay doors open but no torpedo drop, did I miss it.
Take care and good luck on the new job.
Mike

I'll be there, one way or another, Mike!
The drop mechanism still needs work... I'm out of channels, so I need to get an expander, or gang two servos together, or get one of those million dollar power boxes from Royal. Just completely ran out of time! I'll get to it soon enough.
Are you shooting for completion of the 109 by June 23rd? At a minimum, hopefully I can see it there on static display.
See you soon!
Noah

Hi, Jeff. I'll be there on the 23rd. Owatonna is a question... but I've got it on the calendar, and we'll see if any of the OKlahoma guys are going, as I might be able to tag along with them.
Jeff, are you bringing the CJM COrsair? What's the story on that lead-sled?

What about the Spitfire, Jeff? Is is ready? What are you bringing, then?
(sorry, Mike, for the off-topic conversation. But I know you're just as excited and curious as I am!)

Looking cool Mike. I'm about ready to cut your graphics. Was the "8" supposed to be vinyl or a paint mask? I think the nose logo is going to be cool!
Thanks
Phil

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Thanks guys, i am getting excited seeing this project starting to come together. My goal is to have the 109 in the air and certified by the 23rd. It is basically flight ready except for the work to be completed on the engine and muffler. I need to make a scale tail wheel assembly, the wire tail wheel was temporary so i would be able to do some test flying before winter set in.
It would be really cool if jeff and noah could make it to davenport for our clubs scale meet. I know your planes are in OK noah, but if you need to get some flying out of your system you are more than welcome to burn up the sky with my ziroli mustang if you like.
Thanks phil, i am looking forward to seeing the nose art. It really sets off this paint scheme. I would like to do the "8" in paint but everything else would be ok to do in vinyl including the swastika if it is easier for you.

I have the swastika ready to cut as a mask, no problem doing vinyl though if you'd prefer. No more trouble either way but I'd need to adjust it a bit to do vinyl so let me know. There are two of the "8"s right? One on each side?

If you have masks ready to be cut that will work. I don't want to make you do anything over again.
The number 8 and the nose art is on both sides of the plane.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Thanks dave and kevin.
I have the engine with the cooling shroud mounted on the plane, test fit the cowl and am pleased that everything fit together well.
Next i started working on the exhaust. Everything is a tight, compact fit with the new engine so i thought it might be best to use the stock 222 exhaust cans and try to modify it for the 109.
I have the crossover tube fabricated. I plan on enlarging the bottom header can, then run a tube over to the muffler that i originally made for the dle 111.
Hopefully i will have the exhaust completed over the next day or two.

It's never simple, is it Mike!! Looks like you have it mostly sorted out, though. Keep going, buddy.
Trying to get a large group from Iowa City to come and participate in the scale meet. The more, the merrier, I would guess.
See you in a few weeks.
Best,
Noah

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Thanks for the comments casey, its great to share my passion with other people with the same interests. This build has been going on for over 3 years and i am getting excited that its getting close to taking flight.
A little more progress on the exhaust today and i should be finished tommorrow. If you look hard you can almost see a engine in all that aluminum.
Casey, i also love the fw190 and you found an unbelievable score with yours. At times i thought i should have built a big 190 instead of the 109 because the choice of engines would have been much easier than with a 109. Did you put your 109 on the back burner to work on the 190?

Yes and no...I'm ready to burn the last of the rivets in the wing, and then its final paint. There is the problem....I have not nailed down the actual scheme for Galland, and I dont want to mess it up. So rather than rush the paintjob, I'll snap this 190 out for a second, at least until I figure out. So much is done on the 190, that I can have it in the air in a short time...as soon as I get the tail mounted to the fuse, it wont be a moment and you will see it in finish paint, ready to maiden. No bells and whistles on this one.

Mike,
The vinyl and masks are ready. Let me know when you want to get them. Some pieces are fairly large so I'd rather not haul them around in the truck and risk damaging them. I can bring them to the field sometime though if I know you're going to be there.
Check out the nose art...

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Today was a big day for me because i was able to start the new dle 222 engine for the first time. I was really suprised how smooth the engine ran and it idled well even at a low 1200 rpm right out of the box. There was not much vibration compaired to my other engines.
It is going to take me a little time to learn to tune this engine because i am not used to tuning 2 carburetors. I am thinking the best way might be to use a tachometer to tune one carb at a time.
So far the fan seems to be doing a decent job of cooling the engine. I am going to have to keep an eye on the cylinder temps with the addition of the spinner and cowl.
