1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
I have been working on a ME-109E project from a set of brian taylors 68"plans that were enlarged 191% to be 1/3 scale. It will have a wingspan of 130" and a fuse length of 115".
I have been working on this project for 2 months and the build up of the fuse and the wing are about 75% completed. I have been machining the retracts from scratch and they are starting to look awesome.
Here a a few pics of the retracts, they have 82 degrees of movement. The main body is machined out of 2x3 angle aluminum. the pivot out of 1" plate and the strut out of 1.375" aluminum tube and solid round. The lower oleo strut is stainless and the air cylinders are from bimba.
finding a set of 8" wheels for this project was one of the things that was turning out to be a problem. i ended up buying 2 front wheels for a razor scooter and they were just the size i needed. i think i will make a new set of hubs but the tires are just what i was looking for. The rim, tire and innertube assembly was only $20 each new.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Thanks for the support guys. Here is the progress of where i am to this date. i am trying to hold the weight down under 55# so i want to be careful about the weight.
So far the weight is going according to plan. Here is what i have so far.
4.5# both retracts
3 # both wheels
10 # wing, at this point
6.5# fuse, at this point
-
24# this is the total weight so far
I am expecting up to 15# for the engine, prop and spinner, so this gives me about another 15# to stay under my 55# goal with the rest of the build.
The wing is 2 piece construction, split in the center, all the flight controls will be fabric covered as the original was and the tailwheel will not be retractable.
shotibf109- on the spinner i will probaly machine this item out of solid aluminum, but i have made spinners out of carbon fiber in the past.
sir crashallot- the retracts were made with a 3 in 1 lathe, mill, and drill machine. it has a 16.5" swing and a 31" bed for the lathe. Power feed on the longitunal and cross table. Power feed is desired as it gets rather tiresome turning the handles manually.
Its not as big as a commercial grade machine, but it is perfect for a hobbiest like me. I also used a gas flux mig welder to weld the lower stainless strut.
here is a few more picks for you guys.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
ive been hitting the project pretty hard for the last month and i thought i would post an update. the wing took forever to get to the point to finish the sheeting. after the wing the tail went smoothly and i feel like i am starting to get somewhere.
next i have to finish the bottom of the fuse and blend it into the wing.
so far the weight is still looking good, i threw it on the scale before i assembled it together and this is where i am at this point.
#18.2 wing
#8.2 fuse
-
#26.4 total
at this time i am on the fence as far as what to do for a engine. experience and my flying style tells me i will need about 150cc for a model this size. the fuse is not wide enough for a opposing twin so this leaves me with the option of an inline twin. does anybody know of a good inline engine i could use?
i would like to turn a prop around 30" so my only other option i have been considering is to use a 100cc single and design a prop reduction unit turn a prop around this size.
here is a few more pics,

ok guys, i've seen this beast up close and held the retracts, awsome work. Mike is one heck of a builder, cant say enough about him. He is also helping me paint my Ziroli corsair. This 109 is gonna be the cats as!. Mike keep up the good work and dont get burnt out. p.s. , these retracts are just too cool, cant believe what you can do with a lathe. And dont worry about the corsair, we allready have plenty to fly.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
thanks for the support teresa. its starting to look awesome now that i have her on her feet. cant wait until i am at the point to start detailing, then it will look like a 109.
warbirdcolors, sounds like your project is about the same size as mine. keep me updated with any solution you may have been considering with the power system.
Aaron, thanks for the link but i think 100cc might not be enough power for this model. i cant seem to be able to find any details but i think i saw somewhere that evo had a 150cc inline twin.
i have been thinking about a paint scheme like adolf gallands plane. i just love the yellow nose & tail. if anybody has links to any pics of this type of scheme i would love to see them.

Mike,
I have a large format book with some cool 3 view color plates in this "yellow nose" scheme if you want to borrow it, you're welcome to. There's a couple other 3 view color schemes as well.
Teresa,
"Your" Corsair? I'll be anxious to see you or even Mark fly it.

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
Hey Mike,
I just got back from Toledo where I chatted up the guys from Troy Built Models regarding new inline engines. They said ZDZ was coming out (if I remember correctly) with a 160cc and another size (duh, I forget) bigger than the 100cc. They said the 160 should be out and for sale in mid-May. I think it was Gene that said "If you duct all your inlet air to the rear cylinder (forgetting any efforts around the front cylinder), the inline twins "run fine....""
If you can believe the promo-speak, you should have a couple of powerplant choices in the very near future.
BTW, I've a super scale 1/5 Emil done up in Galland's B of B scheme and a couple of color references for this aircraft if you need some help.
Keep up the great work!
Regards,
Lynn

RE: 1/3 Scale ME-109E Project
phil- i would really like to see what you have. possibly monday night?
lynn- thanks for the heads up on the engines. it will be a while before i will need to make a decision about the engine and i want to keep all my options open.
i am just kicking around some ideas about the paint scheme and i have noticed some done in shades of gray and others of the same type of camo scheme have a little tint of green.
i think i will have to find some documentation with rm numbers and do some matching with paint chips.
i have the fuse fully sheeted now and am starting to work on the cowl with gun channels and the scoop on the bottom. i will be molding a cowl out of fiberglass so i am planning on building much of the detail into the plug.
thanks for all the support and sharing guys,
mike
