    RE: NEW H9 P51 Mustang 60 ARF

    what kind of retract servos are you guys using.   I see the recommended ones, but the spectrums are a lot more powerful but the specs are a little different.  Anyone use the spectrum retract servos in the plane.  How much room do i have to play with in there

    I recommend using the ones it recommends. I had two different brands of nice retract servos and neither one fit due to the very small area. I ended up buying the RT88's and they fit perfectly. Some other servos might fit, but not sure. The RT88 servos seem to have plenty of power in my plane on 6 volts.

    the spektrum ones im looking at have about the same dimensions for length and width.  The only difference is height.  Im wondering if they will fit.  they are .10in higher.  The only reason i ask is that they have 246oz/in of tq

    One of the ones I tried was the JR791 and although it was nearly the same size as the RT88, the height was off just a little and wouldn't fit. There is almost no room for the servo to be off in there. I think those Rt88's must have been specifically designed for these retracts.

    Standard digitals will work everywhere (70 to 80 in-oz torque) except the retracts. I used Hitec low profile for the retracts at 6V, and it was barely enough. I recommend sticking with the rt88s.

    Spektrum; "The A7000 features adjustable travel which makes installation easy and hassle free, no more difficult adjustments with retract linkages to get the proper throw needed to go lock to lock. The A7000’s incredible 260 oz-in of torque can rotate up to nearly 180 degrees. When paired with the DX8 or other transmitters with a servo speed function, the travel speed of the A7000 can be slowed to actuate the gear at slower speeds for a scale look."

    This is the servo I'm using on my mustang and they work great. Only a minor issue, when using the rubber grommets with the servo the end that mounts up to the outboard side of the wing was tight, length wise. Height and width no problems.

    As per the quote from specktrums website "The A7000 features adjustable travel which makes installation easy and hassle free" ...... setting up these factory retracts is an utter walk in the park, I have never built a plane before (helis yes, planes no), and it was nothing but totally simple to do (just ensure that the servo arm is inline and the rest is easy), so there is no need for adjustable retract servos, just ones that FIT!

    Karl Dittmer's "Dopey Okie" I would guess. Nice choice.

    hook123 & Chad Veich;
    Looking at the picture of Karl Dittmer's Dopey Okie, to me it look like Hangar 9 model their plane like this one. Now when they come back in-stock, I will pickup another one. Now if someone would bring out a "A" model P-51, that would be sweet!!

    RE: NEW H9 P51 Mustang 60 ARF

    looks very nice.  Im close on mine as well. i have the engine all tuned in and all electronics all set up for the most part.  All i have left is order a pitts muffler and fit the cowl and she's ready to fly.  Im gonna do some taxing testing before i fly it and see how it acts on the ground before i fly it so i know what its going to do or not do on the ground.

    I added support to the tail wheel but i still do not like the factory wheel.  what kind are you guys going with 2 in durbro rubber or something along those lines ?

    RE: NEW H9 P51 Mustang 60 ARF

    Jet22b,
    H9 did the scheme after Maj. Preddy's Cripes a mighty 3rd. However, if you look into Cripes, she didn't have full Normandy Invasion Stripes. She had only the black stripes under the side star and bar. The same with Dittmer's Doppey Okie, as I go along I plan to cover the white parts under my side stars with aluminum paint and re-add panel lines.

    Chaos2984,
    I will do the taxi test as well, and I agree that stock tail setup has left me thinking.....For now I will go with it. I have followed all the great advice here; beefed up all the wood in the lander gear spots, CG is at 4.5", actually a little further forward of that mark and so on. And if the weather holds off tomorrow she will be taxi tested, and maybe flown! I will have access to Herington, KS' airport all to the rc types all day!

    Gregory

    edit;

    Jet22b I agree an "A" would be closer to the prototype which would allow for a 3 blade set up, I agree, H9 "A?"

    hook123,
    Back in tghe 70's Top Flite had a model "A" P-51 kit. I wanted to buy and build one so bad, but at that time my building skill was not up to that level yet.

    You may already be aware but, at one point in time, all of these aircraft carried full invasion stripes. There may not be any photographic record of it but the stripes were put all the way around to begin with and then were removed at some point after the invasion. Often, as with these two Mustangs, the stripes were removed from just the top sides first to make them less conspicuous from above. As time permitted they were eventually removed completely in most cases. Just FYI in case anybody was wondering.

    Hi Chad,

    How hard will be....based on your P51D design to change it and make a B model ?
    Just a thought. I can furnish you the material for p51B.
