I am so jealous! That is a great looking plane!

How tall would you say the turtle deck is at the canopy?
Congrats Chad! That's Two For you Dude!
Matt,
I scaled up my 1/6 scale Czech Mate plans to 1/4.5 and the turtle deck is just a fraction over 2 inches tall. (2.046" to be exact)

Good question Andy! I had not really intended to release the plan as I did not think it would be very popular but both the big and small Yak designs have far exceeded my expecations in regards to how many requests I get for plans. The little Yak plans are very basic at this point and will need lots of clean up to be to a marketable standard but I will get to it eventually. Particularly so if the prototype flies as well as I think it is going to. The plans will also show a less radically modified version which opens up a few more paint job options with just a bit of personalising by the builder.

Hi, guys! been a while but I'm about to start work on my beloved Yak-11. I'm thinking about going with an electric set up. original plan was a moki 150 but that just isn't in my budget. I just got settled into my new house, so setting up a work place is about to get started. here is a pic of my work done on the Yak thus far.

RE: Yak-11 scratch build
Looks fantastic Matt, good to have you back! I've not heard anything from any of the other Yak builders out there in quite a long time. Kevin up in Canada had his airplane ready to fly but I've not heard any news on a test flight and he has not responded to my emails. Hope everything is OK with him. I think the airplane is well suited to electric power and I look forward to seeing some more progress on your build. I am leaning towards electric power for my smaller Perestroika build as well. Thanks for dropping in and please keep the updates coming.
If you don't mind please send me the current pictures of your build so I can add them to my collection.
Thanks!
PS - FYI, Robert's little Czech Mate now has a couple dozen flights on it and he is very excited about the way it flies. He says that it would probably make a pretty decent pattern ship! The big one can only fly better!

RE: Yak-11 scratch build
Matt has finished his 82 inch Yak-11 electric build and sent along some pics for me to share. Matt has done some taxi testing, including some high speed stuff with the tail up, but has not flown it yet. I think the airplane looks fantastic and am anxiously awaiting the test flight report. Good luck Matt and great job!

Been a while since I updated this thread! Matt has been flying his Yak, seen in the previous post, for over a year now and reports that it flies great. A recent "incident" required some relatively extensive repairs but Matt has the Yak looking better than ever. In the course of the repairs some additional work was done including the addition of gear doors to the tail wheel as well as some more markings for "Czech Mate". Matt and the Yak participated in Joe Nall 2014 and some video can be seen at the link below, starting at about 7:15, for anyone interested.

Keep an eye out here for some other potentially interesting news regarding the Yak plans and parts in the very near future.

Plans are now with Jerry Bates and should be available through him very soon. A vendor for the glass cowl has also been found and a mold is in the works as we speak. Last, but not least, I will be offering a vaccum formed canopy for the stock Yak-11 just as soon as I can find the time to make up the plugs. For those wishing to do a racer the canopy will be up to you, although I suspect there are a number of off the shelf items that could be modified to work. I will update here when the plans hit Jerry's web site and with information on where to get the cowl when it is ready.

That is so awesome!! I'm in on the cowling! Let me know. Also I have CAD files if you want to build one from balsa. I have done it 3 times now... The last one a local kit cutter helped me with the "design" of it and cut it out for me. Turned out nice.
Cheers!

Hello Chad,
I just got your Yak-11 plans and a short-kit from Bob Holman.
Thanks for doing the Yak-design.
First I want to finish the makeover of the Graupner Yak-11.
Regards Aldo

Kevin continues to make great strides on his Yak-11 build and here are the most recent pics. These photos really stimulate me to get back to work on my own prototype! Kevin is estimating an all up weight of less than 16 pounds. Keep in mind this is an 82 inch span airplane with nearly 1000 squares so at 16 pounds it should be absolutely delightful to fly. Keep on truckin' Kevin!
Do you know if Kevin manufactured his own cowl, or where he may have sourced it from?
Thanks,
Richard Hummel

Kevin actually created a plug and molded several fiberglass cowls for himself, me, and a couple of others. I am afraid that I have already passed along the two spares that I had, sorry. However, Jeff Foley is working on a new plug and mold and will be offering the cowl at some point in the (hopefully) near future. I have not spoken with Jeff in a couple of months about it but I will shoot him an email and see if I can get an update. Stay tuned...

I am looking at my power plant options, and trying to choose between a couple of radials. I have solicited the help of an engineer who is helping by using a power to weight formula taking into account wing area etc to choose the engine.
We need to know the approximate weight of the bare airframe as close as possible.
Does anyone have this weight?

I've sold lots of plans to overseas builders but I don't have any sort of record of who or when. I assume this guy was one of them, and he's doing a nice job, but I know nothing more of the project than what can be surmised from the web site.

This guy might if you can get past the language barrier: http://www.brabantseluchtvaartclub.n...v%20-%2011.htm

But the photos tell the story quite well too.

It is decided! I am going to stick with the existing scale (82") and use the Saito FG84R3 for the power plant.
Next step is to print the drawings and find a kit cutter.
Now if I could just find some additional time and money

For anyone who may be building the stock 82 inch span Yak-11 please be aware that their are some issues with the design of the fuselage in the canopy area as well as with some of the parts shown on the template sheets. This will not be an insurmountable issue if you plan to use a single seat or racing style canopy but may cause some serious headaches if you intend to build the airplane with the stock two seat canopy as shown on the plans. Sale of the plans have been suspended while I work to correct the problems but if you are already building or have the plans and intend to build please contact me and I will give you all the details.
