So would I ! LOL Well there is a build thread on Top-Flites 60 size Mustang ARF
Ifigured someone would start a thread for this P-47
I haven't ordered one yet, but really thinking of 'pushing the button'. If I do, and no-one else has started a build thread yet: I will.

UPDATE: I just got the OK from wife: One Top Flite P-47D ARF is now on it's way to my house. Expect delivery early next week (June 8~10).

I'm never one to build it 'exactly as on the box', so here is how I will finsh mine as:

Can someone who has this plane measure the cowl for me? I have a Saito 170 3 cyclinder radial that needs a home.

I prefer to begin a new thread. That way, people who are intersted in the build/ mods' part won't have to wade thru 4 pages or so of stuff that has nothing to do with the build. A fresh start, so to speak.
I'll make sure my camera batteries are charged before it arrives.
I thought MOST of the others were undamaged? Oh well, I find out soon enough.
Altho I would REALLYlike to put a Saito 1.00 in mine, I don't have one, so I'll use my trusty Saito .91
I am planning to use Robart HD mechanicals, since I ASSUMEthat the stock retracts have 5mm struts as the Mustang does, and it's just too much work to install RoboStruts on those 5mm wires.

Iplan on building mine bone stock with a Saito .82. My fuse was picked up at the hobby shop Monday, so I would anticipate a new fuse early next week.

Itugged on the ailerons and flaps and they seem to be solidly glued. Darn good idea, IMHO.

Dave J. , how does yours fly ?

rcmigpilot,

cowl measurments as follows. From top to bottom aft of cowl 91/4 inch.
From side to side center of aft cowl 7 inchs.
From front center to aft center of cowl 7 inchs.

I hope this helps.  Only reason Im not building yet is cause Im due to be away most of my summer so this bird will fly next year.  Ill probably glass her.

Best.

Dave

Thanks Dave, looks like the cowl in just a bit too small for my engine.

Don't be fooled bydisplacement, a radial makes quite a bit less power than a single of the same displacementdue to friction losses. Ny 170 makes just a bit more than a 120 4 stroke and quite a bit less power than a Saito 150. Normal flying prop is an APC16 X 8.

For all you guys that want more pictures: Tower has finally posted picures of replacement parts:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=TOPA0955&P=Z

Also, NOTETOBUILDERS concerning Dihedrawl:

Top Flite did not incorporate scale dihedrawl in their Mustang ARF for reasons unknown. This not only takes away from it's scale authenticity a little, but also makes it slightly less stable in the roll axis.
I intend to check my P-47's against scale drawings that I have, and if they are not the same: I intend to correct it (BEFOREI permanantly attach the wings to each other).
FYI: drawings show 4 deg onupper surface, 7.5 deg on lower surface (must have 3.5 deg taper).
Measuremnets are from horizontal centerline of each wing, NOTcombined/ wings together. In other words: should be about 172 deg where wings meet on upper surfaces, 195 deg on lower surfaces where wings join.

Here are some photos as I begin my build. I'm going with a Thunder Tiger F-91S four-stroke.

Just received mine today. It isn't available in Australia as yet, so I purchased one off Tower Hobbies. It only took 4 days to get here; now that's service.

Just awaiting some 3 1/4 Robart Wheels, .60 size strut covers and an Aces Of Iron WWII pilot.

Can't wait to get started and can't wait to see how it flies with an OS 75AX up front.

Many are having problems with the plastic frame braking with the stock retracts. I have robart spring air retracts in mine with the 3/8" struts. The rails need to be lower and tilt more to the inside of the plane. What I did was glue a second rail under the first, then dremel cut the top rail away with a cutoff wheel and an exato for the corners. The rail needs to be about 1/8" lower toward the wing tip and 3/16 toward the belly. The effect is to recess the retracts AND tilt them inward. Most of the rail will be cut away so that is the reason for the second rail under this original.

Hmmmm looking at the picture of the rudder, it looks as if they corrected the no-scale profile of the lower third of it.  The Gold Edition kit is basically straight top to bottom, but you can see the rudder in the picture has the correct scale bulge at the bottom.

A great option for you gents wanting to go with a 1.20 size engine is:

http://vqwarbirds.com/products/access/rcv130cd.html

lower overall profile...has about the same profile as a common .91 4stroke...

also great option for that TF P-51D !!

Mine came 3 days ago, but I'm not getting much time to work on it just yet. For the 1st time in about 2 months: I worked more than 32 hours during a week. In fact, I will aslo be working Sat & Sunday for the 1st time since early Jan. That means that next weeks paycheck will be DOUBLEwhat I have been getting for the past 5 months.
So what am I gonna do with all that extra money? I ordered a Saito 1.00 GK for my P-47. That black dummy radial just seemed to be begging for a Saito GK.

One of the things that really caught my eye when un-packing the parts: that instrument panel looks fantastic, and requires no assembley (unlike the Top Flite Mustang ARF version).
Shown in the other 2 pics is the 'hidden hatch' just forward of the cockpit. The round wooded discs are covering the magnets, while dowel rods hold it in back.

Due to muffler size issues I've opted to go with the nes OS 110 FSa with onboard glow. Probbably run a 16x8.

Hi D,

where did you here this?

I have the TF P-51 arf with the same retracts. Read the P-51 thread that jock started and you will read many tails of breakage during taxi for maiden! If not first landing.

I'm not sure if that's the case with the P47. I read on another forum, I think rcgroups, that these retracts are different to the P51 arf's. It was written by someone who owns both models. I hope he's true because I didn't plan on spending any extra on this plane as it's going to be my cheap weekend basher.
