My friend Dan Davidson is finishing paint on my Mustang. It is a Top Flite ARC,reinforced, glassed, and painted in ppg.He is a wizard. In these pics it has not been wet sanded or buffed yet.Power will be a ZDZ 80.I've had 3 of these, all with G62's,and they flew well. This one will haul the mail.I will update this thread with more pics as they are available.
I am one of the cd's for the IMAA rally of giants. We are hosting it at our club in Hamburg,pa,fathers day weekend. This, and many other awesome airplanes will be there.Come fly with us.

RE: Miss America
Erik, That is beautiful.Ihad a sport scale strega once. They are verygood flyers.
I also have a T/F Mustang with a G-62 running a APC /T-6 racing prop. (clock 130 level)
With you running the ZDZ 80 in yours. You should look in to the 80cc version of this prop, A Formula 1 GT prop. Should really make it HAUL..... But you have to call them to order it.
The first pic is from 2003
The second was from last week.

BTW, watch out for some ofmy crew going up there, They are known as the Traveling Circus. kind of a rag-tag groupThey will bring a crowd. Sorry I can't make it. I gotta work

RE: Miss America
Thanks for the props there Erik. The Miss America Mustang has to be one of the coolest planes to ever take to the air, in all her incarnations.
The paint is all PPG. Basecoat is Deltron DBCacrylic urethane with DCU2021 urethane clear on top. It gets sanded all the way through 3000 grit 3M Trizact, compounded by machine and then finished with 3M Ultrafina glaze. A few pics of the polished result follow.

Erik,
What are the decals made from and who did you have do the work. They look excellent and pretty accurate. Thanks for doing the old style tail trim, I'm not thrilled with the new design!

RE: Miss America
Chris,
Most of the graphics are cut from vinyl. The exceptions are all the graphics you see in white - stars included - that's paint. The plane was first based in white. The "11's, stars and "Air Classics" were masks I had made. They are applied and I continued on with the remaining base colors. The masks are removed exposing the underlying white colors. The remainder of the graphics were applied and then the entire plane cleared. I can post a few pics showing the process in a little more detail if you are interested.
As far as who cut them, that's a buddy of mine. He has his own little graphics business locally and has helped me greatly in the past. I'll provide him with drawings of what I need, he will scale them if I haven't already and cut them. Does excellent work but he's starting college ina few months so it looks like I'll be having to search elsewhere myself.

RE: Miss America
Erik,
All Ican say is AWESOME PLANE!!!!! The P51 Miss America is my all time favorite plane.... I recently completeda Hangar 9 60 size ARF with a YS91 & Keleo scale exhaust. I have thought about doing exactly what you did by getting an ARC of the Top Flite kit and painting it myself, but I could never make one look as good as yours does.
If you really want to set the plane off, go to keleo-creations.com. Kelvin makes the scale P-51 Mustang exhaust for large gas motors like the G62 and the DA85 and he might make one for your ZDZ80 as well. The scale exhaust on your plane would just be icing on the cake...
I've enclosed a picture of my "Little Brother" of your plane. Good luck with your beautiful plane. Let us know how it turns out.

I can tell you with all honesty I'm going to hate giving it back to Erik. I've never had a P51 of any sort before myself but now it's getting to the top of my wish list.

Graphics... I had a painting stencil made that followed the outline of the wings of the Phillip's 66 logo. Painted in some gold i made and then overlayed the graphic.

Wing is finished. Polishing was completed tonight so now it goes back to a couple of other buddies to get it finished up to fly. It's been a pleasure painting this one - I learned alot about the Miss America Mustang and it's history. Researching the internet for pictures to use to pattern the finish and graphics revealed just how many different (some very subtle) versions of the famous racer there are. I hope I did her proud - this one defintely goes on the workshop wall.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the info on the decals. Neat composite of techniques that work so well on the model. Man, you can lay on the paint!
Gorgeous.

RE: Miss America
Today was maiden day for Miss America. What a sight. She flies like she's on rails. We got three flights on her today and by the third the ZDZ80 was starting to show just what it can do. Once this motor gets on step and propped she is going to be a bullet. Only a few minor issues crept up that need to be taken care of but man what a sight. During the third flight Erik started to pass the transmitter around so we could all get a little stick time. I wanted to hide under a car when it came to me but I'm glad I got to take a few laps around the field. On behalf of myself (the painter) and Berk (the builder) we couldn't be happier and more proud to see her finally take to the air. Erik did a great job piloting her through the first flights and didn't hold back anything. She's only going to improve as time goes by. See you at the field Wednesday.
