WOD (cont)
This is the plane bitten by a ground hog.
His home (holes in the ground) were covered up by safety cones plus the fencing and planes and people had the ground hog confused so he took it out on a plane.
Also, a very large Hawker Hurricane.
A Ziroli stearman with a Moki radial engine.
RC tanks/jeeps among the planes.

A Kellogg Avenger and a 19' WW I bomber.
Here's Jeff Quesenberry's LA-7.
Jeff and about five of his buddies came in from Minnesota.
A well detailed 190.
Since it seemed like 80% of the planes were from Ziroli plans, it seemed appropriate that he was also at the show!
Pictures of the 33 WW I planes that got up at once at the half time show.

Full size planes made their appearance at the half time show.
And last: some hooter girls!

NOW I see what you mean about the WOD being such a great event/ worth driving 10 hours for.
How about NW Indiana this coming Sat? I will be starting a post in a few minutes about the Sundowners annual Warbird Day: it is about as big as the CARDS event, but is only 1 day. About 20 miles SE of Gary, IN.

Hey guys,
Can't head up north since my buddies are having their Ohio Dawn Patrol flyin this week end (I'll be getting there Friday around noon).
I'm bringing my 1/3 scale Nieuport 28.

RE: ROAD TRIPS: 2009
NEW ZIROLI BEARCAT F8F.
While at WOD, I picked up a bearcat.
It's ready to fly.
Glassed and auto painted with vinyl insignias.
Has robart gear/wheels with retracting tail wheel.
Powered by a Sach's 4.2 (about 65 cc) turning a 22X10 Xoar prop.
It's never been flown but all the surfaces are straight and aligned so she should fly well (anything Ziroli flies well!).
86" wingspan but weighs in about 32 pounds (within ziroli's web site's weight and with virtually no nose, lots of lead is needed up front).
pic 1:
As with any new plane, everything is gone over and checked.
The builder did an excellent job of building it but each of us has their own preferences.
I put all heavy duty ball sockets on the flaps and ailerons.
pic 2:
Air and wires bundled together.
A UP valve is used.
pic 3:
Tail feather controls:
Two Hitec 645's for the elevator plus rudder and tail wheel servos.
pic 4:
Front end:
The entire fire wall screws on the fuse so the tank and throttle servo all comes out with the engine (I wish all planes had this!).
pic 5:
Gears closed.
Kind of like the wildcat where the gear door covers are part of the fuse.
pic 6/7:
Gear open.
The Firewall is right next to the front of the wing.
pic 8:
The Sach's engine has a mechanical advance.
I was a little concern about an old engine but my buddy, Greg Hahn, says they are good motors and the mechanical advance can be adjusted.
You just have to make sure you firmly flip the prop and don't try starting with the throttle full open or she will bite ya'.
My concern about power was soon subsided when the builder started her on one flip and she idled at 1700 and maxed out at 7200.
pic 9/10:
The builder put a functional exhaust in but isn't presently connected: cool.

pic 1:
Since the large engine only has one bolt to hold the prop on, I cut two pieces of sticky back side sand paper to put on the engine and prop hub.
pic 2:
The builder had an old Byron dummy radial for it (nice looking radial).
pic 3-5:
On her feet.
Gear test video:
A pretty long delay on when the gear comes up (I'll have to check UP's site on timing adjustments):

RE: ROAD TRIPS: 2009
The only thing to is Sam, put a restrictor into the down line - the the gear don't slam down that hard. The little video shows the airplane inverted - in the right side up they even slam harder. These restrictors work great and the gear looks so nice.

July 17-20 (7th trip)
Ohio Dawn Patrol
40 miles.
We had a great time at ODP with very unusual cool weather (70's) but lots of flying.
I counted 52 WW I planes with the bulk of them being 1/3 scale and above.
Lots of good food and movies at night.
The setting is ideal for WW I as the aeromodeler's field is in a valley with two grass runways crossing and trees all around, including in the pits.

RE: ROAD TRIPS: 2009
One quick word to your Bearcat - I was tired of connecting wires. Ailerons, Flaps, UP Valve servo and landing light. I put them all together in a 21 pin connector and just works like a charm. One plug two screws and done...

Some 100 year old Wright brother's film that my brother emailed to me.
========================
A film clip from the Austrian archives about the Wright Brothers demonstrating their plane
in Italy in 1909. What is even more fantastic is there was an on-board camera on the Wright plane and the last part of this film shows it. Wilbur Wright is at the controls on both of the flights. Its a GREAT video considering it's 100 years old and the quality/weight of the
equipment of that day. Note the pitch stability and the yaw string on the canard.
Producer's note: This flight demonstration of American aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright was of a special historic nature: it involved images from the first camera aboard a plane! The two-seater plane with Wilbur Wright at the helm did a lap before an audience of photographers, army men and noteworthy moustached men and just avoided the cameraman on the ground. Then the plane started up again, followed a launching pad and took off: the camera was fixed for the first time on the ground that gave way…and the emotion was there, so great you could almost touch it! The image was as unstable as the cabin of the plane flying at low altitude, flying over the countryside and gradually approaching a town.

July 24-26 (8th trip) .
Warbirds over Lexington, Kentucky.
115 miles
PJ was the CD for this event.
I had a great time at their WOL.
The field has a 700' paved runway (plus grass) and no trees.
They just installed 120volt outlets in the club house which will be a real plus for us pilots who need to charge up our batteries.
pic 1-3:

Videos:
Ziroli P-51 landing.
About 20 MPH winds (as you can hear on the video).
Gale was about the only pilot with enough kahonnas to fly that day!

Sunday: much lower winds.
