Default ROAD TRIPS: 2009

I thought that I'd start a separate thread on flyins that Iattend instead of just posting them under one of my 'build' threads.
Joe Nall: May 12-16:
460 miles
Unfortunately, I posted my first road trip to Joe Nall under Robart P-47 so reference is:
See posts 227-232.

==============
CARDSwarbird flyin: June 6/7:
Located at Grand Ledge, Michigan (just west of Lansing).
275 miles.
Since the distance was pretty far, Ileft home around noon on Friday, got there around 6pm, set up my planes and slept in my 'camper' so Iwas ready, Saturday morning for the show.
The CARDS have a real nice field, all grass, about 150' wide and 1000' long.

Here's some videos that Itook of a ziroli P-61, B-25 and a scratch built 160" C-130 flying together:
Ziroli P-61/B-25 taxi:

The weatherman was calling for rain but , as you can see, it turned out to be a nice day:
Here's the road going to the CARDSfield (needless to say they shouldn't be bothered by neighbors!)
Ibrought my C-45 (blue), B-25 and spit.
Another white C-45 plus ziroli's Bear cat, P-61, F4U, P-40b and a meister 190.

Note 5 cylinder radial on that first picture as well as a 3 cylinder on the F4U (this pilot's B-25 also has 3 cylinder radials).
I believe the plane in the third picture is called a swordfish with prototype folding wings.

Itried to take pictures of all the planes but probably missed some so feel free to update/correct any additions.

One nice thing about long road trips through the midwest (green belt) and not just following the interstate, is seeing a lot of Americana , ie farms and nice old houses with lots of character.

Sam, you really know how to make the most of retirement.
I'm hoping I can retire soon, and go on some road trips like you.

Sam,

How did you know where Ilive?I need to paint the trim and fix up the yard. How many trips and miles do you go on average each year? Do you ever go to the Fondulac Fly-In in August? I don't think owning my own businesses I'll ever be really totally retired until it's to late in life. I go to close Fly-ins like in WI, MN, IN, MI, and OH. Anything under 350 miles. But they are few and far between. I wished I lived in Florida with all their Fly-ins. Very nice pictures you posted.

Barry & Sam,

I think you should give some serious consideration to the October 15 - 17 Monster Planes USA event. Some real high class projects show up there. Some of the models are unbelievable. A work of art in themselves. The atmosphere is simular to Joe Nall. Very well organized, safe and a friendly group to say the least.

C'mon Barry, I used to live in Milwaukee and any excuse to get to Florida in October is a good one. Sam, you have a a plane or two that would qualify for the 35lbs minimum I'm sure. Bring 'em down and enjoy the open flying all day. No 3D stuff and a full sized paved active runway to takeoff on. Must be a 100 feet wide. So rudder management for those that are out of pavement practice is not an issue.

Check out the website and come and join us. Carl is coming from Wisconsin so I'm sure you can!!! http://www.franktiano.com/MonsterPlanesFrameset.htm

Hope to see you guys there!

Kind regards,

Scott Prossen

It's been four years (June, 2005) and there's really nothing not to like about retirement.
I've signed up for warbirds over Delaware and also Fondulac and Muncie.
I'll be going to some 'locals' also as Blacksheep warbird flyin in Danville, IN looks like a good show, plus Lexington and a few others around my area. We've got our IMAAlegal flyin this Saturday at GCRCC field.
Ilimit my travel to 600 miles so no Florida or Rockies trips or bomber field (but it would be nice to attend those).
For me, every flyin has to be within one days travel.
Today, I worked on my C-45 Beechcraft G-38's:
One engine has lost some of its compression (only about 6000 versus the usual 6700)and the other engine is vibrating.
Icould have them rebuilt but they are old so Ijust ordered two new ones.
At $310 each, they are cheap and why risk losing a plane.
One flap was also vibrating so the digitals were replaced with HS-645's.
The rebuilt 3W-75 was put back into the yellow Texan and a test run looks good.
Tomorrow, I'll be working on the Robart P-47 (also has a 3W-75) and see if Ican finally get a maiden on her, this week.

Sam,

You sound like a very happy and lucky man! We're all jealous. Sure wish you would consider Florida Monster Planes. I know it's way over your 600 mile boundry but it's worth it. After meeting you at Joe Nall this year I just knew you would enjoy that Flyin. You more than many, would enjoy all the huge scale planes that show up there. It's like a flying shopping mall of what you want to buy and build someday. So many "one off" planes and all of them beautiful.

As I wish you a continued enjoyable retirement I want you break out of your comfort zone and mark Oct 15th - 17th MPUSA on your calander and at least think about it! We'd sure love to meet you.

Sincerely,
Scott

Well, my next trip is Saturday (June 13).
Fortunately, it's only 15 miles away at my GCRCCfield.
We're having our giant scale flyin.
Any aircraft that meets IMAAminimum size.
Attached is the 'flyer'.
No landing fee, good and reasonably priced food plus a raffle prize.
Here's also a few pictures of the field.
Besides the main paved runway, we also have a nice grass runway running perpendicular to the main runway so we can handle all wind directions.
Weather is going to be sunny, 79 degrees and 4 MPH directly down the runway.

I will make the trip if and when I ever get this Monster Ziroli Corsair started and finished. It will be at least 65 lbs. So I know I'll meet the minimum at Franks event. I watch all his videos that I am able to get my hands on. He seems like a great guy. Until then I'll just stay within 300 miles maybe 400. I like Sam like to make it in one day and not push it to do it either. But you guy's all have a blast at Franks event. Maybe I'll see you on the video.

169th giant scale flyin.
This third "road' trip was only 15 miles as it was at my club.
A real nice flying day with the bulk of the planes being scale models.
I had planned to get flights on all my warbirds but after loosing the Ziroli B-25 on the second flight: it put a damper on my flying.
The first flight went well but the second flight ended after the right engine died just after take off.
I didn't realize that the engine was on idle until she was heading toward the trees so I tried to go over them.
I managed to get over them but then lost sight of the plane and she went down.
At the field, I tried to analyze why the right engine ran fine on the first flight but not the second.
After I got home, I realized that I was focusing on the wrong problem: The real problem was me ignoring the symptoms.
Last week, the right engine didn't get up to 7100 rpms and I had to adjust the high end plus it took about 30 seconds to reach max rpms.
The same thing happened today. On that first change in rpm's, I should have shut the engines down and taken the engine apart for analysis.
I replaced both engines just this week on the Ziroli C-45 due to power loss plus send in the two 3W-75's to get them to run properly on the Yellow Texan and P-47. I'm not sure why I ignored what the B-25 engine was trying to tell me as I usually won't fly if everything is not mechanically perfect (especially twins).
With 300 flights on twins, Ishould know better than doing something that dumb.

Here's a few pictures plus some videos.

Default RE: ROAD TRIPS: 2009

June 27 road trip (4th)
Blacksheep squadron in Danville, Indiana.
140 miles.

I left at 3:40 AM this morning to get to this warbird flyin.
Another 90 degree day.

They have a nice 650' all grass runway with a nice tree'ed pit area and a real nice clubhouse with electricity.
This club is like the one in the last AMA mag in Washington: the 'waste management' company needed their old site so the 'company' built them a new one at a new location.

The club is real friendly as they acted like they knew me for the last 20 years but had not seen me in the last year.
We had good food and some good pilots prizes but, as usual, I didn't win any planes.
They did like seeing my Ziroli aluminum covered P-47 and blue/white C-45 fly as they gave me the "pilot's choice" as well as "people's choice" awards.

The two new G-38's in the C-45 worked perfectly.
I put a 4 blade prop on the P-47 but she needs a little more needle adjustment as she ran rich in the air.
I'll be taking off the drop tanks on the next flight as well as leaning out the H end to get some more speed out of her.
On a sunny day, the aluminum was pretty easy to see.
On the back turn, the sun reflected off the wing and on the opposite turn, the shinny wing was easy to see.

ps: the Ziroli F4U and PT-17 both had, respectively, 3 and 5 cylinder saito radials in them and they sounded great in air.

Default RE: ROAD TRIPS: 2009

July 4 roadtrip (5th)
To TORCS (top of Ohio radio control squadron) near Quincy, Ohio.
76 miles.

Only took about 1 1/5 hours to get to this giant scale flyin.

pic 1:
About half the trip was via state routes.
A lot of the old state routes are very straight and wide with a 55 MPH speed limit but the time goes by quickly while viewing 'americana'.

pic 2:
Not often that an ultra lite lands on your runway.

pic 3/4:
The runway is a private full size runway that the owner allows the club to fly at.
The runway is 1000' and has been there for 40 years to it is very smooth and the grass is very short.

pic 5:
The club house and a few of the planes.
About 30 planes showed up.
I had a good time with my buddy Doug Miller and we flew together with his P-47.
There was a rare mid-air of two stunt planes but both planes landed safely: the prop on one chewed the wing tip on the other but no significant damage.

pic 6:
One of the owner's full size planes.
As usual the food was good and I had a good time meeting some new friends as well as seeing some old ones from TORKS (Columbus, Ohio).
It's been a pleasure flying my C-45 and aluminum P-47 at these flyins as the aluminum really generates a lot of questions and it seems like 'everyone' enjoys watching the C-45 fly.
Unfortunately, I keep forgetting to get someone to take some videos of them in the air!

========
the next road trip is to warbirds over delaware:
I plan on leaving early Tuesday and won't be back until late Sunday (this should be fun!)

July 7-12 (6th trip).
To Warbirds over Delaware.
580 miles
Took about 10 hours (non stop).

pic 1:
the whole trip (save several miles) was all inter-state highway.
Fortunately, my truck holds 34 gallons so I could go non-stop.

The event was fantastic with 173 pilots and it looked like about 500 planes were there.
Starting on Wednesday, flying got started out light and by Saturday, 5-6 warbirds were in the air from 9-5.
Pete and Dave did a great job of organizing the event.
Weather was perfect all week and Saturday night, we finished up with a pork pull dinner with all the trimmings.

Carl Bachhuber brought his B-36 and stratoliner.
Paul Letourneau 160" B-25 and 10-11' skyraider.

About a 12' Jenny and a P-40.
My C-45 and P-47: Since Greg Hahn brought his top gun C-45, we got to do some formation flying. We tried to talk Matt Chapman to join us with his C-45 but he already had it dis-assembled.
A Ziroli Stuka and a 3 cylinder P-51.
Also a twin cylinder P-51.

I think there were about 3 large B-17's at the field.
This is Manny's 120" P-47 which, I believe, may be the largest P-47 flying in the states.
However, Scott Prossen says he has six 140" P-47's being built for the Monster flyin in Florida.
Darrell (Sierra Giant) brought the retracts to the show and I believe the struts were 1 1/8" in diameter.

An enlarged (about 10') AT-6 with a 250 moki radial.
Two or three Ziroli B-25 also at the show.

The runway is about 900' long, all grass.
A large tent was set up for overnight plane storage.
It started getting real crowded on Friday as the entire in-field filled up with pilots/planes.
This skyraider had a functioning canopy.
About a 10' spit.
A ziroli panther with a glow engine (Mark engine) in the nose.
