Hi Gary, Congrat's on taking 2nd place at Toledo. I was on line at 2:30am after taking the dog out. I've got the canopy and cowel the next step is to get the FG fuselage. I'm looking forward to the build. John T.

BtW, this is funny. We were wheeling Zombie in on Friday, and I heard some guys talking and one said 'look at that, a P-47 with fixed gear, why not'. We got a kick out of that.

Gear update. We smoked a gear door servo at Toledo and this has taught us that one needs to use at least a mid range digital servo on them. They will be more durable. We have replaced the inexpensive Hitec digitals with the better DS5645s. While attempting to reprogram the system, we ran into problems. She wouldn't take. After some diagnostics by isolating the system, we found that we had a bad servo on the air valve for the tail gear. It was sending some feedback apparently. After replacing it with a new DS821, we had no issues with the programer. All is functioning perfectly again.
Down & Locked is working on producing servo extensions with filters in them to prevent this from being an issue in the future. They already have a level of protection on the circuit board, but the filter on the extensions will provide another level of protection against even the dirtiest of servos, till it can be replaced.
I'll have a new video of the whole thing this week some time.

Here is something I saw at Toledo and thought it was inventive. The SNJ5 that won first place had electric gear improvised by the builder. He used the gear train and motor from 1/4 scale servo, yoked to a homemade jack screw with a coupler. He had also made his own gear from scratch. Very impressive.

Somebody has to be first to try it, right.
I think it is time JR and Futaba had some real domestic competition. They are, unfortunately by necessity, using some Chinese components, but all the programing and really technical design is proprietary and will be kept in house. They ARE NOT just sending there stuff over to China to be manufactured, and copied.
I really hope this is all it appears to be, from what I have seen so far. I talked extensively with these guys at Toledo, and I was impressed with their understanding of the technology. Of coarse, on this subject, it doesn't take long before you have lost me in the techno lingo.
They are already working on what may well be the next generation of signal delivery (better than 2.4). Really pioneering stuff. Really exciting.

I hear ya, but theres no way I am ever using anything but JR equipment. Let me know how that works for ya. You going to test it on the Meister P-47?

Let me say, I have been a JR guy for a couple decades now, and no way am disappointed in the product. Their systems and servos have been the mainstay of what I do in RC. Their servos are top shelf as far as I'm concerned. I'll continue to use them.
But I am not convinced that more money always means more FOR you money. These guys are convinced they can deliver more flexible and better computer control, at a better value, and do it right here in the USA. I have to give them a try.

You building the Tiano/Prossen/Omeara/Deweese P-47?
Hope to unveil it, at Monster Planes 2012, and then finish and compete with it at Toledo 2013, and hopefully Top Gun the same year.
In the meantime, we have been contracted to build an F4U Corsair for competition next year. Brian and I will build it, with all the attention to detail as if it was our own, and I will be the chief pilot for competition in 2012 (you should see what is left of the last Corsair Brian tried to fly, and he built the thing).
We might have it at Monster planes this year, but it won't be done.
A build thread will be started with in the next few days.
We began another Corsair, but I already have it sold and we are flipping into this one, as it will be a better build to compete with, and all expenses are covered, so we can better put our own resources toward the 144" P-47.
We plan to get Brian checked out in Zombie by then.

Start cracking on the wood...lol You have lots of work ahead from what it sounds like.

And then when you build so big, it means even more detail that is visible, so it may be only 40% done at that point.

BTW, I think we figured out a way to shave some precious weight off that 144" wing. Funny, with the Meister P-47, you worry very little about weight, other than to keep her as light in the tail as possible. Not so when you build bigger. The all up weight becomes a real issue, and each component is evaluated for weight vs strength, more like full scale. Fun stuff.

I agree with you bud, if it's made in the USA, why not give it a try..
Congrats at Toledo, had to be one hell of a plane to beat yours... So how big is this corsair your gonna be starting, looking forward to the build thread..

Here is a look from inverted.
Interesting to note is the change in lateral balance that occurs as they come down. You can see how the plane rolls to the right as the gear comes down. This, plus the aerodynamic drag differential due to the stagger is commented on by the full scale pilots of the jug. My hope with the model version is that the extra drag and weight on the right wing will actually help with the left yaw as I go for the gear switch on the left side of my radio.
