Hey guys,

I have the Moki 250 with the APS fuel pump in my CARF P47. What are you guys doing to winterize the motor. It is starting to get cold here. Thanks for the input.

If anything i would just take and put some after-run oil thru the intake valves and turn it over a few times to help distribute it thru the motor. That should help to resist any rust from forming in the bearings and the cylinder walls.

Question please,

Has anyone experience with the Zimmerman 2 into 1 exhaust ??? It appears that once the elbows are locked in place to the exit tube that it would be difficult to remove unless the welds are broken. It's advertised to give the Moki a more Harley like sound.

Thanks - Jaketab

To Mark and everyone. A very good thing to do to "winterize" and every 30 flights is to do a valve clean with brake cleaner. Black carboney build-up occurs on the valve stems especially the exhaust. What to do....The spray brake cleaner with the straw is aimed directly at the valve spring. The straw is placed in the area beside the rear portion of the rocker angled toward the spring. Spray and you wont believe the amount of black guck coming out. Wait a minute or two and hit it again and yep a ton more guck will come out. If you have an air hose, blow the remainder of the brake cleaner out and VERY IMPORTANT immediately oil everything because the brake cleaner removes all traces of lubricant. The hidden valve stems are especially difficult to oil so use a spray lubricant the foams up thus insuring the stem gets it. This will also insure the valves wont stick either. No one likes to loose pushrods!!! -Tom

Tom,

I use this. Good results freeing up stuck valves.
Lubricates as it cleans.

I also use Seafoam in all of my Mokis and never lost a pushrod in four years. Jaketab I used the Zimmerman two into one exhaust on my moki 250 on the Jungmeister. I would suggest using Silver solder on the pieces when it is installed, otherwise you`ll never get it on the engine. Rick

Rick,

On the Zimmerman exhaust - when you soldered the tubes together, will the exhaust unit slide on and off the collector ring in event the engine needs service or repair ???
Did you solder the unit to the collector ring permanently ???
Does the center tube need additional support or bracing ???
The way the end tubes bend greater then 90 degrees, it appears it may be a permanent installation.

Thanks - Jaketab

When you solder the exhaust together it is on the exhaust ring permanently you can not take it off.

Question - Has anyone used standard plumbing 3/4" copper tubing for exhaust stacks on the 250 ???
Good or bad results ????
The pipe nicely fits around the exit stacks.

Thanks - Jaketab

I use the corrugated stainless tubing made for natural gas hookups. Bends are possible with the stuff. Looks cool too! Mitch

Hi Jaketab,

yes I did see below so far worked fine I did some test runs only, hasn't been flown yet but I believe it will stand up as it is silver soldered and the exhaust stack temp was only ~150degC. I used high temp engine paint to paint it and also some exhaust sealant.

Jaketab, I use heater hose that is pre-bent. When you go the auto parts store they have all kinds of funny shaped pre formed hose in different diameters. If you ask they will usually let you go back and study them. The weigh almost nothing, the exhaust temps do not bother them at all. You do not even need clamps!!! When you want to remove a cowl you can just pull them off. Another upside is they, being rubber, actually quiet the engine down...or is that bad? Been using them for years. -Tom

Mitch,
Went to Lowes. The corrugated tubing for water tank gas line was to small diameter. Possibly I was not looking at the right tubing.

Tom,
The heater hose sounds like a great idea. I was afraid the heat would melt it.
If I had my way, the Moki could stand a bit more rumble.

Primi,

That's exactly what I had in mind. I can use the added weight. Will make some thin cuts in the copper where it clamps on to the exhaust stack so it will clamp tightly.
Permatex Ultra Copper should help seal it and keep it removable.
I'll include a picture when I get the cowl back off.

Thanks - Jaketab

This is what I had in mind for the exhaust. It may or may not need a hanger for support?

Hi Jaketab, The gas tubing I found was perhaps for a stove installation. The ID was just the right size for a push fit. A hose clamp won't work unless you slit it where the clamp needs to be. I drilled a 1/16th hole directly through the tubing and the exhaust pipe and out the other side. Stainless steel safety wire prevents it from sliding around and a clamp screwed to the firewall maintains whatever angle needs to be made for the exhaust exit. Mitch

I used the copper elbows on my 150 and just held them on with 4-40 bolts right through both elbow and collector ring and used nuts and then nylon locknuts to kep them in place. High heat paint blackened them down so not noticeable.

On first go around, I used a worm clamp to hold tubes on the collector ring. It deformed the outlets.
They will distort with little uneven pressure.
The pictured type of clamp worked better and kept from distorting the outlets.

How do you have the smoke set up? I have a basic smoke nipple on mine, but it doesn't seem to produce smoke as nice as yours.

I use the 2-into-1 setup on mine... don't really notice the sound being any different than any other Moki. I tried forever to silver solder the pieces together, but I either don't know what I'm doing, or I used the wrong sliver solder, so I gave up and JB-Welded them together... works great. You can get the pipes off, just break the JB-weld, then slide them off of one side, pretty easy actually. I do like the finished pipe sticking out of the cowl instead of a piece of flex pipe.

Hi All,

Does the Moki have needle bearings on the connecting rods where they fit on to the crank? or just bushings?

Marty
