I use smoke port on the exhaust collector ring and a powerbox smoke pump. I do notice it puts out more smoke on one side of the exhaust than the other.

Here is mine, ...perfect 250 Moki. 100+ flights, running on turbulator, APS fuel pump, 34/16 SEP perfo prop @ 4500rpm (in this video, SEP 32/16 @ 4900 rpm)

Benoit, Superb flying and stunning plane! Very elegant maneuvers. When viewing Youtube another gentleman had a 60% with a Moki 400. No music!
Many years ago I had a Jungmeister with a Zenoah G-38. That plane flew so well. I would have a radial in it now of course! I saw you are using a SEP 34x16 on your 250. I now use a SEP 33x16 on both my (turbulated and pumped) 215's Very happy with this prop and very well balanced. -Tom

Hi guys

i have a very old first run moki 215... Been in the box since I got it in about 1999...
i am wondering what I need to do with this engine to make it a reliable running engine....


I am am sure it has the brass gears.... Can those be replaced??? Should I run it for a while and then have them replaced or get it done before I even start it...
what about the ign mod??? Should I change it to the new version???

It is going into an amr 33% Waco....

I also have have read the early mokis were hard to start.... Why was that??? Can I do anything to improve the starting???


if I do change out gears or need service who should I send it too????

Bill, I do not know the longevity of the brass gears but I bet Mick knows. If they are good for 200 flights, use them! Yes they can be replaced. I personally would inject additional grease into the cam area. Mist the interior of the engine through the carb with very light oil. Use 4 cells on the ignition (4.8v). Some of the difficult starting may have been technique but I could be wrong. Vogelsangaeroscale.com is where to send it if there is a problem. -Tom

Hi Bill, the brass gears will do a turn??sorry for that. The were though replaced free of charge. More importantly I would replace the cam followers if they are the variety with the ball end, I would also be enclined to inject a table spoon of 80 grade gear oil to the cam housing.

As to the starting difficulties, I had that with my early one also of its first 20 flights it returned 18 dead stick landings! These problems were completely cured with a fuel pump.

just so I understand your saying the brass gears arnt going to last more than one turn...
i doubt 15 years later it will be free to change them but sounds like it is a must..
Are fuel pumps standard issue with all the mokis now???
i need to look at the engine but I do think it has the ball ends for the cam followers...
that would be where the pushrods fit onto the engine right...

just want to make sure it's worth upgrading before spending money on it..... Meaning I hope I can get the same good performance of the current engines after replacing these parts and adding pump...

Hi Bill, do a turn is a figure of speech, they will last a few hours but the other items need attention. The fuel pump will be useful for which ever Moki you run. The gears were a factory replacement then so should be now, put pressure on Vogelsang. Don't ditch that motor they are still very good. IMO better than a certain Indian product!

I can't find any dimensions on the 180. Does anyone know the diameter? Is it the same by chance as the 150? I know the 150 fits in the Meister P-47 and curious to know if the 180 would fit as well.

I think the 150 and 180 are identical, just a larger cylinder bore on the 180.
