Not silver, ALUMINUM. It has a different look to it. Just go get a $1.39 bottle of paint and try it out on a scrap or two first before you get all worried up on step 8, 9 and 10 of your detailing.

Flat clear is your friend.
I believe that flat also helps make the model appear worn, dingy, unwaxed, ect.

I always find small scale models to help me weather my waybirds.

I looked at these when i weathered my Zero at the time........Only lightly weathered mine :

you know when you look at the Zero and the Dauntless its as if someone shared the plans ???
change the paint and a few small elements and the planes look the same , I use to think the AT-6 looked like a Dauntless , now I think the zero us the copy !!!!

I have created a convincing exhaust streak on a few of my planes using an air brush and three colours.
I work on heavy vehicles and have seen/observed the way the exhausts stain/burn painted surfaces, so the first colour
I lay down is a thinned out grey & this is quite a large streak and shaped as per the pics of the real thing in relation to wind flow effect.
2nd colour is again a very thinned out tan this covers most of the grey but should leave a little grey at the edges.
3rd of course is the thinned matt black which will be the thinnest streak again in the shape created by wind flow.
The Grey is the paint that has been heated by exhaust gasses & lost its colour the Tan is where its burnt the paint
& the black is the residue from the exhaust.
Cordite stains from the guns are easy with the air brush as well, but theres nothing like a good exhaust stain to make your war bird look used.
Zero's looking great 322.
steff.

MMM... I think the SBD Dauntless is more unique. The AT-6 looks KIND OF like a fat Zero on steroids. Probably why the movie zekes are believable as modified AT-6s. The AT-6s inherently look more like an Aichi Val really in my opinon.

Evolution???

Zeke-> Slim, trim and sleek like a cat

AT-6-> A big, old, fat tomcat

SBD Dauntless->That same big, old, fat tomcat that morphed into a Rottweiler[>:]

PSJD thanks for the kind words I appreciate the how to tip on the exhaust, don't own a air brush not that I'm against buying one but could the same effect be had with spray cans ? I've gotten allot of inspiration from all of you guys , just can't seem to work up enough nerve to get started, LOL the weathering of the panel lines looks really cool this is accomplished with a gray charcol pencil ?

Id get a black one first. You can get into the greys later after you get the hang of it.

Try a little here and there. If you don't like it or think its too much, you most likely can rub most of it off and start over.

nothing, maybe some grey. You will mainly use your aluminum color paint technique on the cowling

Dark brown and tan and a rust color. These work well for dirt smudges you can also blend 2 or 3 different colors for some nice effects. This post is probably to late.

hey buddy , model masters sells a premixed small bottle of exhaust buffing meralizer its very easy to use in a small spray gun and the reason why I like it is that it difficult to make it heavy or too over done .
Test it on paper and you will see how light it goes on .
They (model master ) have some great premixed ready for sparying colors that work great for weathering , they have rust , and so many more
