XP-67 Moonbat
My latest build is a 1/6 scale model of the McDonnell XP-67 Moonbat. This scales out to a 110" ws. Power will be 2 Turnigy C6364-230 electrics on 9s lipo's. with 100A esc's. Up to this point I have the tail feathers framed, and am working on the body formers. I have it them all set up except for the forward nacells. The plans show these as round secitons, when the photos clearly show the sides with flat facets. Going to be a little trial and error on those.

RE: XP-67 Moonbat
On with the building. This project is shaping up to one of trial and error: My trial due to plan errors! 1st correction is to the forward nacells which are not round in section per the plans, but have flat plate areas. After studying my references, I cut/sanded facets to the forward formers, and added 3/16" sheet. That wasn't too hard. The next problem area is the rear of the blended body between the nacells and fuse. The problem arises due to the use of a ~18% Clark Y airfoil on the plans vs. a Laminar section on the real deal. This forces the trailing edge to drop significantly in this area, when what is needed is a straight line from wing-tip to fuse. So before hacking up the the body section, I'm going get the wing framed so I have a reference line to work to. I'll subsititue a semi-symetrical section of reduced thickness for the Clark Y. This will produce the look I need without worrying about reproducing the exact airfoil of the prototype.

when using the stacked method of making ribs the outer rib [tip] needs to be on the outside of the template not on the inside as it will be short.sorry for the bad news but if you think about it al the other ribs are on the outside of the root template.

Airwolf, I had to ponder what you were refering to for a minute. Not a problem, The root rib isn't in the stack, being of 1/4 ply, I didn't want to sand it with the balsa ribs due to the different hardness. It is in effect on the "outter" side of the root template, thus all the ribs are on the same "side" (inboard) of the templates.
Texan, Thanks for the pix. I have those and more. If you compare the 2 3-views you can spot a number of differences between them. As they say, no 2 3-views are alike. The Wylam nacell secitons are wrong, just as they are on the plans. Though to be fair, their was a major re-design to that area early on, but most the reference photos I have are for the later configuration, so that's what I'm modeling. From the attached picture of the prototype (sorry for a photo of a photo) you can see the trailing edge of the "wing" between the nacell and the fuse does not drop down as it would if I built per the plans.

Interested in this build. I think this was the fastest prop driven plane before it went to Jets.
I wanna see this one fly! Keep up the good work.

I hope to assert state aid.
Unfortunately this is a plane not very famous so it is also difficult to find decent photos that show him in all the poses.
some of you know in which museum is this plane?

Mattn, unfortunately the real plane never met its designed performance and its speed was below par at 405 MPH.

If you look carefully at the top right picture in your previous post you can see the results of the last in-flight fire to the aircraft. Pilot landed the plane successfully, but the fire damaged it beyond repair. Plane was scrapped.

RE: XP-67 Moonbat
ok Scalebirdman, but three copies were made ... What has happened to the other two? seems strange that the U.S. air force has not built one for the museum?

Getting going on the wing. Apologies for the lousy pictures just using a cheapo camera, and it doesn't work well in low light. I strung the ribs on the jig for a test fit. I'm going to need to do a little sanding on the ply root ribs to get everything trued up.
