hey guys. hope you all had a great christmas

in my holyday free time I completed the rear of the plane. elevator stabs on and molded elevator linkage all worked out and installed.. I also re did the rear hatch. the one in the kit was sickning, I scaled it down and used panel lines for the size. The elevator controls are all clothed and pinked and doped... now after I clean up some ofr the panel lines. she'll be ready for primer/sealer

Here is a trick to make the trailing edges of the flight surfaces before you put the elevators and such on. They are strong and glue well with CA thick if you sand them first. Then you just fill the crack with Evercoat and gives a scale look. You don't have to put them on the bottom which will then still give you access to the hinges if needed. These are available at Hobby Shops and Train Stores. It covers the gap between Stab/Vertical/ Wing and such and it comes in many sizes to choose from. I also have used G10 but this is easier.

youll need access to a tig welder.....because its chromoly, brazing just getts things to darn hot. i cut off the sissor mount off the lower part of the strut and tigged it in the correct location. on the real plane the sissors are outboard but the robart ones dont allow that.. so the easyest thing was to put them on the other side, as seen. the pic with the pen is where the original location of the sissor mount was. i also bent the strut where the wheel mounts to. so the wheels are 90 degrees from the ground and also allows for the gear doors to fit and look correct..

hope this helps?

Great job and your progress seems to be going really well, I was reading through and I very much like the idea of relocating the scissors, but I'm not to clear on why they couldn't be located in the scale position ? I would love to try this on a set of robarts myself . was there a snag you ran into that prevented this from being possible ?
thanks

the reasone behind not putting the scissors in the scale location is because the robart scissors are a little longer and the scirrors will hit the gear door

just a short update.. prepping the firewall area to beef it up.., meanwhile i'm going to relocate the top machine gun exit locations and make them appear more scale. also took the heat shield thinggybobbers off that they moulded in the fuse. im thinking about making it a M3 that will solve the exotic exhaust issue. M3 exhaust has 2 lower exits

Wow ! those are stickers ? pretty cool concept it had to be a pain sticking those on one by one , so you'll be painting over this with your finish coat of paint ? what color scheme have you decided on ?

actually they apply in long strips. many dozens go on at once. the plane is going to be this scheme im thinkin. i have some special aluminum paint that will mimick the raw finish. photos supplied show the bottom of the wing just about completed with all the rivets needed.. about a hour and 1/2 to do the enitre bottom

Who is the manufacturer of the rivet tape/stickers? Looks like something I'd be interested in for my Ziroli Corsair. Thanks...

thanks alot for the interest in this product.. rite now i have my panel line tape out for a test trial from a gentleman here on RCU. im hopeing that he will like what he gets and it helps him to achieve a completed, higher quality plane in a faster time. if all goes well with his feedback and would tell his friends and recomend it to them, then that would be great.. besides.... chart tape sux.. for a high quality paint job..

as for the rivets this zero will be the tell all. i was going to have my yellow p-40 be the test bed for my rivets however, I came across the paint scheme above and desided to test the panel line tape, rivets, and my aluminum surfacing all on one plane...I have to wait till monday to get the tape i need because only a automotive paint store will carry it..[&o]

the material the panel line tape and the rivets are made of isnt just cheep vinyl, but a high quality material and therefor also adds to the cost. so these two products wont be for the faint of heart or the budget build. but more twards the high end builder. like most of the scale junkies that show interest in the stuff i build and make

so hoppfully i will be able to fill a void that is in the scale junkies arsenal for being able to "make something look real" so please stay tuned. when the time comes i suppose ill make a new thread directed and deticated to those products. a place to post results and whatever.. ok guys. thats the heads up. did i answer all your questions guys?

is it a concern that the decal rivets would come off over time ? or perhaps not adhere properly ? is there a special prep that has to be done first ? and are these painted over or left as is ?

No not all of them , not yet , LOL thanks for the 411 so far

they are meant for the intent of painting over.. by painting over them that seals them on. my personal recomendation would be to apply the rivets after all the building is completed and ready to paint. the very last step befor you paint the plane, even after you spray that final sealer coat (if thats what you do) the reason is to maintain a nice sharp edge around the rivets (the least amount of paint buildup as possible. most guys do this anyways because they are weathering the plane as they go threw the paint prosses.I am also a person that personally likes to final sand the plane with 600 grit.. but there again im a auto body and painter by trade. so i used automotive paints and primers.

the rivets once applied on, you will need to pick it off and remove any glue residue. they stick on there pretty darn good. once there cleared over or painted over there on for good

and lastly,, thank you for the complements on the progress. much needed MoJo rubbs off when you all give the possitive comments [sm=teeth_smile.gif]
