***B-17 Gathering, Bomber Field, Tx 2009. RCU Onsite Coverage***
Hey there everybody at RCU. Today was the start of the 21st Annual B-17 Gathering at Bomber Field, Texas. The field is located in Monaville, Tx which is approximately 50 miles west of Houston. This event is advertised as a large Warbird event, however it wasn't limited to just Warbirds. There was a good share of other types of planes as well. The biggest common denominator at the event had to be flying (and having fun). Everybody was having a great time today.
As I pulled into Bomber Field my jaw almost hit the floor. This is one of the nicest facilities that I have seen this year. It's really a great place for flying planes, and the local club putting on the event really deserves a tip of the hat as they do an outstanding job putting the event on. If at all possible Iencourage everybody to get out the the event over the next two day as there is still plenty of great flying to be seen.
The one downsidehad to the be weather. While the rain held off for the day, the clouds did make a good show. The majority of the day was grey and overcast, and this put a small damper on the flying for some of the bigger planes. It also played heck with the cameras too!!!
Here are some pictures of the event today. I do want to make one note on one of the pictures. The picture of the P-40 upside down that appears to be in the grass is NOT.And it's not a crash. That is actually an inverted pass the pilot made. As you can see, he left grass stains on his rudder!!!! But the plane definitely DIDNOTcrash.
I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Nice pics! My dad and I rode our motorcycles 100 miles to Bomber Field this morning and spent the day in the pits helping a friend with his planes. The yellow/silver P-47 belongs to him and he will be excited to see the pic. Just got home and and am reflecting on what a neat day it was.

Well, I need to apologize to the group. I was hoping to have a video of Mac Hodges flight up last night, but unfortunately I ran into some technical difficulties. We have added a new HD camera for shooting video at these event, but I just got it last wednesday (the day before I left for the event) and having figured out all the details yet. So I was having a bit of a learning curve in preparing HD video for upload to YouTube and simply ran out of time last night. I think (knock on wood) I have it figured out now. I'll try to get that video up tonight after the day at the field.

It was another great day of flying today, even though a lot of people started hitting the road home early in the day. There were still lots of pilots on hand to get some great flying in.
But before Ipost pictures of today's flying I want to catch up with pictures from yesterday.Because of a small technical difficulty Ididn't get any uploaded yesterday. So let me catch up here a bit. And before anybody asks, yes the HDvideo of Mac's B-29 is done and is uploading as we speak. Although I'm on a slower hotel connection right now so I don't know how long it's going to take to get it uploaded.
You'll notice that some of these pictures aren't of airplanes, or action at the flying field. And you're right. Bomber field is also host to a RCTank group that has one of the largest battle areas on the grounds. Their battle field is 6,500 sq ft. of battle area constructed with urban, forest, desert, and other areas to combat in. It contains a running river, smoking bombed out houses, a working rail line, and more features that are too numerous to mention here. They were running battles all weekend long and several of the members invited me to come over and watch. Of course I had to take some pictures while I was there!!!

And here are the last of the pictures from today.
I'll post the video of Mac Hodges' B-29 when it's finished uploading.
Keep an eye on this thread, or the RCUmagazine for a full coverage write-up of this event.
