RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
For your first warbird... I wouldn't go spend 2 grand on an airplane... My number one suggestion would be a Hangar 9 Mustang... either the Miss America (which I fly) or the regular P51 Mustang, same thing just different schemes, but the Miss America looks awesome and it's pretty unique. These planes are good size for a first time warbird, and FLY AMAZING... my first flight with this plane (first warbird ever) was absolutely perfect, the only negative on these birds are there flimsy landing gear, but thats an easy fix

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
well for $1,800 you better damn well have a slide show that makes you all giddy inside.
Damn flying buddies, my 1st pick for WW2 Fighter would be the Stang, 2nd Corsair, 3rd hellcat, but all claimed by other club members (small club, we want to see lots of different planes amongst 4 members), so I am settling for the Jug!

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
I think you will get more satisfaction flying your P-51 than having a potential lawn ornament or HQ (hangar queen) that looks really nice & scale but weighs a ton!
the H9 or Top Flite arfs will do very nicely and fly very well.
An ex 104 pilot at our field has this saying " a man on a galloping horse at 10' away" will not see ...... what he means is that once the P51 is up in the air, no one at the field will see the rivets and panel lines but will most will remember a well flown P-51 demo flight.
Good luck!
ps one mustang in the air is worth two on the ground.
.
panel lines yes, rivets can you see them
.
how about the panel ines in this photo

Hi There!
Like so many others, it's my dream to own and fly a P-51 Mustang. I've finally decided to buy one but there are so many choices out there I don't know which one to get. My preference is for a scale, detailed kit or ARF that's as realistic looking as possible. Not being insanely hard to fly would be a plus too. Any ideas?
PS. I've stumbled upon a Nick Ziroli P-51 Mustang kit which uses a fiberglass fuse instead of cloth covered which would allow me to add more detail. Has anyone ever heard of this kit and if so what do you think the pluses and minuses are?
Thanks in advance!

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
Is that because he has better quality or because you reccomend I support North American products? Because Nick's kits are a lot more expensive than Hangar 9 or top-Flight.

I get that TF stands for Top Flight but what's the "I" stand for? And are both of those in the pictures Giant scale TF Mustangs?

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
Okay, now that I settled on a Hangar 9 or Top Flight Mustang, I just have a couple more questions. Can I change the design (covering) on the ARF Mustangs such as on the Hangar 9 or Top Flight ones (I'm a Chuck Yeager fan)? Can I change the retracts to better quality ones (someone mentioned the Hangar 9 Mustangs don't have good quality retracts)? And can I modify them so that the tail wheel retracts as well without messing up the way they fly?

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
I am modifying, and fiberglassing a Hangar 9 150 size so I can paint it just like Strega, a National Champion Air Racer. There's a post somewhere on here of my buddies he's building to look like Voodoo.

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
Bob Holman plans might have a Brian Taylor fuselage for the Mustang. I e-mailed him about it last summer and I think he said he had one then. It comes out at 69". IMP has one around 70 some odd inches, but as recall its kind of pricey for a wood kit IMO. I ended up getting an Aerotech.

Cyntec the "I" is "me" and yes they are all giant scale,85.5"[except the H9 P47].Engines in the mustangs are Moki/Mark 2.10 and the jug is Moki/Mark 1.80, robart retracts in the stangs and H9 retracts[electric/mechanical] in the jug.Tom

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
Cyntec- for a 65 inch mustang kit you could get the 60 size top flite mustang kit which builds to a 65 inch wingspan. this is basically the same plane as their arf 60 size mustang. If you get this kit don't buy the Robart 605 retracts that Top Flite recommends - in my opinion these retracts are worthless. this is because the plastic frame is weak and flexes. You can search other build threads to see what they used but if I was to build this kit I would buy the Spring Air 700 series retracts and buy 3/8 inch oleo struts to fit them. The Spring Air retracts are much stronger than the 605 series Robart retracts. (I think this is the Robart number but not sure).
