I think he is thinking about a B-17 theme this year too. I think we should try to get as many 4 engine planes in the air to try and beat the Bomber field record.

Remember, 2nd weekend of August in Owatonna, MN

Speedracer...

Sorry to hear about your loss. Sound of the motors never throttled back is never good while diving down.
I would have likes to see that one fly. Again, sorry.

Kirk
That is frickin' AWESOME!

And fast! I just sent Tim my 1/9 plans about 5 months ago.

In my book, he has always been "DA MAN."

Please pass on to him all the recent concern about the stab strength.

In his time of Great Loss, speedracer has been very generous with information and advice, esp. to those of us with 1/9's to fly.

Please let me know ASAP about any specific plans for a B-17 sideshow. Given the right confluence of circumstance and Alaskan fishing seasons and astrological signs, I could rustle up as many as 5 Iowan bomber pilots, who are, as you know, deadly serious about the science of 4-engine craft.

So NAMFI is for sure August 8,9,10, right?

Personally, I would have to suffer a MAJOR heart attack or long bone fracture to miss that event!

Kram,

Yes , NAMFI is the 2nd weekend of August, 8th, 9th, and 10th. But people will start to show up on Tuesday or Wednesday before... I live about 60 miles away.
I plan on camping out there, and flying my ultralight down there too. Parked way in the back, and not flying, or shutting down the flight line.
I will have mostly 1/3 scale WW1 planes there, with one Meister warbird.

I built my B17 from Jan Hermkens plans and I found the fiberglass upper deck at fiberglass that fit from fiberglass specialtys and also found the cowls to fit also..

UPDATE:

Early this summer, I started dusting off FRENESI and testing systems

Unfortunately, some tiny vibration-induced cracks appeared at the leading edge junctions with all nacelles

I didn't think much of it, but it bothered Frank a lot (esp in light of Speedracer's issues!), so we shut it down and he retrofit stronger plywood structure to the interior nacelles and rubber mounts to all engines. That was a SWEET piece of innovative engineering that only pushed the engines forward 3/16".

Recently, after an intense week of engine tuning, fuel re-plumbing and other minor mods, we go her back in the air. Here's some grainy video

MORE UPDATE:

Took FRENESI to NAMFI (Owatonna) got 5 nice flights out of her.

Many thanks to Frank the builder and Doug for all his encouragement (he brought his gorgeous WS-1/9 scale Shining Hour, to Owatonna, also) and to my friend Dave, the World's best spotter.

I like the way she handles: better than my 10 ft Westcraft, less pitch-sensitive with the flaps down

Good to hear Kram,
I was thinking all went well up at Owatonna since there were no whispers of carnage floating around the field this weekend

Because i 'm in love with this airplane, my next project will be another B17 but larger, at 1/7,5 scale...

Yeah, we were disappointed y'all didn't make it up

All the usual amazing old and new planes, but AMAZING weather. Temp 79 every day and wind blowing 5 mph right down the runway every day!

Cal had his finished 1/6 scale monster B-17 on display and actually ran the engines once, but has a lot more detail work before it's ready to fly

You have to stand by it to feel what a beast it is ! 162 lbs, so far

Sorry

Apparently my videographer (a perfectionist) was unhappy with the "aspect ratio," or somesuch detail, so he took the original down and re-posted it. Here is a link to the new one (same video)

No, sorry

Frank did a nice job on the pilots from Wingspan and a free-handed bomb sight, but I never found anything pre-fab

no I haven't found a cockpit for it. My bomber is built from Jan Hermkens plans it is my second one. Finding anything prefab has been difficult. Bit I did find bombs and a top deck and a tail cone and a ball turret. I do have 2 1.9 scale ball turret's To sell if anyone needs them although my plans say 1/9 scale and the wing span is 123" the 1/9 that wingspan models sells is too large
