RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
Well that build is in limbo right now, although it is framed up with the wing sheeted and retracts installed, no gear doors or control surfaces yet and no wing tips. the Fuse is formed up and completed less the canopy forward needs finished. The cowel is not installed yet. I have the engine bolted to test stand now in hopes of running soon. I hope to finish the Little Corsair and pick this build up i am getting excited about the P-51. but first things first lots to learn before the big brid..
thanks

Okay gents,
I'm finally back and put in some work this evening after dinner. I was able to get all the wheel well hinges glassed to reinforce them trying to prevent them from breaking. In the mean time I also cut out and fit my left and right wheel well walls, so I'm almost ready to start my final sanding in preperation for glass. Here are a few more pics of my progress.

Okay Gents,
Today I was able to continue working on my wing, doing some light sanding of both the outter wing panels and the inner wing. Well I got all my servo access panels glassed this morning, both aileron and flap access panels. Since both of my little girls are off at a friends house spending the night; I continued working on the landing gear covers and was able to trim and install both sides. Then using a pencil I traced out the fwd gear door and using my dremel tool with a small cutting wheel and cut out each fwd gear door. But of course I had to reinstall each hatch and place the gear doors over the gear to see how they look. Okay guy's here are some pics of my continueing work. I should be ready to glass the wing tomorrow.

Okay Gents,
Some more progress to report, I rolled out my .5 ounce fiberglass and cut out one long piece then I had to cut it in half length wise to cover the bottom and the top of my wing. As usual there are different ways to apply the resign I use West system epoxy #105 resign with #206 hardner witch is slow drying. Since I have the pump system, all I need to do is pump twice on the resign and pump twice for the harner for equal measurements. I take a small paint brush with extra fine bristles and apply the resign as thin as possible until the entire section is covered. Before the resign has time to cure I take a small bondo scrapper, cut done of course, and basically squeege the excess resign out and back into my resign cup. Right now I'm just waiting for the resign to cure but in the mean time I'll be cutting the excess fiberglass before I take a new exacto knife and trim the excess to the edge. Here are a few pics of my progress so far.

Well the saga continues with the bottom glassed it was time to glass the top of the wing. Since I already had the glass cut and waiting, I went ahead and pumped three shoots of resign and hardner mixed it and started by lightly applying resign to the wood, with the entire right side glassed I started on the left side and got it glassed. Well I have some more pictures of my work in-progress. This afternoon I completed the final step sealing each leading edge, wing tips, and trailing edges. By the way this is my first glass job ever!

RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
Okay, the glass job on my wings turned out awesome. Today I pretty much finished the rest of the wing by painting the wheel wells and installing the retracts. Then I turned around mounted the retract servo and air valve, with that complete it was time to install the retract/gear door sequencer and the matchbox that controlls the flaps. Once they were done it was time to run all the airlines and connect them in preperation for completion, then also made sure my tail retract actuator was ready also; I used two different QD's on the lines so I wouldn't get them confused. The final step today was to get my electrical switch mounted and the air system pressure indicator and the servicing valve mounted and then removed in preperation for primer. Well here are a few more pics of my progress so far, enjoy.

Looking good Bradley ...
Still not glassing yet here but i plan on getting to it straight away just a few more details to mock up before i begin glassing but all is good things are coming along well.
one question why are you using a matchbox for your flaps?

Tracey,
Thanks for the kind words. Normally with this build one would have the flap servo's mounted in the same direction. I took one of the servos and turned it 180 so each servo arm is opposit of each other, putting my actuating arms at the outer section of the inboard flap. Since I didn't have a reversing "Y" harness and I had the matchbox sitting around, read the direction and found out I could reverse one channel while running the other normally. I'm still running off of ch 6 with one lead from the receiver to the matchbox. The setup is working and didn't add but 1/3rd of an ounce of weight. Great question Tracey, if you have any more please feel free to ask.

I to am mounting servos like yours and I bought a reverse servo they cost the same as the normal one and no added weight. I understand not buying something if you allready have the matchbox..

Tracey, I have never herd of a reversed servo, where did you find it, Tower or Horizon? By the way spent the day working on my fuse getting it ready for paint. After using a total of nine ounces of gray primer the fuse is finally ready for paint. I'll be working on my wing this next week plus I need to order the correct tri-color scheme for my bird.

Chad,
no arguements from this side, but this is just a flying model. The bird I would love to build and put panel lines on for my first true scale look would be the TBF Avenger. Skyshark is reintroducing their Avenger kit and I would love to build it including tricking the bird out in detail.

I had a Skyshark Avenger kit that I sold a few years back, never built it. I still kick myself for getting rid of it! It is a really nice kit and just the right size. Go for it, you won't regret it.

RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
Bradley: Yes reversed servos are offered by several company's. I manage a small hobby shop, we cater to the surface side of RC but the owner and I both are avid flyer's. with that said the servos that I use most of the time are JR brand and we order them from Horizon Hobby. what I am using for the corsair is a JR 821R with the "R" for reverse and a JR821(normal) this will allow me to use a y harness and one channel for the both left and right flaps. I did it this way because both sides of the flaps you are driving 3 flaps with one servo and I did not like the control arm to be on the edge of the inner flap I wanted the arm to be more toward the middle flap as much as possible but still on the inner flap. does this make sense?
nothing wrong with sport scale IE no panel lines or rivets your Bird will be great looking either way from the looks of the fuse things are coming along nicely keep it going...

RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
Well After a few hours in the shop the wing is complete less final sanding and glassing. the flaps are fun to do but trust me by the time I finished it was getting old, although the results are worth it. and the tail is complete ready to sand and cover.
If all goes well and I get some more time in the shop the glassing is next. I have my fingers crossed that I don't screw this up after all this work. anyway here are the pictures from the cell phone last night...

Gents,
The work continues and I'm just about ready to start painting, just waiting on my new airbrush compressor to show up. So, in the mean time I have been working on the cowl, getting it mounted and cut to give my big OS 1.2 FS the room it needs inside the cowl. Here are a few more pics of my progress so far.
Hey Tracey, your corsair is looking great keep up the good work, just take your time when glassing. I found that the fuselage was the hardest, I started off glassing the tail section first ending just fwd of the verticle stab. Ask plenty of questions.

RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
well the glassing has started, some sanding and a final coat of the poly stuff to fill the weave completely and it's ready for some primer. The control surfaces and Fuse are sealed and they need sanding and then Glassing can start on them hopefully by Sunday I can have all glassing complete. It is coming along nicely, so far the glassing has been straight forward. Here are a few shots of the wing and stuff.

RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
Well I have finished the glassing and now I am on to the primer and filler and sanding and sanding and then sanding some more.
the glassing was no problem I think it took 10 hours total to get to this point. I did not use Epoxy rather I used the Water-based Polycrylic form Minwax it worked great I weighed before and after glassing and added close to 9oz total not bad.
here are some pictures.

Hi Tracey,
Looking very good my friend, so, what did you think about glassing for the first time? Now would you glass again or use monocoat? All in all a very nice job keep up the good work. Take a look at the Corsair tail retract I'm building for another RCU member.

RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
Thanks you Chad and Bradley you both have help me during this build.
Bradley as for finishing with fiberglass cloth over monokote, really no comparison. I have yet to see a monokote job turn out looking scale. glassing is the only way to go on a warbird, and probably any plane from my shop will be done using fiberglass. I feel as though I have more options as far as finish and color are concerned. monokote maybe less weight but you sacrifice more then the weight in appearance. Now the process I used is slightly different than using Epoxy resin, than in the use of Polycrylic. the steps are similar you still wet it out and then fill the weave although it takes more coats of the ploy, you have to realize that the water in the Poly will evaporate away and leave you with a very thin layer so more is required to fill the weave completely. no smell no mess to clean up with acetone, you just use warm water and towel and you can clean up any mess.
I can't wait to finish this bird but I am not looking forward to all the sanding and sanding and sanding oh did I say sanding
Love the tail wheel. I will have to make one of them for the Giant F4U-5 I would like to build someday but next is to complete the P-51
thanks again guys

Tracey,
From your accounts, you have a system that works for you, great job. The tail retract is coming along nicely, but, the guy I'm building it for hasn't responded to any e-mail I have sent him with updates about the retract. Maybe he's out on vacation and I'll get something in the near future, who knows. Keep up the good work and before you know it your Corsair will be complete.

Okay,
I'm finally done with the Corsait Tail retract I have been building for another RCU member. Here are the final pictues of my work.
Tonight I'm going to start outlining where I'm going to paint my Corsair, last week I received my airbrush compressor now I need to learn how to thin my paint before I start actually paint.

Bradley Nice work, wish I had one of them before I got this far on my build, that would have been sweet.
Well I to have been in the shop. I wish I could skip the sanding step it is for the birds. but the end is in sight and the excitement is building.
here are some shots from today. Oh and one of my shop buddy Max, he is now slightly red and dusty LOL...
