AT-6,
thanks for the info.

============

Outer wings (cont)

Flaps (cont)

Got the right flap installed!
Everything is, presently, dry fitted.
In order to get a 1/8" gap between the wing and bottom of the flap, the small extension on the pocket hinge that extends past the set screw was cut off (gets me an extra 1/16"). The flaps recesses were enlarged so the rotating pin part is located inside the LE of the flap.
Half circles were also made on the bottom of the flap at each hinge location to allow full flap deflection.

Flaps trimmed/sanded.

Pocket hinges dry fitted in the wing.

pic 3:
This dremel bit is perfect for making a nice rounded area for the pin hinges.

pic 4/5:
Flap servo assembly.
All heavy duty ball links with locking nuts to insure trouble free operation.
I don't anything 'popping off' on a 45 lb plane!
The ball link can be attached to the flap control horn with the flap in the down position.

About 45 degrees should be good.

Hate to waste space on your thread, but I have no doubt this will become the best thread for P-61 enthusiasts.

Once you fly BLACK you will never go back!!!

@ semplice........These digressions may seem unnecessary at you, but can offer lots of information and ideas to improve the model !..... a waste of space and time would be if someone ramble about environmental or cars issues that has nothing to do with this Thread. as instead Several other thread do!

Sam if you need more photos let me know,as I said are very equipped.

Default RE: ZIROLI P-61 BLACK WIDOW BUILD

David,
thanks for the comments.

Right now I have trouble scanning pictures as I wanted to post what looks like landing lights in the books that I have (my HP software is, presently, not recognizing my printer).
After looking through several books, I find no definitive location of the landing lights (save the nose wheel) on the wings.
I was surprised to not find any detailed plans of the plane in any of the new books.
I found one nice 'skinless' detailed drawing on page 70 of American fighters of world war II by David A. Anderson.
This drawing shows the nav lights on the very edge of the wing tips and on each rudder.
It shows one light on the nose wheel but none on the wings.
I found one picture on page 54 of Osprey's P-61 black widow book with a picture of the plane at night on the ground with a light on the nose wheel and one on the left wing.
Their other picture shows the bottom of the plane with two lights under each wing.
The lights are flush to the wing surface so I have to assume that they rotate on landing.
I'll have to duplicate my P-47 system and put rotating lights in the wing.
Putting a light on the nose shouldn't be hard to do.
I'll run the wires out to the outer wings for nav lights and install those after carving the balsa wing tip blocks.
Glad to find this 'stuff' out before top sheeting the wings!

Check Horizon hobbies and the G-62's won't be available until mid Jan (assuming no delays!).
To get the booms started, I'm going to have to remove my engine from my Nieuport 28 (something, I didn't want to do), since I can't count on a manufacturer meeting their expected delivery date.

I also tried to, again, up load the spoiler video with no luck so I sent an email to the 'video meister'.

AT-6,
Thanks for the detailed drawing:
None of my drawings showed the light.
Interesting that they say the light is like the P-47 which confirms my assumption that they rotate.
Well, at least I've got my P-47 setup to show me how to hook up the assembly on the P-61.
I'm thinking that I can just cut a new hole in the wing, make a ply cover and just mount the servo and rotating light on the cover.
As with my picture, the night scene only shows one landing light on the left wing but the drawing shows the lights on both wings: the plans reference is on the left wing so I'm assuming there is a rotating light on each wing. In the picture, the light on the right wing could have been burned out or the mechanism was not working properly.

Sam I am sure you would do more 'fast if I tried to see the photos posted in the previous pages and post links posted on this thread, I know that this is a waste of time in building the plane but you have information that up but to now had not considered! however this and fished out a photo on the previous page! as you can see the lights are arranged on only one wing, the other is not present!.

AT-6:
There's a conflict of pictures:
Osprey's P-61 black widow book on page 52 shows the bottom of the plane with, which appears to be two lights, one under each wing.
I think that I'll go with two lights: it's not much more work to build two versus one light at the same time and I can always dis-engage one light should I find out later that only one exists on the wings. Possibly different versions had different configurations. An example is that I don't see the nose landing gear light on all the pictures that I view.

AT-1,
Sounds like you still need a cockpit picture so see picture 1.
pic 1:

=================
Outer wings (cont)

Building rotating landing lights.
I used my Ziroli P-47 for a reference (hate re-inventing the 'wheel'!).
The entire assembly is mounted on some 3/32" thick ply which is also the hatch cover.
I used some small robart pin hinges and pocket hinge.
You need the pocket hinge in order to assemble/dis-assemble the rotating light mechanism since the light reflector is above the hatch cover and the rotating mechanism is below the hatch cover.
Some cheap small flash lights from the 'big-box' stores.
Some control horns made out of 1/8" thick ply that is 1/8" wide by 1/4" long and one hole drilled in one end for the control wire.
A couple small servos: I used HS-81 micro servos.
I cut some 3/4" ID and 1 1/16" OD circles from 1/16" thick ply which is the mounting plate for the light reflector. This also is the part that rests on the wing sheeting.
The reflector was epoxied to the mounting plate.
I used some #0X3/8 screws to hold the mounting plate to the pin hinge and also to the small ply control horn.
I then used a tooth pick to add some epoxy to this area to insure nothing comes loose.
Obviously, stuff this small needs pre-drilling before the screw can be used.
The pin hinge has most of one end cut off with about a 1/4" remaining that connects to the mounting plate.
The pocket hinge was epoxied to some soft balsa and then epoxied to the bottom of the hatch cover.
The servos were then arranged so that both operate in the same direction (one straddles the light and the other is to one side).
The servo variations are due to wanting to keep both lights the same distance from the wing tips resulting in 'mirror' images.
As you can see in the pictures, nothing fancy on the servo mounts as we are only trying to move a 1/2 oz object so no big forces are 'at play'.
From my 'estimates' at looking at the pictures, the lights should be right where the main spar is, so I moved them back (I'm more for the 'affect' than the 'scale', anyway).

pic 2:
P-47 reference.

pic 3:
cheap flashlights.

pic 4:
Parts needed.

pic 5:
Rotating mechanism.

pic 6-8:
Test via the transmitter (servo speed reduced to 2 seconds).
These servos will be Y'ed into the gear servo.
A contact switch will be on the opposite side of the gear servo arm to activate the lights in the 'down' position.
(Time to clean up that table mess, again!)
I soldered an old male extension lead and wires to the light so I can remove the entire assembly for any future maintenance.

pic 9:
Nav and landing light wire:
I get my 22 gauge stranded wire in red/black/green from radio shack as well as double AA battery holders.
I used my 'original' cordless drill, put the ends of two wires in a vise, the other ends in the drill and 'crank' until they are twisted together.
To differentiate the nav from the landing lights, I'll use red/green for nav and red/black for the landing lights.

Sam - lights look great!!

The one thing I have come to understand is there were always field modifications and then more field modifications. If you can think of it chances are some ground crew did also.

Two lights are going to look great.

I think this shot shows two lights on the bottom

David,
Ya' got that right.
Besides, I'm not going for 'top gun' stuff here: just a plane that I like to 'trick out' in my own interest.

Mike the pilot says he wants a light on each wing!
My books show a lot of pictures of the the bottom of the P-61 with what appears to be a light on each wing.

=====
Well, after re-re-loading windows again, I can finally get back 'online'.
I tried loading another firewall while another one was still up and it hosed up my windows software.
After re-loading windows several times without formatting the drive, I ran out of my 200 GB hard drive space: re-formatting took a long time but, hopefully, all is well again!
Fortunately, I keep another 200 GB drive for backup so most of my data was saved (at least since the last 'copy').

===========
Miscellaneous:

pic 2-4:
Rotating landing lights installed in outer wings.

video of testing the landing lights:
http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/P61-i...ing-light-test

pic 5:/6:
I used 1/4" diameter aluminum rod from home depot for the outer wing alignment pins.
As with the panther, I enlarged the holes on the outer wings so I could easily align the pins into the inner wing, some 1/4" thick ply and epoxied got the job done.

pic 7:
I wasn't sure if the bolts to hold the outer wings to the center wing are on the top or bottom so I epoxied hard maple to both sides and worry, later, about which side gets the bolts.
I pre-drilled holes for #6 bolts in the hard maple and then punched a hole in the bottom sheeting so I know where they are.

pic 8:
3/32" thick balsa glued to LE of the ailerons.

pic 9:
3/8"X1/2" thick balsa beams epoxied across the ribs and 1/8" thick ply mount epoxied in for the two servos for the flaps on the inner wing.
This gives me 10 servos just in the wing, I'll probably end up with over 20 servos in this plane as I like operating canopies, cowl flaps and servo operated chokes, not counting two for elevator and rudder, plus retracts and brakes!
A hole was needed in the 1/8" thick TE of the inner wing for the flap control rods so I drilled out four holes in each corner of the hole and then used the xacto saw blade to remove the rest of the waste.

Inner wing (cont)

Flaps (cont)

I installed the pin hinge balsa hard points in the wing and flaps along with the 1/8" thick ply control horns. The hinge pockets were drilled out on the wing and the holes drilled for the large pin hinges on the flaps. These are short flaps so only two hinges per flap.
The top sheeting was glued on as with the outer flaps: 3/32" thick balsa with 1/16" thick balsa for the curved LE.
Hitec HS-645's used and all dubro heavy duty ball joints with locking nuts on the 4X40 control rod.

pic 1:
Inner wing flap hard points glued in: there was epoxy in this area around the wings ply TE so I also epoxied the hard points to the wing.

pic 2:
The hard points and control horns for the flaps were all glued with carpenters glue.
I added extra support to the control horn by sandwiching the control horn with some soft balsa blocks.

pic 3:
Top sheeting glued on and sanded.

pic 4/5:
flaps dry fitted assembly.

pic 7:
About 45 degree deflection.

Sam, your speed of build is amazing!

I've become addicted to my subscription, like my Grandma was to her daily soaps.

I dread the day you tire if it or have to go build cabinets, or something.

Keep it up!

Kram,
Thanks for the comments but I'm not doing anything that the next guy couldn't do.

====================

More miscellaneous stuff

pic 1/2:
Lite ply epoxied to inside edges of inner flap servo cover hatches and #2 screws used to hold the covers on the wing.

pic 3:
Some triangular stock glued along the TE of the inner wing just above the flaps.
This stock support the top sheeting that 'over hangs' the flaps.

pic 4:
Recess cut in TE of inner wing for the booms.

pic 5:
Right aileron hard points glued in using soft balsa stock.

pic 6:
This 3/32" thick sheeting was just a little too short to go 'length wise' to cover the aileron but it fits perfectly at a diagonal.

pic 7:
The two pieces left over from the diagonal cut will be glued together to fit the other aileron.

pic 8:
Right aileron top sheeting glued and clamped using paint sticks.

pic 9:
Left aileron hard points glued in.

pic 10:
Left aileron top sheeting applied: carpenters glue used on hard points and sheeting.

Outer wings (cont)

pic 1:
Ailerons top sheeting trimmed and sanded.

pic 2:
I'm custom cutting the top sheeting around the spoilers and TE of the wing.
The first piece goes from the spoiler to the flap overhang.
The second piece went from the center of the spoiler LE support to the flap overhang.
The top sheeting overhangs the flap by 3/8" so I decided to CA some 1/64" thick X 5/8" wide ply to the top of the sheeting to give it strength, rigidity, and prevent hanger rash. I put the ply on top as the bottom balsa has to be sanded to a taper. There will be a line at the edge of the ply on the sheeting but it should just look like a panel line.
I CA'ed the two pieces of balsa to the 1/64" thick ply on a level surface to insure a straight line.

pic 3:
The next two pieces of top sheeting need to be added now to insure I get the ailerons aligned with the wing.
The third, narrow piece is between the spoiler and TE of the wing in front of the aileron.
The forth piece goes from the TE of the wing to the center of the main spar.
I put the wing, and weighted it, on the 3/8" square shim to insure the wing keeps the 'washout'.

Dubro heavy duty hinges replacing the individual pins with one long piano wire.
Hinge line is 1/8" from the top surface and angled about 20 degrees down (into the TE of the wing and LE of the aileron) to get the pin as close to the surface as possible.

Well well, I know you said you were going to increase aileron control, but now that I can see the working operation that is significant.

With the spoileron support this thing will fly like an extra or edge!!

P.S. Had to turn on the AC in Arizona today.
