You know I follow you guys. Taping the window panels off in order to paint the framework from the inside sounds smart but tedious as you said. After the bay doors, I think I may be able to take on anything. Thinking of mounting my switches/air fillers inside the fuse starboard door. Thinking. Thanks. Chic

The fuselage is not square so your rails look out of line. Don't worry about.

Okay guys,
Got the rails cut into the cockpit sills, and was going to work on the engine mount before going back to the canopy frame. Lo and behold no 1/4" ply anywhere to be found in the workshop so I will have to pick up some on my way back from work.
I did notice that the balsa for the rear of the cockpit isn't wide enough so I will have to add some sheeting to both sides before I rough cut the shape.

As a matter of fact they used rubber bands to power the propeller at one time. Larry, you may be on to something.

I use the rubber bands to hold the balsa sheeting while it dries to conform to shape, works great.
So here is a pix of the rough cut canopy and hood, but alas I am totally confused.
I just pulled the clear canopy from the box and notice it only goes as far as front to aft of the canopy, no piece for the front windshield, am I missing something?????
Slow going as I am now semi gainfully employed but trying to get an hour+ a day in, that would be 1/2 hour trying to remember what's next and 1/2 hour plus doing the work
Going to get the last pieces of the fuse sheeting done today so I can test fit the cowl.
Boyd, does the cowl fit over the front of the hood or do they just meet???
Also it looks like the canopy frames are about 1/2" am I seeing this right or are they larger???

There is no front windscreen (canopy). You'll have to make it. Surprise. I would have thought that it would have come with it.

The cowl mounts flush with the front hood. It does not fit over the hood.

Excellent news, just make sure your first stop is for STEAK.
Glad I can help with the SS, but I have to tell you that getting up at 4AM again is a real PITA, thankfully not too many days of that each cycle.
Will let you know when I start making the plug for the windshield, can't friggin believe I have to do this

Thanks for the info, just what I wanted to hear.
What thickness clear did you use for the windshield, I found some .005 and some .010 material cheap
2 more pieces to do on the fuselage and make the 2 hatches for the elevator horn access and then will make the hatches for the switches and air fill.
Have to pick up a scroll saw now that I'm working again so I can cut the formers for the canopy and get that part done

Go to Vanguard Plans. They have the same scale T-28 with all the canopy parts.

Again thanks for the info, am ordering the canopy this week now that I got my 1st paycheck.
So I almost have the fuse sheeted but another gremlin showed up yesterday,
When I checked the cowl to F1 lo and behold it looks like the cowl is an 1/8" smaller than F1, I know you cut a new F1 when you installed your gasser but I can't for the life of me figure it out. I'm thinking of attaching the mounting blocks and see if the cowl fits or if it's me.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Chic, want you to know that refilling your SS is cutting into my hobby time, working 8 out if the next 14 days with 3 of them starting at 5:30AM but hey whatever I can do for you,,,, LOL

I had the same problem. I cut slits in the back of the cowl to open it up, then glassed it back together. You can see them from the pix. They appear to be black lines. Cut as much as you need to open it up. As a matter of fact I was never impressed with the fit of the canopy or cowl.

Larry with your keen eyes, how could you miss that "Pink" steering wheel on the new tug that I cannibalized from a Barbie car I purchased for $6 from the local Salvation Army store. Shirley was sure you would not miss that since you didn't miss those "Mouse" shoes. Smile. Chic

You'd think a guy with Platt's reputation would have corrected such issues before offering the parts to customers. Or at the very least give folks a fair warning of the problem before they purchase. At least with some advance notice you could probably rework the front end a bit during construction to allow the cowl to fit properly rather than finding the issue after everything is built!

You are right. I would have cut the parts differently had I had known about the problems. Especially the canopy which was way off.

You would have thought but I will pass along something from a novice builder who also bought his T28, he called Dave and asked him a couple of questions and Dave's response was to pack everything back in the box since it was obviously beyond his skill level. Trust me if not for Boyd I probably would have come close to doing the same thing.
But luckily building the Avenger taught myself and my friend a lot about zigging and zagging through a build. Are you going to the scale masters in March?

I don't know Platt personally but I have heard other similar stories about his lack of social graces. Having said that, he was quite friendly the two or three times I have interacted with him. Ah well, neither here nor there I suppose. I will be attending the Masters qualifier later this month but I have not decided for sure in what capacity exactly. I need to do a bit of work on my red Hellcat if I want to fly in Expert. Or I may just bring the yellow Hellcat and fly in Pro-Am. Or I may just come and spectate, not really sure yet. I will look forward to seeing you there at any rate!
