Nice cockpit, Ty.
Update on my Hurricane. With everything installed and lots of nose weight, it weighs 17 pounds exactly.
That's with a Saito 180 and almost 3 pounds of lead!

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as well, as I have been thinking of getting one also...but I think I might go electric if I do get one!

Mine flies great on e-power. You also don't have to cut holes in the cowl. You do have to add a little weight in the nose unless you want to cut a hold through the firewall. I think I had to add about 1.25 lbs. to mine.

RE: ESM 82
I was working on the mounts for the Sierra Giant Scale gear in the ESM Hurricane. It is not going to be too bad. The rear plywood mount needs to change and I have to figure out a way to patch back in the sheeting I removed without causing too much trouble. It is interesting to see how much of the main spar ESM removed from the center wing section in order to install their standard gear. Since the wheels came up at a twisted angle they had to clear so much of it away. With the SGS gear there is 1/2" more room for the spar to be added back and strengthened. I plan to make that modification as well because I like to yank and bank my airplanes and I don't want to break the wing. When I get done with the modification I will make and sell a detailed instruction sheet and the wood pieces needed to retrofit the gear.
I received in a ZDZ 40 Rear Exhaust from TBM. Nice configuration for this 80" Hurricane. Looks like just the top of the head fins will stick through the cowl. The exhaust is going to be behind so I will have nothing sticking out the sides. Should be pretty clean. Plus it will easily turn a 20 X 10 so I am going to have a lot of power up front.

RE: ESM 82
Wow i really enjoyed the videos , the cockpit area seems a little smaller then i figured for an 80" wingspan model , does a 1/6 full figured pilot fit in there or would he look really cramed in ?

RE: ESM 82
I had a 3W 28 in mine it fit good the spark plug cap stuck out and the corner of the exaust. The take off was great then I turned right the plane went left I went more right pulled the throtle back to idle and it went in. The alerons were back wards. The power of the 3W 28 was more than enough to fly it. I have seen Jmohn fly his and it is impressive powered by electirc.

RE: ESM 82
Here are a coiuple pic's of the cheap 1/6 scale pilot. This is not a BBI pilot but a cheap oue. If you use a standard 1/6 scale pilot the torso is about 3/8" too high. But i generally remove the torso and sew the clothing together and stuff with batting material. The problems with the cockpit area not being bigger is that the cockpit area was small on the real plane plus the actual seat was down so far that it would be touching the wing on this plane. I have to reach a happy median so you can still run servo pushrods and cables. The 1/6 scale pilot will work with a minor mod the his torso length or you could remove the pedistole of the seat and drop it down upto 1/2 ".... This pilot had on short pants that why they look so short....

Dave,
I was sorry to hear about yours! That sucks!
I have the LA-7 pretty close to finished. I just need to install the cockpit kit. I am toying with the idea of installing inner gear doors too, but haven't figured out a good method yet. I may just leave them off for now.
I liked the way your big ugly stick flew! Much better than the other one out there that day

RE: ESM 82
Just started on the kit Ty did for the LA-7 and it's great! His instructions using YouTube are great too. I use my iPhone to watch them on while I am doing the work and it's real easy that way.
I wish he would pre-paint them for me though
Actually that's one of my favorite parts of building.

RE: ESM 82
Hi guys,
Looks like some great work here... keep up the good work..
thought I would post some pics of my customisation and build.
I put an SC 180 FS in the one I was building...
Did a full cockpit, added Nav and Landing lights, added rivets to Fuz and wings and will be changing the Squadron codes.
Some pics of the things I have done along the way...

Very nice work. Proves you don't have to spend huge cash on gear re-engineering and stuff a gigantic gas burner in the nose. Not that these are bad ideas, after all that's what I'm doing with mine.

RE: ESM 82
The white lines you can see are a white pencil...these are just as a guide so I could add the rivets... The only actual panels are the gun hatches... I used aluminium tape for these.
When its weathered its looks ok and the rivets stand out realy well.
Wings are finished now...The fuz has been partly weathered..just need to do the other side and than give it a few coats of Fuel proofer..

I finished the mount design for the Sierra Giant Scale ESM Hawker Hurricane Gear today. The modification is not that bad. I plan on making a reto-fit kit with parts and a detailed step-by-step instruction with pictures. It starts with slicing the sheeting and pulling the rear mount out with a pliers. A new mount is marked for T-nuts and epoxied in place. Once mounted this gear is much different from the ESM gear in that it will rotate so the wheel is flat to the bottom of the wing when retracted and then rotated to the proper straight position when extended.
