ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I need help finding pictures of soviet pilots during WWII, I have an LA-7 and have purchased a cockpit kit from Ty and plan on using a 12" pilot figure on it but I have not been able to find any pictures of soviet pilots and the equipment they used in order to build a pilot that would closely resemble a soviet.
I have already started to put one together using parts that I have found on several sites unfortunatelly my search for fotographs have yielded no result as to the color of the uniforms, type of oxygen mask used and type of parachute harness used.
So far I'm very pleased with the results but still want to make it as accurate as posible even if I have to scratch built some of it as I did for one of my japanese pilots.
If any of you are interested in seeing what I have come up with so far I will post some pictures later.
Thanks.

Stoat, this is what I had come up with so far but since then I have finally come across fotos of soviet pilots from that era.
the parachute I was using is a british one and is wrong, the soviet parachute I have seen in the fotos are more like the ones the US Navy used in those days, the flying cap is also diferent ( the helmet used looked more like the IJN helmet) the way the pilot uniform looks right now resembles more the fotos of female soviet pilots. I have been ordering accesories as I find them and as soon as everything is here I'll post some pics.

The LA-7 has a lot of positive incidence in the wings and I recommend you add some down thrust to the engine (2 degrees or so). If you check you wings you will see that they are 5-6 positive. Both myself and another guy in our club have this plane and have done this and it flies much better now.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hi everybody!
I am going to buy one of this beautiful WWII soviet fighter, and I am asking if the zenoah 26 that I have will have power to fly this one or shall I buy a greater engine? I just see the the saito FG-30 and FG-36 are bit large. Wicht one must I put, from the JC28cc until a 5occ gasser?
Thank you very much for your help and time!
Best regards,
Aitzol.

The JC 28 is a great match with this airframe. The new jc30cc is out and is about 500 rpm more powerful with the same prop.
I flew one with a 50cc in it and it felt heavy in comparison

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I have one of these that I have just started, I fly electric and would be very interested in any ideas involving the creation of a battery hatch. I have an Eflite P-160 and have batteries for a 10S or 12S config, I also have a Castle ICE 120 HV controller. With my other planes, ESM Frank and H9 HellCat I opted to remove the wing to get at the batteries. As I have converted my ESM gear to electric actuators wing removal is not that much of a hardship, but a hatch is much more convienient. Anyway good luck and again any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

I fly at AMPS, looks like we did not hook up at the One Eighth in the fall, for that event I had my BH T-28 120 on 10S (now running it on 10 and 12s)and my H9 HellCat. The Frank was in the shop, it is in the final stages of being repainted and will be flying again this weekend. The LA-7 is pretty much still in the box, I am starting with the installation of the cockpit from Ty's Planes.

I was at the OEAF event on Saturday AZThud, sorry I missed you. AMPS is a long way to drive. If you need some place closer once in a while you might consider coming by the Aux. 6 field. Not the world's best flying site (understatement) but serviceable and not too far away. (Yuma and Airport Rd. right on the outskirts of Buckeye.) I've got a KMP Bearcat sitting in the box that I had not considered for electric but that may change if things work out well in the Hellcat. Look forward to meeting up some time and good luck with the Lavochkin.

What ever happened to the guy with the Saito 325R5 radial installed in this plane? From Australia I think...
Have you guys added nose weight in addition to the gas engine? If so how much weight and which engine are you using?

PilotC4 - the pilot looks great. Will have to find one for mine. Picked up a Cotswould Collectables American pilot for the Corsair and it is impressive. Hopefully they will have something to suit.

Stoat,
I'm working on a second one and still waiting on accesories for both, I'm trying to make it as close to the russian flight gear for that period as possible. I will post some pictures as soon as I finish it, ordered a bunch of new things for them but have not received it yet

Trolled the interweb last night for hours. Cannot find any decent russian pilots in 1/6 scale. Pilotrc4, where are you ordering bits from? Might be able to mod a russian infantryman.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Stoat, unfortunately no one makes rusian pilots in 1/6 scale.
I'm using the closest things comercialy available to try and imitate one.
this is what I have used so far.
FLYING HELMET - IJN WITH SOME MODIFICATIONS.
PARACHUTE - WWII US NAVY
BOOTS - WWII GERMAN
LEATHER JACKET- SEARCH ON E-BAY FOR 1/6 LEATHER JACKET.
UNIFORM - FOUND A 1/6 MIG PILOT (CHINESE FROM KOREAN WAR)
BELT- WWII GERMAN BELT
GUN AND HOLSTER - WWII RUSIAN INFANTRY.
I'm still finding things that would work and modifing to look like the ones used by the Rusians.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Cool, so sort of a cross between US and German flight gear. Thanks for the photos.
It appears the Russians had a fair number of female combat pilots - something the US and Poms didn't figure out till many years later on. I'm always amazed at the associated facts and knowledge you pick up doing this hobby, especially if you do some research into the subject you are modeling!
Got one of these for my Corsair - http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-9451123..._2162_28843193
The parachute and head gear look close enough. Will just have to find that flight suit. Thought this my be close - http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-9451123..._2164_13021313
Cheers

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hi, people!
I just received this warplane that I finally go with an DLE-30 V2. In the near future look like that you can go with electric retracts for any bird of ESM. The retract that you can see in the picture is from the P-47.
Looking to a pilot and of course to the cockpit.
Best regards,
Aitzol.

Very sad. I gather the airframe has been fixed. Not sure about the motor.
