RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Yeah, I thought I was being a little too vague with the rest of the clues soI threw that one in. I should have known that the warbird wizzes on here would have known exactly what i was talking about as soon as they read that part- the "football war"
between El Salvador and Honduras. They take that soccer thing pretty seriously.
The port wings tendancy to stall well before the starboard wing during slow carrier landings made it EXTREMELY difficult and dangerous for carrier operations- along with other issues with visibility and the plane bouncing as soon as it touched down on the deck. Oncea "stall strip" on the wing and a "bleed valve" for the gear were installed was it ready for carrier service. "WhistlingDeath" asthe Japanesse called it- what a great warbird!
perttime, you're up.

Uhh... again.
This one looks pretty cool. Let's see...
1) it was built in response to a government request for a "high speed courier aircraft"
2) four companies built proposals
3) in addition to the winning design, this one was the only serious contender. So this one never entered service in the country of origin.
4) one of the prototype/pre-production aircraft made some use of its 20mm gun in a convenient conflict in a nearby country.

He-112
He-112
Heinkel He 112
"The Heinkel He 112 was a fighter aircraft designed by Walter and Siegfried GΓΌnter. It was one of four aircraft designed to compete for the Luftwaffe's 1933 fighter contract, which was eventually won by the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
...
...
(Rocket experiments)
In June 1937 Erich Warsitz undertook the initial flight testing of the He 112 fitted with von Braunβs rocket engine. Despite the wheels-up landing and having the fuselage on fire, it proved to official circles that an aircraft could be flown satisfactorily with a back-thrust system through the rear.
...
...
("Tests" is Spain)
When it was clear the 112 was losing the contest to the Bf 109, Heinkel offered to re-equip V6 with 20 mm cannon armament as an experimental aircraft. She was then broken down and shipped to Spain on 9 December and assigned to Versuchsjagdgruppe 88, a group within the Legion Condor devoted to testing new aircraft and joined three V-series Bf 109s which were also in testing.
Oberleutnant Wilhelm Balthasar used it to attack an armoured train and an armoured car. Other pilots flew it, but the engine seized during landing in July and she was written off."

Alright, one more... :
This aircraft was a naval version of a land-based aircraft, specifically adapted for carrier operations. It's name was arrived by collapsing it's longer name which was made up of it's "new operating enviroment" and the original aircrafts name. The aircraft's design as a naval conversion proved to be a problem and once in service it suffered high attrition rates due to structural damage caused by hard carrier landings. One modifacation to the aircraft moved it's center of gravity aft making it's slow-speed flight characterstics and control very difficult and, as you can imagine, it made accurate landings onboard an aircraft carrier and resulted in high accident rates. The final production model that addressed most of the problems didn't enter service until well after the war.
The first use of this aircraft in sustained carrier operations came during the British-American invasion of North Africa which started in 1942 and becasue of their limited armament capabilities they were given the mission of combat air patrol.

Supermarine Seafire?
Name seems to fit the clues and a quick look up confirms that the Seafire had CG issues.

Oh my word, now I have to think up a question!!! OK, lets try.
Appearing just before WW2 this aircraft was nicknamed after a gentleman in a cloak armed with a scythe.
Its name?

Fokker G.I.
Without looking anything up that's my first thought. It's nickname, "le faucheur" (french for Reaper) was pretty deserving with it's 8 machine guns.

What aircraft doI describe?
1) This aircraft saw service between the late 1940s and early 1980s.
2) It's design and success inspired it's modern day successor.
3) Designed during WWII to meet the specific needs of one military branch, it was later adapted to be in service by other military branches.
4) Although not it's role, 2 of these aircraft successfully shot down 2 Chinesse fighters while searching for survivors of another plane that was shot down by those 2 same fighters.

Wow, first reply is correct! A-1 Skyraider.
Beefy looking airplane- it inspired today A-10. I thought it was interesting how2 wereable to shoot down to Chinesse La-7s.Guess the credit goes to our pilots training. I get to see one of these planes on displayevery day on my way home from work...beautifull sight.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
This should be a quick one.
1) three aircraft were completed. One survives in a museum
2) it performed really well and was way more economical to buy and operate than "the other aircraft"
3) "the other aircraft" was already in use in the country where it was produced, so the government was not interested... So, nobody else bought it either.

4) I am quite used to hearing the sound of the engines used on this aircraft, except the planes I hear have two of them. The aircraft I am looking for had just one.

F-20?
Lew B
F-20?
Lew B
It was obviously based on the F-5, and was initially even called F-5G. Just F-5 was not really close enough.
"Much of the F-20's development was carried out as part of a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) project called "FX", which intended to sell less-advanced fighter designs to U.S. allies to limit the possibility of front-line U.S. technology falling into Soviet hands. ... Although Northrop had high hopes for the F-20 in the international market, changes in policy following Ronald Reagan's election left the F-20 competing for sales with front line fighters like the F-16."
The first and second prototypes crashed: demo flight and demo practice. The aircraft was performing perfectly but the demo pilots took themselves beyond what they could personally cope with.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Sounds like Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor
some may not consider it a warbird because it is in service now.
(if I got it right, please start another, or nominate someone else)
