Well the Christmas Bullet was never put into production. It was certainly an early attempt at a cantilever winged bipe, but the designer, Dr. William Christmas, didn't do a very good job of it. The wings came off on both prototypes!

Please identify for me an airplane which:
One of the earliest uses of the cantelever wing
Single seat
Lost the evaluation but was still put into production
the two prototypes were powered with two different engines that were also different from the production aircraft's engine.
The production aircraft were used by two different countries
It was a bi-plane
Its perfomance was limited by the engine they were in essence forced to use.
The fuselage came from one airplane and the wings came off of another existing different airplane from the same manufacturer.
An RC company provides both a 1/4 and 1/3 size kit of this plane
The full scale manufacturer built planes with wings numbering from one to five

Ok here goes,
this aircraft was developed as a fighter but was saddled with engines with limited development potential.
It was fast and powerful and equipped a few squadrons. The pilots liked it but the groundcrew were less than pleased.
It was British

Tempest and/or Typhoon. The engines were Napier Sabres from memory (H-24 rotating cylinder sleeves - including porting)

Westland Whirlwind
... using RR Peregrine engines which could not be spared enough development time, the Merlin being the important engine. Well liked by pilots and performance was great at low altitudes.

5) four of the aircraft saw action when instructor pilots joined the attack against a pretty major bomber formation. Some sources credit one of the pilots with one bomber shot down

Avia B-135.
It was Czechoslovakian but was used by the Bulgarians. Only 12 built, and they soon were sent to training squadrons.

Apparently, before WW2 it was right up there with early Spitfire and Bf 109 but development ceased when Germany got going.
There's a bit of information on it out there. Here's one thread:

The look... there's something ... lowriderish (???) about it.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Thanks perttime! Great question!
Lets see here...
-Known by several designations and names, this aircraft was a multi role military design.
-Only one was completed to be tested, but four were under construction
-Test flights were conducted but high speed flight was never attempted. The gear was left down on all flights.
Any ideas?

Major Tomski:
-Known by several designations and names, this aircraft was a multi role military design. (T-4, T-100, etc)
-Only one was completed to be tested, but four were under construction
-Test flights were conducted but high speed flight was never attempted. The gear was left down on all flights.
-The aircraft was one of the first to use of a new material in aircraft construction
-This material was titanium
-This aircraft was unique in having a unique cockpit design (retractable nose (similar to Concorde and Tu-144) left zero forward visibility)
You're up!

Sukhoi T-100... Wow!
Sukhoi T-100... Wow!
Actually I'd done a lot of research on this particular design for a plastic kit I had:

I came up with the same aircraft but didn't have time to confirm it against all the facts. Oh well, that's how it goes.

The Curtiss P-36 Hawk, also known as the Curtiss Hawk Model 75, was an American-designed and built fighter aircraft of the 1930s and 40s. A contemporary of both the Hawker Hurricane and Messerschmitt Bf 109, it was one of the first of a new generation of combat aircraft—a sleek monoplane design making extensive use of metal in its construction and powered by a powerful radial engine. Obsolescent at the onset of World War II and best known as the predecessor of the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, the P-36 saw only limited combat with the United States Army Air Forces, but it was used more extensively by the French Air Force, both during the Battle of France and by the Vichy French, and also by the British Commonwealth (where it was known as the Mohawk), and Chinese air units. Several dozen also fought in the Finnish Air Force against the Soviet Air Forces. With around 1,000 aircraft built, the P-36 was a major commercial success for Curtiss.
Although its competitor, the Seversky P-35, also underperformed and was more expensive, it was still declared the winner and awarded a contract for 77 aircraft. However, on June 16, 1936, Curtiss received an order from USAAC for three prototypes designated Y1P-36. The USAAC was concerned about political turmoil in Europe and about Seversky's ability to deliver P-35s in a timely matter, and therefore wanted a backup fighter. The Y1P-36 (Model 75E) was powered by a 900 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830-13 Twin Wasp engine and further enlarged scalloped rear canopy. The new aircraft performed so well that it won the 1937 USAAC competition with an order for 210 P-36A fighters.

Nope not the P-35 or P-36

Its shortcomings led to the design of one of the best, well know fighters of WW-II
