Ok guys, here go. This one is a tribute to my dad!!!!

1. Original development started in 1941. This plane is still in service today, although not in it's orginally designed role.
2.  Even though this plane was designed during war time, it didn't enter military service until after the war.

Sorry Al, that's not it.

Ok guys, after a delay of RCU being read-only over the weekend due to the upgrade of our forum software we are back up and online and we can post again. So let's pick up where we left off on this quiz. Here's the next clue!!!

1. Original development started in 1941. This plane is still in service today, although not in it's orginally designed role.
2. Even though this plane was designed during war time, it didn't enter military service until after the war
3. This plane was built by it's origin country, and eventually built by one of it's enemies as well.
4. No longer used for military service in 1984.
5. Plane has been used by 4 different countries.
6. The plane was at one point modified to take off from a carrier, but could not land on the carrier and had to land at a friendy base or ditch in the ocean.

Joe got it right!!!! This was a tribute to my dad as he was a radar operator on these planes when he was in the Navy. Some of his memorable experiences during that time were during the Cuban Missile Crisis that actually had a lock on a Russian sub and opened their bomb doors to drop a torepdo on the sub. The sub pulled the plug and submerged on that. My dad was also part of the recovery of John Glenn on his space shot, my dad's plane was stationed as part of search for the capsule as it came back to earth, although he wound up being hundreds of miles from where Glenn came down. But still, my dad was always very proud to have been a part of it.

Lockheed P-2 Neptune - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here are the rest of my clues on this hunt:
Lockeed P-2 Neptune

7. normal crew, 9-11
7. Was used as a gunship at one point in it's life.
8. Plane's main role during survice was anti-submarine warfare.
9. Fitted with both piston and jet engines, but jet engines burned regular Avgas instead of jet fuel.
10. Jet engines were only used for takeoff and low level operations.
11. This plane is currently being used for aerial firefighting bombardments.
12. The third production plane of this type was used for a record setting distance flight with the record standing until 1962.

Ken;

I remember when I was a young man and these birds flew in/out of Jacksonville NAS. That was in the '60s, of course. Cheers to your dad. Thanks; Ernie P.

He was a great guy. Unfortunately I lost my dad to cancer in '96, he was only 63 years old. I've been contemplating scratch building a P2V-Neptune as a tribute to my dad. I'm thinking something in the 140" wingspan range. I've talked to Eric Clapp from Jet Central about it and he is all for the project if I ever build it, that's because he used to fly them!!!!!

I fly at the former Norton AFB now called San Bernardino International Airport and with all the fires going on around here a couple Neptunes are flying in and out all day fighting them.

I have, for the first time in some days, been able to log in to RCU. Apparently, no one else has been able to post either. I don't know if any one else is able to participate, but I'll throw a softball just to get things rolling again. Let me know if you can respond. Thanks; Ernie P.

Question: What warbird pilot do I describe?

Clues:

(1) Even before being shot down and taken prisoner, the question often asked about this pilot was (para) “How has he managed to stay alive?”.

(2) He had already been shot down four times.

I still don't know if I'm talking to myself, but.... FWIW, I have to sign out, and then in again, every time. Thanks; Ernie P.
