RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Ok guys, here go. This one is a tribute to my dad!!!!
1. Original development started in 1941. This plane is still in service today, although not in it's orginally designed role.
2. Even though this plane was designed during war time, it didn't enter military service until after the war.

Joe got it right!!!! This was a tribute to my dad as he was a radar operator on these planes when he was in the Navy. Some of his memorable experiences during that time were during the Cuban Missile Crisis that actually had a lock on a Russian sub and opened their bomb doors to drop a torepdo on the sub. The sub pulled the plug and submerged on that. My dad was also part of the recovery of John Glenn on his space shot, my dad's plane was stationed as part of search for the capsule as it came back to earth, although he wound up being hundreds of miles from where Glenn came down. But still, my dad was always very proud to have been a part of it.

11. This plane is currently being used for aerial firefighting bombardments.
12. The third production plane of this type was used for a record setting distance flight with the record standing until 1962.

He was a great guy. Unfortunately I lost my dad to cancer in '96, he was only 63 years old. I've been contemplating scratch building a P2V-Neptune as a tribute to my dad. I'm thinking something in the 140" wingspan range. I've talked to Eric Clapp from Jet Central about it and he is all for the project if I ever build it, that's because he used to fly them!!!!!

I fly at the former Norton AFB now called San Bernardino International Airport and with all the fires going on around here a couple Neptunes are flying in and out all day fighting them.
