F-4 is a good guess but not the warbird I'm referring to....

This warbird was in service for nearly 50 years
Many of these warbirds were shot down during its career
This warbird was one of the first used to develop a very advanced technology
This warbird never fired a shot in anger

Good Guess RCGuy....but not the SR-71/A-12...although you're getting closer

This warbird was in service for nearly 50 years
Many of these warbirds were shot down during its career
This warbird was one of the first used to develop a very advanced technology
This warbird never fired a shot in anger
This warbird was used by Multiple branches and three other countries...although one was not authorized...

OK...this next clue may sound dirty...but it's not but we'll see if the Mod's let us get away with it....some versions of this warbird made use of a "TWAT".....

We're looking for a yellow warbird that burns easily? Really? Thanks; Ernie P.

Ryan Firebee? It used the same engine as the Tweety Bird and the Pinto.

Ryan Firebee?

Ding Ding Ding!

A/BQM-34 Firebee First flew in 1951......saw service against N.Vietnam, China, N Korea, etc
Was last used in 2003 in OIF to eject Chaff ahead of the tomahawks headed for Baghdad.
One of the first uses of early Stealth technology
Used by the USAF, USN, US Army, Turkey, Israel, and the unauthorized version was reverse engineered by China
"TWAT" stands for Traveling Wave Amplifier Tube" which was used to amplify radar signals to make the Firebee appear larger like a U-2
The engine used was a J-69 also used in the A/T-37 Tweet and the Temco TT Pinto
The airborne system used to launch and control was the DC-130H...but they were also ground launched.
HEMP,HIDE, and HATRAC were all evasive systems installed per mission requirements
Since it was originally designed as a target drone.....Many Many were shot down...

You persevered RCGuy! Your quiz now!

Here we go:

1. Yet another warbird that never fired a shot, in anger or otherwise.

2. This airplane was derived from another that it closely resembled. It carried extra crew, had a different purpose and completely different designation, so the plane it was derived from will NOT be the correct answer.

3. Only two were built and one still survives in a museum.

4. The airplane it was derived from evolved into a much more famous and long-lived warbird.

Sorry, Hydro, not a carrier-based plane, nor the XB-70.

Here we go:

1. Yet another warbird that never fired a shot, in anger or otherwise.

2. This airplane was derived from another that it closely resembled. It carried extra crew, had a different purpose and completely different designation, so the plane it was derived from will NOT be the correct answer.

4. The airplane it was derived from evolved into a much more famous and long-lived warbird.

5. Cold War era.

6. While the project it was built for was a failure, it was not the fault of the airplane.

7. The example that did not survive was lost with fatal results.

Fairly close, Hydro.

1. Yet another warbird that never fired a shot, in anger or otherwise.

2. This airplane was derived from another that it closely resembled. It carried extra crew, had a different purpose and completely different designation, so the plane it was derived from will NOT be the correct answer.

6. While the project it was built for was a failure, it was not the fault of the airplane.

7. The example that did not survive was lost with fatal results.

8. The project involved unmanned reconnaissance.

9. After the fatal crash, this aircraft was replaced in the recon project by the B-52.

10. This aircraft was retired and placed in storage after only a bit over 100 hours of flight time.
