Answer: Staff Sergeant Michael Arooth
Michael Arooth
Staff Sergeant Arooth's official record as a gunner -- the greatest in Air Force history -- included shooting down at least 17 enemy planes on only 14 missions, though it was estimated he actually downed more than 20 enemy aircraft. In 1958 Arooth was selected as a pallbearer at the ceremonies of the burial of the Unknown Soldier of World War II at Arlington National Cemetery.
Distinguished Service Cross
Awarded for actions during the World War II
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Michael Arooth, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Tail gunner in a B-17 Heavy Bomber of the 527th Bombardment Squadron, 379th Bombardment Group (H), EIGHTH Air Force, while participating in a bombing mission on 30 July 1943, against enemy ground targets in Germany. On that date, Staff Sergeant Arooth shot down three enemy airplanes and even though the airplane's oxygen line was broken, one gun was jammed, and he was severely wounded, he remained at his post, repaired his gun, resumed fire, and destroyed the fourth plane. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Arooth on this occasion have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 8th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.

Ok, Ernie P. helped out with the subject for this one..... a sort of Christmas Story... (sans the 'Leg Lamp')
- I was an allied forces aviator during WWII
- I was involved in an incident during the same festive time of year we are now enjoying.
- During this incident, half of the 10 crewmembers aboard my aircraft were killed or wounded, including myself.

I want to apologize to the group for not having a question ready. In the real world I own and operate a computer service company. One of my clients is a liquor store and I was working on their POS (Point of Sale) server when the server literally died in front of me. After a bunch of scrambling I discovered I had an identical Dell server in my shop that had just come off of service as a mail server. I was able to swap out the hard drives and get them back up on the spare server. But this whole ordeal took up 3 days of my time. I had time to check in and see the questions, and field my answer but just didn't have time to work up a new question. So I am really sorry for that. The Holidays are a huge time for my client as they run about $20,000-$25,000 a day during the holidays, so it's huge that their server be up and running!!!
Thanks for others stepping in with a question. I promise I that in the future if I dont' have a question ready I will not field and answer!!!!

Obviously, something unexpected has happened with AMA 74894. However, we can't all sit idle any longer. I'm going to ask a sidebar question; one outside the normal pattern. Whoever answers it will ask teh next question, etc; in the normal manner. But when AMA 74894 returns, he will preempt this pattern and reassume the lead. To keep things light, I'll shoot for an unusual question about an unusual airman. He wasn't first on any one's list; but he was most assuredly last on several. Thanks; Ernie P.
Question: What airman do I describe?
Clues:
(1) For most of his career, he labored in obscurity; just another service member.
(2) He fought in two world wars.

Unfortunately Jim's dad, Pat Buzzeo (who I featured in my last Knowledge Quiz), passed away the week before Christmas. It was a huge loss for his family. And for anybody, such as myself, that has ever come in contact with Pat feels the loss. Jim, please pass my sympathies on to you and the rest of the family. The world in general, and the RC world specifically, has suffered a huge loss.
