Here's a link to the book I referenced: http://www.amazon.com/Banshees-Royal.../dp/096952000X VERY highly recommended: You'll get to read some hilarious and fun stories!! There's a photo of a USN Banshee with my father's name on the side (LCDR J.C.Sloan, RCN) and also a photo of my uncle Walter holding a Sidewinder.

OK, here's a weird one:
1. Single engine
2. Crew of three
3. It was a competitor to a very well known aircraft and actually was deemed to be a better aircraft than its competitor in early comparisons. However, a lot of unexpected delays kept it from being properly developed and produced and it never saw combat.
4. Fewer than 200 built.
5. Very evocative name.

I'll try to come up with a question by tomorrow. If someone else has one ready and would like to jump in, I wouldn't mind a bit.

The Wikipedia entry for the TBY has everything I know about it. It was the "crew of three" clue that tipped me off: Thought of the Avenger and looked for contemporaries. Good question.

OK. Looking for an aircraft.

1. The last of its kind.

2. Many of its pilots disliked it.

Avia S-199?

Bf 109G airframe but, with Junkers Jumo 211 F and propeller like on Heinkel He 111
The type proved unreliable and performed poorly in combat. One Avia pilot remarked "she tried to kill us on every take off and landing."

Not the plane I had in mind, but a great quote. I don"t think my plane was quite that bad.

6. Used by eight countries. But two of those countries cancelled orders because the first ones delivered handled so poorly.

Thanks. I have seen the one the CAF has at Ellington Field in Houston.

I'll work up some hints and post them when I get home from work this afternoon.

Oh dear... I suspected my guess might be correct.
I'll come up with something, probably in 12 hours, or so.
