What warbird do I describe?

1.Biplane with unequal span wings
2. Twin engine
3. Developed to counter a specific threat
4. Three different engines were tested, the last being 110hp
5. There were two crew.
6. English built
7 It was fitted with floats
8 It was a dismal failure and saw little service

Nothing yet. His name is well known, but at least in the US, not quite so well known as Doolottle's or Mitchell's.

2. He once said that he spoke English with an American accent, although he was not an American.

Pierre Clostermann it is; well done! I didn't expect this to take a long time, but this may be a record. You're up, Johnny S.

The American accent comment is from his book, "The Big Show," in which he says something about the warm welcome he got from the RAF, despite his American accent, which he picked up at Caltech. Whether he really had an American accent, I don't know.

1. 9 built.
2. Designed in 1941.
3. Different versions of this same aircraft were proposed with no engines, one engine, two engines and even four engines.
