A warbird again....

1) It was upgraded during its career - A LOT.
2) One design principle was to save weight by keeping parts count down.
3) The chief designer felt that one part of the government specification would detract from performance - and ignored it.

4) The last models had about three times more power than the first ones.

If it's not a warbird, then it may be one of the following three:

1. What engine powered the Bristol Brabazon?
2. What engine powered the Breda BZ.308?
3. What engine would cause a mechanic to tell you to "**** off" if you told him to go change all the sparkplugs?

I think the stainless? exhaust makes this engine look like a piece of art.
The military versions all look like they have individual exhausts so this particular engine must have come out of a commercial aircraft. Perhaps the Brabazon or the one I was originally thinking of, the Airspeed Ambassador. Way to go JohnnyS

Thanks!

OK, now for a new question. Hmmm....

1. WW I fighter aircraft.
2. Single engine: V8 liquid cooled.
3. Prototype: Only one built.
4. For anyone who is familiar with WW I fighters, this looks odd: Not as odd as some, but still very strange.

Not the "Nighthawk" although it's almost as weird.

New hint, and a correction:

1. WW I fighter aircraft.
2. Single engine: V8 liquid cooled.
3. Prototype: Only one built.
4. For anyone who is familiar with WW I fighters, this looks odd: Not as odd as some, but still very strange.
5. HOW many ailerons? Wow!
6. The picture in Wikipedia is WRONG.

Not the C 1, sorry.

7. Achtung, baby!

Dies ist eine sehr interessante frage in der Tat! (This is a very interesting question indeed!)
Ich denke, dass "noch größer D" kann die richtige flugzeuge haben. (I think that "Even Bigger D" may have the correct aircraft.)

Sorry, but not that Fokker.

(I've always wanted to say that!)

7. Achtung, baby!
8. The engine was inspired by the Hispano-Suiza V-8.
9. With reference to clue #6: The picture in Wikipedia shows the first aircraft of this type built by the manufacturer, although the plane I'm looking for is the second of this type built by this manufacturer.
10. First flown spring of 1918.

I would have said the Fokker Tripe but it used a radial and made it's appearance prior to 1918
