Easy warbird? Forget the heavy metal fighters with retracts, low wings, and huge engines - get a military version of a Piper J-3 Cub!

RE: Most user friendly warbird ?
I have the TF P51 Mustang and that big bird flies the greates. Has a DA50 engine withal of the retracts and flaps. Takes off and lands with no problem.. Altho, I do not recommend it for a beginner.
Also have the 60 size P40 and it is ok except the take off. Always want to torque roll.

It really depends on what your looking for in a warbird and your experience. Want something in the 40 size and semi scale, you can not beat the Hanger 9 PTS Mustang. It is tough and easy to fly. It can also be very fast and flys right where you point it! I also have a Great Planes PT-17 and you really have to fly that one. It takes 15-20 minutes to put together, you have to be on top of it on take offs and fly it all the way down on landings. It is truely beautiful in the air! Good luck in your search!

You know what I'm going to say: Junkers JU87 Stuka this is HANDS DOWN the easiest to fly and the most feared during the beginning of the war. Nice wide stance, it almost does donuts on the runway, NO retracts to mess with, flaps are optional ( I rarely use them at all), long tail moment, long nose for ease of CG balancing, gull wing for the ultimate in stability, and you can scale it out as mild or wild as you choose. There are .60 sizes, .120 sizes and of course the Ziroli 62cc size. Its far from fast compaired to the fighter aircraft, but it holds its own. It makes you a great pilot. How often do you hear of a Stuka crashing? 9 out of 10 times its pilot error. Use your best judgement!

Hi, just after some opinions on what people consider to be the best flying warbird in regards to stability/ flight characteristics / landings ect...

What size plane do you want? Once we know this, we can help narrow things down for you. If you want a 40-50 size plane, low wing, then go with a Kyosho FW-190. It is one of the best handling planes to fly you could find and there is zero balancing issues. It comes in electric or glow versions. If you want a 60 size, then go with a Hangar 9 P-47 or Blue Nose P-51. The TF P-47 and P-51's are a little more scale, but also heavier.
If you want a 120-140 size plane, then an ESM FW-190, P-47, Stuka, P-51.

RE: Most user friendly warbird ?
Funny no one has mentioned the Spitfire as it is has good flight characteristics and is similar to that of the P-47. Both use a similar Eliptical wing and are very forgiving.
Except the Spitfire has closer gear spacing so would be a little more difficult on landings.

I was going to say Spitfire. I wouldn't say easy but Pilot friendly is a better term. It just feels right.

RE: Most user friendly warbird ?
Most ppl havent said spitfire simply because of the narrow gear. Easy plane to fly in the air, but is more prone to ground looping then planes with wider gear stanc(ala fw-190, p-51, p-47 etc)

What no first war aircraft? I am getting ready to start a fokker DVIII. No retracts No need for a huge engine and they just beautiful flying around the field. If you had to have a WWII machine I would have to say that the P-47 is a good one. I built the TF GS P-47 for a club member, let me tell you what a great kit!

TF also has the GS p-47 arf and a kit. Both about 87" or so.

RE: Most user friendly warbird ?
This is a great question that usually brings fans of their favorite plane to the table saying their's is "the best". The key is you need something with lighter wing loading than a P-38, and easier to land than a Typhoon. My first warbird was a P-51. The best thing about them or a P-47 is they usually have light wing loading, and the gear is spaced to afford better ground handling. I would also suggest a Hellcat, and not just 'cause I love them, but because they were very good at making a mediocre pilot good enough to live another day in WWII and many said they were a breeze to fly after mastering the AT6/SNJ Texan.
A Corsair can be hard to fly if they aren't very light. They didn't call them Ensign Eliminator for nothing ya know.

I got to go with the P-47 or Hellcat also. Both are great flying planes. They Hellcat does have rotationg retracts which require more maintenance. I like the P-51 best, but that's just me. I like how my Stuka flys but landings can be tricky as it will tip a wing once the plane touches down if you aren't careful.

Spitfire.....apart from its narrow undercarriage , what is its flight performance like? It has always been one of my favorite aircraft.

RE: Most user friendly warbird ?
The Stuka has a narrow gear set an is not the easiest to take-off and land. Start with a wide gear setup like P47, 190 or P51.
All the Hanger 9 planes fly great. Both the large ones (P47 adn P51) are great planes. A Spitfire is a great flying plane, but takes forever to bleed off speed once you land. An AT6 is a great flying plane, but again narrow gear set and tough to stear. Hellcat is nice, but rotating retracts are expensive and can be a pain to maintain.
The thing I like about my P51 is that when you lower the flaps, add power and it comes in nice and slow.

They fly very well once in the air, the only thing to beware of is a tip stall if the motor cuts on a downwind leg, or if you get it too slow on landing. Just typical stuff for this type of aircraft really.
This ones 1/5 scale at 81" powered by a zenoah g38 at just over 19lb`s and it really does fly like a big low wing sports model.

RE: Most user friendly warbird ?
Ok, I'm chiming in as a beginner warbird guy myself. I would LOVE to build a Stuka but want to stay away from giant scale.(Money ya know) .60 to .90 would be awesome. What Stukas are out there in this class?
