radio, CA, epoxy, engine, and probably some replacement wing sheeting to replace the too-soft balsa that finds its way into some kits.........

Default about the covering

is there a covering that can be painted to make a replica of the real thing? if so, what make of paints are best for this and can be airbrushed?

In the UK we use Glosstex film (natural colour), apply it like Solarfilm, then use Sanding sealer (dope and talcom powder) to fill the weave. Then litely sand, then spray with normal paints.

This is scaring me! if you dont know these things you are in no position to build or fly a spit. They ground loop like mad and need lots of rudder coordination.
PLay smart and fly a low wing tail dragger, get some experience first. If you want to build it for static display go for it!!!!

tim thats the sort of post i wasnt looking for and the sort that pisses me off. Who made you the know all and say all of flying and building?

So what if im only a beginner and only been flying for over a month. Havent you heard of a long term project which the spit will be. Does it hurt to get a little knowledge of the plane and buliding techniques? NO

And anyway a low wing taildragger aerobatic is already on the cards but i wont be getting one until i can fly my trainer like one.

I used 0.70 oz fiberglass to cover my TF Spitfire, and I just finished putting panel lines on and priming it. It was a LOT easier than using Monokote to cover it. I will not be Monokoting any of my models again. Ever.

If you do build the TF Spit, be careful when you build and sand the wings - the sheeting is very thin.

I know I have bigger than a 12 oz tank going in there. It's at least a 16. I'll check tomorrow and let you know.

The paint I'll be using will be regular interior house latex sprayed with an automotive touch up gun. I know Sean McHale uses an airbrush and Testors paints on his planes, but I think he's nuts

I'll be topcoating with Nelson Hobbies' flat clearcoat for glow fuel resistance.

I was thinking i could use testors paints but is there different types for airplane use? or would the polycarbonate paint be ok. I was also thinking of using Tamiya acrylic paints as they do more military colours but is it fuel proof?

I stronly doubt any acrylic paint is glow fuel proof. I can almost guarantee it's not.

As far as the Testors, I don't know what Sean used. He frequents this forum, so perhaps posting a question directly on the subject of painting a warbird would help.

The Testors paints are not fuel-proof but you can easily clear-coat them with fuel proof paint. That will seal the decals, panel lines, and anything else you can think of to put on!

kram's got the right idea. The house latex I'm using isn't 100% fuel proof, so I'm going to put Nelson hobbies' clear on top to seal everything.
