KMP Hurricane 72"

KMP Hurricane 72"
I've acquired a used 72" wing span KMP Hurricane. I'm planning on installing an RCGF 20cc (actually 23cc but they call it a 20cc) rear carb engine. I already have the J-Tech wrap around pitts exhaust. Not having the manual, I need info re control throws, recommended expo, c.g., and positioning and angle of landing gear. I fly off grass so I assume landing gear needs to be raked forward so the axle is under the leading edge of the wing. Using Spring Air retracts and 3/8" robart struts and 4" wheels. I've read what threads I could find about this plane and it seems most are having to add a pound or more of weight to the nose to get it to balance, so the weight of the gas engine should not be a problem.

The instructions recommend the following:
Control surface travel - Aileron: 15 mm up & down, Elevator: 20 mm up & down, Rudder: 20 mm right & left, Flaps: 30 mm down
CG: 108 mm
I found these settings to be pretty accurate on my plane. I am using about 20% expo on the ailerons and 25% on the elevator. I have a Saito 1.50 on the plane and still needed to add about a pound of lead. I am using Robart air up & down retracts with Robostruts. I did rake the gear forward to help with the nose over issue. I have been trying to locate a replacement canopy as mine was damaged in a nose over.
I hope info helps. I have the instruction manual if you need more info.

For what it's worth... after a few flights and tweaks, my Hurricane is now balanced at 105 mm (vice the recommended 108 mm). The first flight was balanced at 109 mm and the plane flew as if it was tail heavy. It was a challenge getting the plane back on the ground in one piece. At 105 mm it is a very stable flyer. What a difference a few millimeters can make!

Old Navy Flier,
Thanks, that is just the information I needed. I have a spare canopy for a VQ Hurricane. The plane is smaller but the canopy is too large for correct scale so it might work on the KMP. I'll see if I can find it and compare with the KMP and will let you know if it will work.

Thanks for the help. Here are a couple of pictures of the plane. I'll be replacing the tail wheel and the OS 120 FS with the gasser. Any tips on flying this thing. I have several years warbird experience including a TF P-40, VQ Hurricane, and H9 Hellcat (with a gasser).

RE: KMP Hurricane 72
Your KMP Hurricane should fly pretty similar to the T/F P-40. It has much heavier wing loading than the H9 Hellcat, so don't expect it to float in on landing. With the flaps extended and a small amout of throttle, the plane slows nicely. I have 20% UP elevator mixed with flaps. I recommend you start with no flap/elevator mixing until you have confirmed how your plane responds to flap deployment. I have the KMP Hurricane, Spitfire, and smaller model P-47. The Hurricane is not as nimble as my other warbirds, but it is a nice steady flyer that will do all scale aerobatics without problem, and makes me look good (which is no small feat). By the way, I checked my notes and found that I had to add 17 oz of lead to get her balanced.
Here's a photo of my model. Thanks for checking out the VQ Hurricane canopy. I look forward to hearing if it will fit the KMP model.

Old Navy Flier,
I found my VQ (60 size) canopy and it looks like it will work on the 72" KMP. Thomas at VQ Warbirds might have them, if not and/or you want my used one, you can have it for postage. About $4.50. E-mail and let me know.
