Someone who has the gear door hardware in hand - Could you please take some measurements? I've got some brass rectangle tube in hand and would like to make them as similar as the ESM pieces as possible. If you have a picture of the hardware that will help as well. Thanks!

Builttocrash - We can get together some time. Do you fly with the guys at Tom Sawyer?

I know I'm spoiled by other ARFs but I can't for the life of me figure out why the holes for the locator dowels are not pre-drilled by ESM. You have two at the front of the wing, two between the wing halves and two on each side of the tail plane. I have a pretty well equipped shop and it's still a pain in the A** to get it right. I have to believe this could be done at the factory much more accurately than us modelers can manage with hand held drills and plywood jigs. Not to mention a screw-up in one of these areas can have a LARGE effect on the flight performance. If I was going to build 50 of these at a time it would be worth the effort to make a nice jig and drill these during fabrication to insure that customers end up with a plane flying like it was designed.

Hyperion does it. Hangar 9 does it. Great Planes does it. Eflite does it. It can't be THAT hard.

And while you're at it drill the holes in the elevator halves for the joiner rod as well. Yet another area where I can cause myself problems.

It's times like these that make me think building from kits ain't so bad. At least then I can easily remake the parts I mess up.

OK... Rant over. Back to assembly.

I sure do fly down at Tom Sawyer. Have you flown there before?

I'm starting to get really disappointed in this kit for the lack of customer service from these companies. How many times do I need to contact these companies for these parts. Its just plain ridiculous. It really sounds like they purposely left out part of the door kit so that people would have to buy these ESM retracts, but whats even more ridiculous is the companies pushing Sierra gear and not letting us know that by purchasing their gearitsgoing to require EXTRA purchases fromESM. I think us guinea pigs of this whole setup should be provided these necessary parts to complete this plane.

ALSO CARLOS!!!!!!!! Am Ito believe that the Sierra gear w/ doors sits flush when closed? Mine doesn't even come CLOSE. Can you provide some pics of the gear retracted?

I flew there one year during the warbird event. Doug Blakeman from that club knows me. I used to own Speeders Hobby Center in Lexington.

Back to the T-28... I'm pretty much done with the wing. I have an issue with the Sierra gear in the T-28. If you install the wheel liners then the gear cannot retract enough to lock in the up position. My options are to depend on air pressure to hold the gear up, lose the liners or cut out the bottom of them. I'm undecided which way to go at this time. I used #2 button heads to mount the liners so removing them is not much of an issue. If you are glueing them in place make sure everything works to your satisfaction before you mix the epoxy.

I'm working on the horizontal stab / elevator now. I used some Sullivan pushrod exits to make the holes for the rudder cable look nice. They worked great.

I put it all together last night for a little bit. It is a nice looking plane. I hope it will handle a couple extra pounds. I'm guessing mine will end up in the 20-22lb range.

Since I have not started on mine, I cannot speak from experience on the T-28. However, I have encountered that very issue on other ARFs I have built. I determined the amount of clearance needed to lock the gear (which generally is very minimal) and used plywood shim stock under the gear mounting flanges. Normally it has been no more than 1/16" or 3/32" shim to do the trick and does not really affect the gear doors, etc.

Hope this helps...

thanks man, well the plane is a big trainer jajajaja its very stable and it lands with 20mm of flaps sweet, it comes straight to the runway i just had to pull a little amount of elevator to flare it and then let it run till it stop. i didn t use the gear yet because while we were doing final tests of it, it didn t locked up due to the gear doors so we decided not to mess it up.

Yes, can you provide pictures of the gear doors closed. I'm curious if they will even sit flush with the bottom of the wing. Thanks.

Thanks Carlos. Any reason why those doors don't sit flush with the wing? Is the wheel too wide? Or the wing to thin? Those doors should be smooth, shouldn't they?

Carlos,

You can't put the Wheel Well liner in the plane and expect the doors
to set flush unless you cut the center of the liner out to let the Oleo
Strut go all the way up to the Wing Skin.

I know that the Stock ESM Retrcats would have worked the same way.
We are using the same width tires and strut dia., so I know you are going
to have to relieve the center of the plastic liner.

If you look at the wood rib in the center of the Wheel Well, you can see it has
been laser cut out to clear the strut.

Just cut a slot in the center of the plastic liner and everything will fit.
This should also let the retracts lock in the retracted position. (If they are not already.

The Instructions did not show this, but they are very poor anyways.

Regards,

Darrell

I'm hoping someone who has the ESM gear door hardware can measure the length of the arm that goes from the upper portion of the strut to the upper gear door? My first try didn't work out and I really don't need more extra arms that don't fit.

I'm getting close. If the weather cooperates and the rest of my equipment arrives I should be ready to maiden within a couple weeks.
