Thanks, that is what I thought. 2 round holes are not enough.
I run the DLE55 and Jtec Top Flite P-40 Pitts exhaust and I would re-think how much cowl needs to be cut; for mine I cut the Exhaust Tubes about 1/8 Inch past flush with the Cowl and cut 2 holes in the Cowl for each about 1" to 1-1/2" Diameter, plenty of others have done the same, in fact someone I know, I would not do, but; had cut the exhaust tubes even shorter yet and the exhaust vents out through the large Rear/bottom Cowl Flap opening, the consensus is that there is plenty of opening through the Bottom/Rear open Cowl Flaps to vent out the Engine Heat, you can start with this for now and if there is a problem you can always open the cowl up more later, why cut the cowl needlessly; my 2 cents worth!

I might add, that when you cut the tubes to just barely past Flush, you can get the Cowl on and Off without any problems, if you leave the Tubes the length that they come from Jtec, you would have to open the cowl up like the pictures shown in Post#1249, to get the cowl on or off.

See posts 1126 & 1127 for more info on this set-up and Pictures.

I got one of these ARFs in the makeing.

Im trying to get parts for this and my TopFlite Gaint P47

Dose anyone know if I could use Robart 148 rotateing retracts vs the Robart 150.

From what i can tell is the the 150 size folds foward 10 more degress foward than the 148.

How is the landing / nose overs with this bird?

Couldn't give an answer on the retracts, but using what the factory called for, and balanced 1/8th inch forward of the rear-most recommended point, mine flies great on low-rate settings, does not want to nose over, and lands very slow with 2&3/4" of flap throw. Also, have a smidgen of down elevator mixed with the flaps.

Am going to build another this winter with a G-62 and American markings.

You can get a G62 in there? Any pics how many holes you have to make?

Mike,

Go to post 981, on page 40. It requires an intake manifold for the G-62 from a place called teamaeroscale.com. I plan on using a 20x15 APC racing prop and chasing down some P-51's next Spring....

You can't use the 148 robarts . The strut is to short,it won't allow the wheel to fit the well. You may be able to order new struts only and use the 148 base, for less cost than new 150 units.

Thanks, I have already cut 1/2 " off the pipes and cut 1" holes in the cowl. It seems that dumping the exhaust directly on the cowl would burn the paint off. I will probably elongate the holes and allow the pipes to stick out.

hi guys, has anyone ever ripped off the monokote, put a layer of glass on it and painted the P40? I would love to have an olive drab-grey scheme (particularly the Tarheel).

I have put 12 flights on mine as this point. Switched to a 20x10x3 prop, and hope to try a 20x12x3 soon. Get the flap throw to 45 degrees and keep a lot of power on while doing the final. Use power to control your rate of descent. No nose overs with it balanced at 1/8th inch ahead of the rear-most recommended point. Also, all the flights are at low rates on aileron and elevator. I also have elevator (up) mixed with the ruddewr movement. About 20 percent mix for right rudder, and 40 percent on left rudder. These settings for mix are on an Airtronics radio, and don't represent a mix of full throw values. More like 1/16th inch on one, and 1/8 inch on the other.
Finally, it needs no elevator to flap mix at all.

I like this plane! It flies well in wind, too.

Finally got to maiden mine today. DA-50 with 22x8 prop seemed to fly well, all the power you need.

Completed my P40 and I plan first flight soon. It balanced at 5.5 as specified by placing the life batt in the fuse just behind the wing. I'm
using DLE 55 W/ J-tec pitts style muff.

Ok guys about to build mine with a DLE 55, is the j-tec in vowel muffler the only one that will fit completely inside w/o having to cut the side? I don't like to cut any if the shark mouth on any of my 40's.

I don't know about other Mufflers but the Jtec Pitts Muffler fits completely inside the Cowel, no cutting of the cowle is required, except for the 2 Exhaust tubes that stick out the bottom.

Predman , Be sure that you order muffler that is designed for TFP40/DLE55. It has longer exhaust tubed.

How do you guys keep that J-tech muffler on. My vibrated to pieces (serious 3 pieces). Just sold the DLE55 so I could by a DLE 55 rear exhaust.

I had the same problem with J-tec on my p47, but I had already bought one for my P40.There are few muffler choices unless you really cut the cowl.

I flew mine for the first time yesterday. What a great flyer!!! Two clicks of up elev. and one click of right aileron and it flew straight and level with no bad habits . Lands like a trainer.

Well, I completed my second flight and my muffler was loose. I have had nothing but trouble with J-tec mufflers. I tried every suggestion possible on MY TF P47 and finally gave up and installed the stock muffler. The P40 has a narrow cowl which requires a pitts-style muff. I have tried blue locitite and red, with and without gasket and with high heat silicone ( on the P47). Nothing solved the problem. If anyone has any other suggestions please fire away.

Swordsn,

A simple fix: Drill a small hole in the side of the socket head bolts you will use to attach your muffler. Attach the muffler with silicone gasket material and red loctite on the bolts. Last step, run a wire throught the holes of the bolts and then twist together. This is a simple procedure that has been used for a LONG time for situations just like this. I use copper wire.
Drilling the holes in the bolts is a little tricky, but be patient and use a drill press.
