Mike,

I have both ARF's waiting for assembly, just as you do. It will be my second P-40 as I was amazed how well the big P-40 flew. The first had a DLE 55, the second will have a G-62 with a carb adaptor to move the carb to the rear. As to popularity, I can't tell why except the big P-40 always draws a crowd at the field! Use at least 45 degrees on the flaps and she'll walk to the runway.

Merry Christmas!

I've read all the threads on this plane. I have a question about motor choice. If there was an optimal engine, regardless of maker. what would the number one choice be? I see there are DLE 55's, 3W 60 and at least one DA 50 and a few G-62's. For me optimal would be a different sound other than the typical gas engine, 2 stroke sound.

Nelson thats great news! Maybe you have found the solution??

I've looked at the Kolm engines.. stunning engineering. I met Mr Kolm at Toledo last year, very nice guy. The Kolm 65 would be sweet if it weren't for the price

I have a Taurus 52 that needs a muffler lug on the cylinder repaired or a replacement cylinder (I can fix the engine myself but I can't weld well). I also have a G-45 that runs good .. but maybe the DLE55RA? would be the way to go.. its rear intake rear exhaust and not terribly expensive.

Hey guys whhat do you think of the stock muffler on the cowl?

I have/had a Keleo muffler on my TopFlite Gaint P51 that every one loved, all I ever herd of was thats soo cool and it was, even thow it cost me some RPM on the DLE55.

But I lost this bird due to my 4cell nicad in my DX8 loseing a cell while at a war bird show. Distroyed the plane as I was doing a fast low fly by when it happen.

The one for the P51 was only $300 vs the $125 for the JTec it seem worth the money, but the Keleo for the P40 is $450! vs the $125 for the Jtec muffler thats a huge diff,

Pluse the factory one on the P51 looked like crap, how dose the TopFlight stacks look in person on your kit?

I also see JTec sells a cast glue on muff for $100 that looks nice,

I can get that and the muffler for $225 wich is 1/2 of the Keleo.

What you guys think?

Pics?

Also were are you hiding your swiches.

Thanks Mike

Thats a lot of $ for a muffler for an ARF I could see maybe putting one in a Bates or Yellow P-40 but an ARF? Where's the payoff? cool looking yes.. cool sounding. maybe.

Often you can rotate the mounting position to hide the muffler. My TF P-47 has the cylinder at the 7 o'clock position and the factory muffler is completely within the cowl. You might try it for the P-40 as it has a lot of room inside that cowl.

The switches and the air valve on my P-40 are on the bottom of the fuse just behind the trailing edge of the wing. I put the fuel filler valve just inside the cowl on the plywood plate near the cowl flap. Reach in, unscrew it and pull the fuel line out to fill.

Its a great looking muffler.. but for $450 its more than the engine! lol..

FYI. I did some reading on the DLE55RA. According to what I've read here on RCU..there's a problem with some of the mufflers. They seem to fall apart in use. Not a good trait. Pluse the bolt pattern is not the same as on the side mount muffler .. so your choics for a different muffler is limited.

Its only sum of the DLE55RA,

I got mine from Troybuilt as Inew if there was a issue I would be ok, and I have overr 40 flights with no issues, now Im usieng in a ESMCorsair with scale 3 blade prop and Not ripping it like some of the 3D guys are but its a great motor and got just a little over the old DLE55.

I always put the red gasket maker on both sides of the gasket and put some on the threds of the muffler bolts.

Good Luck

No, but if I was going to I would just get longer screws, and put a small plate that when from one bolt whole to the other to give the bolts more of a hold on it.

Im going to start building this bird this weekend, what would you say are the top 4-5 things anyone building this bird need to look out for?

ThanksMike

You can,t put a plate behind both bolts on the JTEC muffler. It's curved like the one in Post 960. You can use the safety wire shown in post 960. This has solved my problem so far (8 flights)

Well guys I have been working on this plane for 2 nights and I will say its a lot better ARF than the Gaint P51

my issues so far are

I had to put a little peace of ply on the retract plate before glueing the formers in.

My left elevator was 2 mm lower in the rear than the right side

And my flaps are both a little warped ( tight towards the center and 3-4mm towards the outside)

So what strength issues should one building this kit need to address?
I was supprized there was aluminum plate in the wings for the retracts. But I still added some grin angle stock.

I did add 1/8 plates to the top of the LG mounts for clearance and I had a slight warp in one flap. This didn't affect flight at at all. I did add 30 minute epoxy to all joints around the motor box. Mine did not have the alum. plate That must be new.
