12th Scale Martin Mariner Build
Hello Mariner fans I've started this model in the winter of 2007 from Keith sparks plans.I've had major mod"s to do to make this bird a true 1/12th scale flying replica, from lengthening the wing from 100" to118" using a N A C A 2812 wing cord, adding flaps ,trim tabs and modifing the nacells to get the correct shape at the rear of them. The bow and the bow turret was very carefuly thought out ,being highly visibal location and having alot of glass area. Three pair of 12th scale 50. cals had to be fabricated for the tail top and bow. The bomb sight doors under the bow turret are usually never put on the models I've seen. The windows are cut from1/8th plexi glass. This PBM has JATO located at the rear waist doors like on the real one. Still need to cut my wing s and make new engine cowls.
For those of you who have never had the pleasure of working with foam construction I don't recomend this model as a first endever with foam, allthough foam can be forgiving this bird does'nt have one straight line in it !

Norm,
I'll be following this thread with interest, as I too have the plans for this ship, and have started putting together my documentation for it. Would you consider offering a set of scale parts from your molds? I would also appreciate you detailing the mods you have made, for us less talented but equally scale minded builders! Your ship looks great, and I look forward to the build progress. I hope to start on mine someday soon.
Thanks,
Bryan

Glad he's getting some hits on here...A lot of the time his work goes unnoticed. If any of you need pilot busts for your planes this is the guy to talk to. He even made Sgt. Schultz and Col. Klink from Hogans Hero's for a Stuka one time, it was great.

Hey there Warbirdmustang, the designer of this plane "Keith Sparks ",at [email protected] sells the plastic cockpit and turrets and engine cowls in a kit for around 45$. After my research I decided to only use the cockpit conopy and the top turret. The bow turret was not a total sphere so I decided to recreate it.The only thing I can offer in the way of a mold would be the engine cowl. Sparkys cowls are for the PBM3 and are made of plastic and might last a season or two .I'm making plugs with in a week or so for the PBM5 which are slightly longer and more tapered in the front, they will be made out of fiberglass. I can also send you the NACA templet for the wing, and I could be talked into making some 50.cals.
Thanks,
NJ

CPT,
Thanks for the reply! I can probably do the 50's, but I would most likely be interested in the cowls and airfoils. Keep me posted! I went to my first floatfly last year, and I'm hooked. I'm probably going to build myself a Northstar, just to play on the water with, but I've been drooling over these plans. I have a FW 190 D-9 1/6 scale IMP kit I'm working on right now, as well as refurbing a 1/4 scale Stearman that I traded for built from Dennis Bryant plans, but this may be my next project. I love this ship, and the videos I've seen of her flying are great! Excellent work on yours!
Thanks,
Bryan

Good day Spud , here in the high desert elevation is around 4,800 ft so we have to over size our engines. That being said, Sparky who flys at almost sea level recomends two 52 four strokes, and his bird weighs 16 lbs. Alot of guys are trying RCV 60s or 90s the problem with the 90 is you have to swing at least a 16 to17 inch three bladed prop which is too large and be right on the fusalage. A 14inch three blade is as close to scale as I can be. I probably going to end up using two OS 91 surpass .I have also entertained the idea of 17 gas engines but I need more research on them.

OK I finally got you guys some new pic's. My good friend Old bird was having a little trouble with the actual cutting pictures that were done with a single negative templet . So heres the results, enjoy.

There's aproximatly 35,000 double rowed hand placed rivets just on the fusalage alone. 5 to 6 hours a day for three months. It seemed like a good idea when I started , Yeah what was I thinking.
