That's great. Will they be for 2 or 3 bladed props?

Could someone tell what the main strut length is please? I'm thinking of getting one but already have some spare retracts and struts. Just want to see if they are the right size.

Thanks

Hi Jeremy,
The strut length is 8 in. from pivot point to axel. Hope this helps.
Thanks,

If anyone mounts up an OS 55GT to their Spit please post pics so we can get an idea of how much hangs out in comparison to a DLE-55. Cheers,
Dave

Will do, I have the motor on the way to me. I'm wondering about the same thing myself, but from some basic measurements, i already know thre will be some lower firewall cutting out to be done. If i measured correctly, roughly a half an inch vertical cooling fin should protrude past the bottom of the cowl line which would be a good thing. The gt55 head will also sit a lil more aft than the DLE55 would as it is these two motors i was trying to decide between. I just hope i can avoid adding a pound of lead to the front. the DA50 slimline pitts seems to be the least obtrusive as far as cutting out of cowling is concerned. Problem is I hear the da 50 slimline pitts muffler cuts a few hundred rpms on even a DA50, so how it works with a the GT55 is another thing im questioning. The Bisson Pitts is another alternative, thing is I believe this muffler will require cutting of the cowling near the exhaust port of the GT55 once mounted in the Spit.

The best motor to use on this is a 3w55i. It should fit entirely in the cowl with a 1" extension, except for the spark plug boot. I have installed the 3w50i on a smaller Taylor spitty, would be much easier on this bigger model.

Ordered one for my Spitfire today. Darn nice aftermarket detail kit, gets my plastic scale modeling juices flowing. This is just too nice a model to have a head & shoulders stuck on a flat deck for a cockpit.

The Weapon of Choice! O.S. GT55..... Gettin ready here! Had to open her up so I can get the back plate on the drill press. I needed to get the mounting ears drilled out to accomodate the 1/4-20 bolts i will be using for the mounts, The original holes were just a tad small for my comfort, it was something metric I dunno. But the inside of this motor is something else, it looked more like peering into one of the race motors being assembled in a friends race engine shop. Check out that rod and crank counterweight. Had to snap a few and share it. Meanwhile, the Spitfire awaits its japanese made mini merlin, lol

i would not open the holes in the backplate, you will be weaking the aluminium legs, you add bolt strength at the expense of mount strength, the trade off, and the possible engine damage is not worth it, even 4mm bolts(bet they are 5mm)will hold the engine on, i would not worry

I already have opened it up and the amount of material removed is minimal at most. My LHS doesn't supply metric RTL fasteners if even such are made. Using the 1/4" inch bolt brings it up to snuff with other 50CC mounts as well. In my opinion the dog ear mounts were drilled just too small since this motor will be on 1.25" inches of standoff to accomodate the custom JTEC Pitts I will be running, that in turn will limit how much firewall I would need to "Gouge". The added weight of thicker bolts will only help the tail heavy issue that I already know this model has.

Watching with keen interest. Can you post a pic of the custom Jtec muffler please. I have the standard Jtech muffler on my DLE-55 in my Yak and would like to see whats different between the two. Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Ty

Can you please post some more pictures about the spinner. How its made from the inside. How far up the spinner the hole is and how thick the wall is.
Im going to have me made Sea Fury (diameter x height) 150mm X 140mm spinner. CNC'd ofcourse.

Hi there Tisoy909, how well will the O.S fit in the cowl as far as the head goes, looks like it has a longer forward crank than the DLE, is it any taller than the DLE, would love some feedback. Ihave a spitty on the way as well down here in New Zealand.

Hi Andrew, I am still waiting for the arrival of my jtec muffler to get a final view as to how everything will work out. As far as distance and measurement goes. In comparison to the DLE50 I cant be certain till my muffler comes in since I dont have a DLE motor. From measurements in the manuals for both motors however, I did recall the gt55 to be roughly a half of an inch or so taller than the DLE when measuring crankshaft center to top of head height, This distance, i am hopeful, isnt going to be too much of a concern since the GT55's head sits a little further aft than the DLE55, and so will sit more enclosed within the cowling. Regardless, sufficient openings will need to be cut to provide adequate cooling anyway. Although the GT55 head is taller, the exhaust port of the GT sits at pretty much equal distance from the crank as does the exhaust port of the DLE55. I ordered a custom jtec muffler which is originally designed for DA50 engines mounted into Top-flite giant scale mustangs. I'm hopeful this will be the key to the entire install, and thus minimizing how much firewall and cowl will need to chopped.

OK guys, go to TBM and click on the 89" Spittey and click the video tab. you can clearly see how far out the DL50 sticks out of the cowl especially at the end of the video when the plan lands and rolls up to the camera. it looks cool and flies great here is the link

Hi guys, here's a link to the build thread of the Spitfire that you saw flying at the TBM site. They just pinched it from the YT international site that the build thread is on. There's 3 spittys on the go on this forum. Theres some good cooling ideas there.
Read and enjoy. http://www.ytinternational.co.uk/for...php?f=17&t=263

Hey, here's a crazy idea!, how about using one of those water cooled MVVS 50's and make use of those awsome under wing radiators. Now that would be going to extremes.

Interesting, that would be alot of plumbing, does the motor need a water pump, and what about the radiators, they included too?
