Not sure about warbirds anymore

RE: Not sure about warbirds anymore
I lost a Hanger 9 Hellcat when the wing broke at the wheel well. 20cc gas engine and CJ retracts. I had opened up part of the spar to install the Century Jet retracts and didn't re-enforce the area. However, the landing gear, engine, most servos and radio survived. The gear wont fit anything else. So I got another one and heavily re-enforced the wheel well area. It has been a great plane and has over 70 flights on it. I think I will put flaps on it this winter.

Don't get discoreged, I allways start a new project and before you know it
you are pumped up again. This can be a brutal hobby but flying is so much
fun, crashes are just apart of it. My two cents. Ian

RE: Not sure about warbirds anymore
If we are honest, most all of us, in the hobby for a length of time, have had this experience. It has happened to me several times over the last 42years in RC.
For me, I change direction when I loose a well loved airplane. If it is a cherished war bird, I find myself going in the aerobatic direction for awhile, or maybe all out speed. Eventually, I'll get the bug again and go back to the type I lost, but with renewed enthusiasm. I usually wind up building something better than I lost.
One day, about 15 years ago, I crashed a 1/3 scale Lazer 200, an Extra 260 with a Saito T182 in it, and a Cap 232. All with in about 45 minutes. All dumb thumbs. I didn't fly for about 3 months, then I went back to work building and have never had another day like that since.
Unfortunately, crashes are a very real part of the hobby. It is a rare thing for me to get through a season without one. Last year I only had two. One was due to radio lock-up, and the other was a foamie. Not bad.
My advise is, take a break from that P-51 and have some fun. When you go back to it, it will be a fresh start.

Always good to have some backup warbird and it doesnt have to cost so much either. I find it hard to having only one warbird crash on you. Maintenance is a crucial part of keeping your model from crashing, however if you keep crashing with a dumb thumb, then maybe you need more stick time on sport planes before warbirds.

Well, the first mistake you made was "lots of scale options".
Fly the darn thing before you add all this stuff and if that isn't possible then have two of the same plane. One done-up without any frills and the other with all your scale options.
That is how you stay in the warbirds.
