Default Jerry Bates 1/5.5 Seafury Build

I am using The Jerry Bates Plans, Bob Holman Lazer cut wood, Siera Retracts, and Vicrc SeaFury Fuse. This is my First stick wing build so all help will be apprieciated, i would like to have this plane fully built and painted by the end of September, so i will have to stay focused on this project. This morning i decided to mock up the center section, allready questions about the wing dowels, seems like alot of open space for the dowels to be drilled into. Ian

Hi there Bluffman!

This looks cool. I sure will be watching this build. Ill be building it next month. I allready ordered plan, cowl and canopy. End of month im ordering cuted parts aswell. Ill do a build up fuse though.
I have a question about the wings though. Are the wings made like 115" one where you connect the outer wings to the center by tube or one piece?

Hi it is going to be a one piece wing, you build center panel and then outer panels, and join, sounds strait forward. post your build. Ian

I am stuck, trying to figure out if i should install rib 6, as part of center panel or rib 6 should be part of outer panel. Ian

You need ribs up to where it starts to bend for dihedral and when you sheet the center section sheet only the inner rib as you will sheet the outer rib when sheeting the outer panels, I know its hard to do that but you can trim the inner panel sheets after its been glued down.

I looked at the plans the center section is only up to rib 5 and 5a

A word of warning from my experience in building the quarter scale one, check the depth of the u/c bearers to make sure the doors are at the correct depth!

On the quarter scale plan the units sit 22mm too deep into the wing. Also on the full size the ailerons are hinged at the TOP.

I did not have any problems with mine. However I had the retracts in hand when I installed the retract rails I made sure the struts sit properly inside the wheel well before doing the final sheeting to the bottom of the wing. Hinging is more on personal preference, you don't always have to follow what is on the plans. Even if it was hinged per plan you cant tell it was hinged on the top, middle or bottom.

Looks good Ian!

I maiden my Seafury today! What a great flying warbird, you will like flying this plane more than your Zero. In the air it reminds me of my FW190D9 as it tracked very straight but take-offs and landings even easier than a P47.

The outer ribs is shorter. You need to cut the sheeting just ahead of the main spar so the sheeting will drop to the shorter rib.

This is the steps I took on building the wing.

1-Build center section, sheet the top
2-Build the outer outer panels by propping the center section and sheet the top
3-Mount the retract rails and set the retracts 'UC' in as it should
4-sheet the bottom center section making sure its sits flat on the building board, prevent any twist using shims or a make a reverse airfoil to hold the wing down. I temporarily zap them on so the wing wont move during sheeting.
5-On the outer panels route a paper tube to run servo wires. I mounted all my servos directly behind the flaps and ailerons.
6-Sheet bottom outer panels. Take your time on this as you can put the wrong twist on the wing. Jig the center section flat and check using a Robart incident meter, should be set to 0 degree. Make yourself some 1/8 ply rib cradle (reverse airfoil profile) near the tip. I zapped these on the top wing to prevent them from moving and zapped them to the table. Check incidence on the tips should be a washout of 1-2 degrees. Once you have the wing locked down on the table you can sheet the bottom outer panels.

I don't sheet the entire panel at once, I sheet half of the main spar to the trailing edge and when dried I sheet from spar to the leading edge. Also in the previous post pic, I make my sheeting parallel to the wings edges, using angle cuts. Sheeting will form easier on the wing and be easier to trim and sand. If you pre-sand your sheeting, you wont need to sand the wing much.

As far as servos go, I glassed my wing, primer and sand smooth. Then I cut the pockets for the servo hatches and installed my servos just behind the control surfaces, making sure the pockets are between ribs. Some will prep the servo and its control rods before sheeting the bottom, which is perfectly fine, we all have our ways of doing things.

Vic

This is all good, so as you go along I am updating my build thread so it can be of good reference for others. Its good to have questions and will make your first built up wing go smoothly. I used to only build from foam core wings... these days I like built up wings better than using cores.

Flipped the panel over and test fit the landing gear. looks like alot of cutting to the rib. Got to figure out the correct angle on the landing gear. Ian

I made the wing tip today, my first attemp failed, i glued all 5 pieces of 1/4 balsa together, made a template glued it to it, and then used my scroll saw to cut it out, it did not look
good. The one on top in the first picture is the bad one, i then decided to make another template but i only put it on one piece of 1/4 balsa, i used my hamer and a blade and hammerd it through the lines, then i did 4 more, clamped them together, here are the pictures.

Use ply on rib 8A. If your hinging as per plan it will need to be strong to hold the hinge.

Today i built the other side of the wing, here are a few pictures with my technique, plus bonus bench flying a little premature but it allways helps for insperation.
