Yes, I used a BH models cowling from their P-40C. I had it left over from my P-36 conversion. It was too big towards the rear, so I cut down the center of the cowl and pulled together to draw up the rear. Still plenty of cooling air. Had a day of good weather and flew five times today trying to get airplane sorted out and trimmed etc. Engine ran great. Was turning 8,200 rpm . Plenty of power, but not overpowered.

Wow...Great Pics Joe...thanks for posting these so fast. I really like the wingman pic with the huri. Pretty sure that's Dave's P40 (no radio mast). The panning shot is probably the coolest IMHO and definitely my P40. It was a pretty dreary afternoon but we did dodge the rain and managed 3 warbird flights tonight. Challenging to fly at times due to poor visibility as well as for shooting some footage and pics (thanks again Joe!). I will cut together some vid from the last few weeks of flying including some footage Joe shot of my P40 and Tim's 9H( P40), flying in late afternoon light (evening really) and into a full rising moon...pretty cool!
So far my setup is running well and the YS is getting more reliable as well as more powerful, too. With the MA 16X8 3 blade it makes an intoxicating howl at WOT, especially tonight due to the colder air. It does not have quite the speed (it's still fast as hell) of the APC 15X10 2 blade nor the vertical but it does slow the plane well when throttling back and does accelerate well too. I rounded the tips and painted them yellow...it does look good when the sun hits the blades and throws a good sized prop arc for the scale of the model. Pic below shows unpainted Dave Brown 3 blade spinner, which is now painted red.

NO glitches regarding radio equipment. I'm using Futaba 2.4. TX is just a simple 6 channel, model T6EX. I have had this radio since they came out a few years ago and so far it has been bullet proof, flying everything from fun fly, combat, edf jets, some indoor and warbirds. No Binding / ubinding B.S., failsafe lockouts, charging or firmware issues.... NONE. That said I'm ready sometime soon to upgrade to a 10 or more Futaba TX as I need more options channels and customization. In the past I have also owned PCMS and regular FM...all Futaba and without any major issues. My exterior case on MY PCM 8UAP did, over time, deteriorate but it did have many many hours of flight and sim time. I had one model with over 800 hrs of flight time on that radio along with others with almost as much, so...I got my monies worth. Despite this issue the electronics ares still going strong after all these years.

Okay Guys;
One quick question on the cowling. When I put my plane in the holder, the bottom of my cowling like to cave in! Now it will pop back out when the plane has been remove from the holder. Have anyone else had or having with their cowling.??? Do I need to lay more glass in the bottom of the cowling?? Thanks for any info!!!

Yup, a few layers of fine cloth can be very strong. I did this to my lower section of my cowl and no cave ins even on one landing where the nosed over fairly hard. Look back through this thread. I posted pics of what I did.

All-right fellas. I've recovered a bit from this summer's destruction. I've been poking in this this thread on and off since I crashed my desert shark. I'm loving all the maiden reports and pictures- Very encouraging. Now that fall is approaching the itch is starting to return and I find myself thinking about how to start the rebuild. I don't really have the time this winter to completely re-kit another aircraft but I think I can definitely rebuild the fuse and maybe later get the parts for a new wing. My problem is that this was my first kit and it was great learning experience to figure out building but I have no idea where to start as far as rebuilding the extent of damage (total nose separated at canopy front/instrument panel) that I have here. I've poked around looking for general repair but I've only really found covered skeletal semi-monocoque repairs. Nothing yet for the P-40 specific or really a good general sheeted structure repair thread. Any suggestions that you might have seen in your travels? Anyone have experience with ordering cut parts direct from hobbico?

Will check those out. Seriously, has anyone tried mating kit with ARF on that grand of scale? How tough is that covering on the ARF to peel off for re-scheming? I love the look of the drab with The meatball stars in AO's post above.

Anything is possible if you want to dig into it bad enough. Are there ARF fuse only spares available from TF or the distributors? I don't know about that but I'm sure, eventually there will be. You could also try ebay or some other similar venue (swapshops too) for spares. If you have to rebuild, I have jigsaw puzzled back together many planes in the past, some just for the challenge of doing so. There is some sense of pride when completed and the thing takes back into the air looking like nothing ever happened but you are all the wiser about you're flying and with less fear of crashing as you have got the recent building experience in your back pocket. It is a great confidence builder on so many levels to undertake the rebuild in my opinion. I encourage you to look at your fuse and see what you can make of it. Post a few detailed pix here, maybe we can help you better by viewing what needs to be done.
I did once do a arf / kit mating on a trainer from two different models (eagle 2 wing, kit and hobbico arf trainer, fuse)...worked well, just make sure everything is square and level to each other. Also rebuilt the fuse saddle area and wing to my little OK models zero many times (actually rebuilt pretty much everything a few times over the years and it's 800 hrs of flight on her). Just make sure nothing goes on misaligned or overweight and you should be fine.
Monokte/Ultrakote/ etc is easy to take off...just use a heat gun to soften the adhesive and it will just pull right off. Direct the heat from the gun at the point of contact where the film meets the wood structure. There may be some pesky areas where the film will separate from the color and adhesive. Just sand this off or use acetone to get most of it off.

Thanks for sharing the links! Yes, this plane can be a bear on the ground (full scale is too!) but you can do a few thing to help its natural tendencies to nose over so easily. Try adding more throw in you elevator and use it when taxiing and for initial rollout. As you build speed and the tail comes up and the fuse gets parallel with the runway keep it there by adding the right amount of up elevator, Apply more elevator if the fuse begins to nose over. On your first vid I cannot see much elevator use even on the taxi out. Use all your up elevator to keep that tail planted when taxiing. Shorten the distance of your tail wheel (bend it back or use a smaller one) forcing a higher taxi attitude of the fuse and add larger more stiff main wheels (mine are 4" ground down a bit to fit the wells). Again, increasing this taxi attitude will go a long way in reducing nose overs. Oleos will smooth out taxiing and ground runs and landings too. You might consider this. Sorry for all this if you already know this stuff.

Jigsawed? Is that the strongest way tO reconstitute a fuse? Staggered repair pines/seams? Whats the story withthat drab p40 in the picyou posted earlier?

Yes, jigsaw it back together to get everything into alignment and proportion. Add new stringers, light ply or balsa sheet, epoxy and microbaloons to areas where it is critical or you are missing parts (you may have to make a few parts or scavenge a kit). If you really want use light veil glass cloth over the sheeting...It will be stronger than the original then. We did all of the above once to my friends Skyraider. No spares, blueprints or instructions were available as the model had been discontinued for some time so there was no choice but to reconstruct from the bits which survived the crash. The model turned out well and flew well. The front fuse was at least as strong as the original and weight gain was minimal. I have with good success in the past, used a heat gun to soften all the glue joints (epoxy, CA, and High temp Hot melt) to essentially de construct areas back to just parts. You could repair the parts or use them as templates. Just put the heat gun very close to the glue joint you are trying to separate and let it heat the area thoroughly. There will be smoke and noxious gasses released so do this outside. As the area gets hot notice you can pull the parts apart fairly easily. Use thin tools to pry if need be. Be careful, the parts and blast from the gun can be very hot! Pics below show proof that you can disassemble even large glue areas. This is the wing of my WM Zero I acquired from a club member which had the two wing halves misaligned at the center. The plane had been crashed as few times and needed some repair when I got it. Using this technique I was able to disassemble the entire center wing section and still reuse all the parts. The final was far better even from the factory!
Drab P40 is a heavily repaired and repainted Hanger 9 P40 my friend acquired from another club member who crashed it but did not think it was salvageable. The current owner took on the project and rebuilt it in hopes of giving it to another member who had one a long time ago but was also lost in a crash. He was part of our group but had kind of given up flying for a while following frustration of H9 p40 not being available on the market any more ( he really loved that plane!). This same member did get a TF P40 60 (His style is more of a sport, go fast tight turn type of flying the H9 loves) but just could not get comfortable with it so he stopped flying for this summer and is not sure he wants to trade the TF for the H9 or what so far. So, for the time being, Tim (pictured below holding my zero), the current owner, is just flying it. She flies well but is a bit rough around the edges up close. The outline looks good by itself but is no match for the more scale outline of the TF P40. You'll see more of it when I post some video coming soon.

Here are a few pictures of flight #2 of the P-40 Warhawk yesterday. This plane is a joy to fly. The owner of our club field fell in love with her. Then he told us he flew them back in WW II. We was shock!!![X(][X(]
