Default Gas 4 stroke engines, ~50cc

I am really curious why there isn't a plethora of choices for 50cc-100cc gas 4 stroke engines on the market. Only one I know of is the moki offering, and the smaller saito fg series. 4 strokes are immensely popular nitro engines, so why not gas? Is there a techical challange? Very curious...

No technical challenge that I know of... more of a marketing challenge. Most Mfgs. would rather not make a new engine due to the high cost of doing so. For example, the Saitos are conversions of their Nitro engines. Moki uses the 50cc power head as its the same on the Radials. Honda makes a 4 cycle 50cc engine as does another Mfg. I can't remember the name at the moment.

In addition to Honda, Ryobi, Briggs and Stratton, Shindawa, and Stihl make small four stroke gas engines. The Stihl 4-MIX uses oil mixed with the gas and eliminates the wet sump for the oil the others need. Reduces weight and solves the oil supply when inverted problem.

I am looking for a Stihl 4-Mix if anyone has one for sale or trade.

The German 4 stroke gas engines are very impressive, but so are the prices.

Sincerely,

Richard

More weight - less power.

More weight is almost never an issue with warbirds and depending on the application, more power is not an issue either. Not everyone is looking to see how fast they can go. I have my Pylon planes to fly fast. My scale aircraft are more for their style.

The Stihl 4 mix motor in my leaf blower will knock a horse on it's keester, & sounds good too, not that nasty ping/ding noise! I agree the larger scale planes are desperately missing a practical gas 4 stroke option.

yes i agree, there is a need for good four stroke's,and not engines that rev! low rev's and more scale prop speeds and quiet
engines like the sawo multi cylinders would be great

Ive said it before and will again. Ideally for me a 4 stroke gasser V twin design based on the Saito 2.20, same as they did with the 200ti i.e. a 4.40ti would be the go for most inline scale engined 1/5 scale warbirds..... I know keep dreaming But for me anyway that would be the solution to my preferred warbird powerplant. I hate the chainsaw sound and bits hanging out spoiling the scale outline so Iam out of luck so far....
